Rubber does not last as long as the machine around it. On a 2017 Scrambler 850, the aluminum, steel, and plastic will outlive the fuel hose by decades, and the hose is the part that will leave you walking. Knowing exactly how it deteriorates — and why an injected machine raises the stakes — is the best reason to replace it before it forces the issue.
Hardening From the Outside In
Fuel hose relies on plasticizers to stay soft and elastic. Those compounds slowly migrate out of the rubber over years of service, and once enough are gone the wall becomes rigid and starts fracturing wherever it has to flex. On the Scrambler that means the sections curving over the tank outlet and the throttle body fitting go first.
The 850 twin contributes plenty of underhood heat, and a Scrambler used the way it was designed to be used flexes its chassis hard and often, working each barb continuously. Climate plays a part too: in dry regions, low humidity draws remaining moisture out of the hose wall and the hardening progresses noticeably faster than it does on an identical machine kept somewhere humid.
Breakdown From Within
The inner liner has a separate problem. Ethanol-blended pump gas attracts moisture into the fuel system and gradually attacks liner material, softening it while the exterior continues to stiffen. When fuel stands in the line for months without circulating, that process accelerates and evaporation leaves gum and varnish coating the inside of the passage.
On a fuel-injected engine this matters more than it would on a carbureted one. Injector orifices are small and unforgiving, so liner material shedding into the fuel stream is a genuine downstream risk rather than just a flow restriction. That is why age alone justifies replacement on a hose that still looks acceptable.
Symptoms That Should Prompt a Look
- Gasoline odor around the machine, strongest in the minutes right after you shut it down
- A wet spot or stain appearing on the skid plate or garage floor beneath the tank
- Visible crazing, a chalky finish, or a length that feels stiff and glassy when you pinch it
- Grime collecting in a ring at a fitting, which is fuel seeping and drying repeatedly
- Stumbling on hard acceleration, a lean sensation at high rpm, or the engine bogging while working
No Petcock Means Pressure First
This Scrambler is electronically fuel injected, and there is no manual fuel valve anywhere on it. A pump inside the tank supplies fuel under pressure, and that pressure remains in the lines well after shutdown. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stops running, then key off and disconnect the battery negative.
Assemble the rest of what you need before going further: hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, appropriate clamps, a quick-disconnect release tool if the coupler at the tank calls for one, line-clamping pliers to pinch off a low-pressure section since no valve exists, gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed fuel container, a socket set, rags, and a sharp blade. Take ventilation seriously as well — gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles into a layer on the floor, so work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open, extinguish pilot lights, and keep ignition sources away entirely.
Getting the Old Hose Out
Remove the seat and the side plastics to expose the tank fitting and the run toward the throttle body. Slide the drain pan into place and drape a rag over each joint before opening it, because residual fuel stays in the hose even after a correct pressure relief.
Back a screw or spring clamp well away from the joint before disturbing it. For a quick-connect coupler, compress the release tabs evenly and pull the fitting straight off its nipple — aged plastic collars crack if levered sideways. Break the varnish bond by rotating the hose on each barb rather than hauling on it, and if an end still will not surrender, slice the hose open lengthwise and peel it away. Record the routing as you go: this all-wheel-drive chassis puts front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers in the path, so the hose passes through clips a two-wheel-drive quad would not have.
Installation and Verification
Cut the new hose to the length of the old one. Extra length is a liability, sagging onto a frame edge or drifting toward hot exhaust and steering components. Push each end fully home until it seats against the fitting shoulder, and assemble everything dry — lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route past the seal and swells the rubber over time. Warm water softens a tight end without introducing any of that.
Position new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, firm but not crushing. If the tank end uses a self-locking quick-connect, press it together until the collar clicks and tug it to verify engagement; that design needs no clamp. Seat the hose back into all its original clips.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the circuit and lets you examine both joints while they are still dry. Wipe them clean, look and feel for any beading, then fire the engine and repeat the inspection at idle for a few minutes. One last note on this platform: the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly rather than being an inline part you can reach on the visible line, so if delivery problems persist with a fresh hose installed, that module is the next thing to investigate.
