How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2017 Kymco MXU 450i

A gasoline smell that spikes right after you shut the engine off is the classic early warning on an injected machine. The circuit is still holding pressure at that moment, so a hose with a weak spot pushes vapor out where a gravity-fed line would simply sit quiet. On the 2017 MXU 450i, that odor is worth chasing down immediately, because the fuel plumbing between the in-tank pump and the throttle body is pressurized rather than passive.

Symptoms That Deserve Immediate Attention

Start with your nose, then confirm with your hands and eyes. Squeeze along the whole hose: healthy rubber compresses and springs back, while a failing line feels rigid or keeps the crease you press into it. Check both fittings for a ring of fuel-stained dust, which is what slow weeping under pressure leaves behind after the fuel itself evaporates. Look for surface cracking and any chalky, dried-out texture along the length.

The engine contributes evidence as well. A hose restricted internally by swelling or varnish still supports a steady idle, since idle fuel demand is small, but it cannot keep up when the 443cc single is working. That shows up as bogging under load, a stumble on hard acceleration, or a lean condition at higher revs. Note that a pressure-side leak does not always produce a puddle, because escaping fuel often atomizes and evaporates before it reaches the ground.

Confirming You Are Working on an Injected System

This matters more than any other detail in the job. The 450i is fuel injected, which means there is no petcock beneath the tank to shut off flow, the pump sits inside the tank, and the line stays pressurized after shutdown until you deliberately bleed it. It also means the fuel filter is geneRally part of the in-tank pump module rather than an inline element you can see, so a fresh hose will not resolve a delivery problem that is actually a clogged filter.

Examine both ends of your line before ordering anything. Some injected machines use ordinary clamped hose ends and some use a self-locking quick-connect coupler that snaps onto a machined nipple and takes no clamp at all. The 450i is also a four-wheel-drive quad, so the hose threads past front differential hardware and extra frame structure that a two-wheel-drive machine does not carry. Access is a bit tighter as a result.

How Fuel Hose Deteriorates

Rubber hardens as the softening compounds inside it migrate out and evaporate. Heat from the engine accelerates that process, and once the wall has stiffened, the constant vibration of a single-cylinder engine and the flex of the chassis begin cracking the surface. Dry air makes it worse, drawing moisture out of the hose wall until it checks into a web of fine lines.

Meanwhile ethanol-blended fuel attacks the interior. It absorbs water vapor from the air, and the resulting mixture softens the inner liner so it swells and sloughs off fine material toward the injector. Fuel left standing through long periods of non-use compounds this with gum and varnish, which shrink the flow path and cement the hose to its fittings. On a pressurized circuit, a wall weakened this way is holding pressure instead of just carrying fuel, which is why replacement is not something to postpone.

Gathering Parts and Handling Fuel Safely

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves plus eye protection
  • An approved container for the fuel you capture
  • Hose rated for fuel-injection pressure, matched to the original inside diameter, not carburetor-grade hose
  • Correct clamps for your fitting style, and a release tool if you find a quick-connect coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, which stand in for the petcock this machine does not have
  • A socket set, screwdrivers, pliers, a razor knife, and a stack of rags

Treat the ventilation requirement liteRally. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it drops to the floor and spreads along it rather than rising and dispersing. A fan at ground level and a fully open garage door accomplish what an open window six feet up cannot. Better still, work outside. Extinguish standing pilot lights, keep the battery disconnected while lines are open, keep chargers and hot lamps well clear, and dry fuel-soaked rags outdoors.

Bleeding the System and Pulling the Line

Relieve pressure before anything else. Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stalls, switch the key off, and disconnect the battery negative terminal. That sequence takes most of the pressure out of the circuit and removes the risk of the pump running while a fitting is open. Then pull the seat and enough bodywork to see the tank and the full hose run toward the throttle body, photographing the routing and every clip as you go.

Position a drain pan and lay a rag over each fitting before opening it, because residual fuel remains even after depressurizing. Clamped ends need the clamp walked back along the hose first. Quick-connect couplers need the locking tabs depressed squarely and the fitting pulled straight off, never levered sideways, since aged plastic collars split under prying. Use the clamping pliers to isolate any low-pressure section that would otherwise drain.

Break the varnish bond by twisting the hose gently rather than pulling hard on the fitting. When a section will not release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off the barb. Watch how the line negotiates the front differential and crossmembers on this 4x4 chassis so you can reproduce the path exactly.

Installation and Pressure Testing

Cut the new hose to match the old length precisely. Excess sags into the front driveline or rubs a frame tube, and a short piece keeps tension on both fittings as the engine rocks. Slide each end on dry until it seats past the raised bead. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place here; anything slick on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a channel to creep out, and clamp torque will not seal it. Warm the hose end in hot water if it fights you.

Fit new clamps just behind each bead and tighten evenly. If a self-locking quick-connect is used at the tank, push it home until the collar clicks and then pull firmly to verify it has latched, leaving it clamp-free. Route the hose back through its factory clips, clear of exhaust heat, the front driveline, and moving suspension components.

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the circuit and lets you check both joints while they are dry and clean. Inspect by sight and by touch, then start the engine and go over both connections again with a fresh rag while it idles. Give it several minutes of leak-free running before the plastics go back on. If fuel delivery still feels soft afterward, the in-tank filter is the next suspect, since on this machine it is not serviceable from the visible line.
