Age is the enemy of every rubber component on a quad, and fuel hose is where that aging carries the highest cost. A 2017 Sportsman X2 570 EPS running electronic fuel injection keeps its supply line pressurized by an in-tank pump the moment the key turns, which means there is no petcock to shut off and a weak spot in the hose becomes an active leak rather than a slow drip. Understanding why that hose degrades tells you when to replace it instead of gambling on another season.

The Chemistry Behind a Hardened Hose

Fuel line fails from two directions at once. Heat cycling from the ProStar 570 slowly bakes the plasticizers out of the rubber wall, and the hose loses its elasticity in the process. What was pliable becomes stiff and slightly glassy, and stiff hose does not tolerate the flexing that a utility chassis produces over ruts and rocks. Small fissures open up, usually where the line bends or where a clip holds it against the frame.

Meanwhile, ethanol-blended gasoline attacks the inner liner. E10 pulls in atmospheric moisture and gradually breaks down that inner surface, leaving it soft and prone to shedding particles downstream toward the injector. Long idle periods make this worse because the chemistry continues whether or not the engine ever fires. Riders in dry, arid regions get the additional penalty of accelerated exterior drying, so a hose in Nevada or eastern Oregon can age faster than the same hose in a humid climate.

What Failure Looks and Smells Like

Trust several senses here. The clearest early indicator is a persistent gasoline odor around the rear of the machine, sharpest during the first few minutes after shutdown while the line still holds pressure. Visually, look for damp streaks running down the hose, a puddle or wet film on the skid plate, and dust caked into a ring at a fitting where seeping fuel has dried. Run the hose through your fingers and feel for stiffness, chalkiness or a hard section that no longer springs back.

Performance symptoms count too. An engine that bogs under load, stumbles on abrupt throttle input, or feels lean and breathless at higher rpm may be starved by a collapsing or leaking line. On an injected machine, small high-pressure leaks often evaporate before they can drip, so the absence of a puddle proves nothing.

Tools, Parts and a Word About Gasoline

  • Gloves rated for solvent contact and safety glasses
  • A catch pan and a sealed, fuel-approved container
  • Injection-rated hose in the original inside diameter, cut from a length rather than pieced together
  • New clamps of the correct type plus a quick-connect release tool if the tank fitting uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, standing in for the fuel valve this platform does not have
  • Sockets, a panel trim tool, a razor knife and rags

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects near the floor, so work outdoors or with the shop door fully open rather than relying on a high window. Shut down any heater, keep chargers and grinders out of the space, and have a rag on hand for every fitting you open.

Getting Access and Freeing the Old Line

The X2 body layout adds a step. Its two-up chassis places the convertible rear seat and cargo deck over the tank area, so both that assembly and the rider seat come off before the fittings are visible. Since this is an all-wheel-drive machine, the hose also routes past front differential hardware and extra frame structure, giving it a slightly longer run with more clearance points to navigate than a two-wheel-drive quad has.

Depressurize first. Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, run the engine until it dies, key off, then disconnect the battery negative. Slide your pan under the work area and drape a rag over the joint you are about to open. Back worm-gear or spring clamps off and slide them well clear of the fitting. For a quick-connect, squeeze the tabs squarely and pull straight, never sideways, because aged collars split under prying. Twist a varnish-bonded hose gently to break it loose, or slit it with a razor and peel it off if it refuses to move. Photograph every clip location before the old piece is fully out.

Making the New Connection

Match the new hose to the old one in length, not just diameter. Excess line rubs the frame or crowds the steering once everything is buttoned up. Push each end onto its barb until it fully bottoms out, working the hose on dry. Do not apply grease, oil or silicone spray to help it along; any lubricant on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to escape past the clamp. Warm water is the correct softener for stubborn hose.

Seat fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly. If the tank end is a self-locking quick-connect, press it in until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm the latch engaged. That style of fitting is designed to hold on its own and adding a clamp only distorts it. Finish by returning the hose to every factory clip so it sits away from exhaust heat and the front driveline.

Pressure Check, Then Ride

Put the fuse back, Reconnect the battery, and turn the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle primes the pump and loads the line, which is exactly what you want while the surfaces are still clean and dry enough to reveal a bead of fuel. Inspect both joints, wipe them with a light-colored rag, then start the engine and watch again through several minutes of idle. When nothing weeps, reinstall the panels, cargo deck and seats.

One last point specific to this injected 570: the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly instead of sitting inline where you can inspect it. New hose eliminates a leak, but it will not restore flow lost to a plugged filter. If the machine still feels fuel starved after a leak-free installation, that module is the next thing to investigate.
