There is no valve on the tank to close, the pump sits inside the tank rather than bolted to the frame, and the hose you are replacing carries fuel under pressure all the way to the throttle body.

Understanding This Machine's Fuel Path

Fuel leaves the in–tank pump module, travels through the supply hose along the frame, and arrives at the throttle body where the injector meters it. Nothing in that path relies on gravity, which is why there is no petcock and why line–clamping pliers become your shutoff device. Pressure also lingers after shutdown, so the hose remains charged until you deliberately bleed it. An injected machine complicates puddle spotting, because a pressure–side pinhole tends to mist and evaporate rather than drip. Smell is often the earliest reliable signal. Any lingering gasoline odor with no visible source justifies running a gloved hand down the entire hose and flexing it near each fitting.

What Ages the Rubber Out

The hose hardens long before it splits. Heat cycling from the 749cc V–twin steadily bakes plasticizers out of the rubber wall, and once those are gone the material loses its ability to flex. Vibration then does the damage, working fine fissures into a surface that can no longer absorb movement. The cracks almost always start at a bend just off a fitting, where flex is concentrated.

  • Line–clamping pliers, since no petcock exists to stop flow
  • A sealed fuel container and a shallow catch pan
  • Sockets, a small flat blade, a razor knife, and a generous supply of rags

The genuine hazard here is vapor, not liquid. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air and pool at floor level exactly where you will be working under the tank, so open the door wide and place a fan on the ground moving air outward. Shut down anything with a flame or hot element in the same space, including water heater pilots. Carry soaked rags outside immediately instead of leaving them beside the quad.

Depressurizing and Pulling the Old Hose

Kill the pressure before anything else. Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank in short bursts until the engine quits and will not restart, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. That sequence takes a minute and prevents a spray of gasoline the moment a fitting breaks loose.

Remove the seat and the front bodywork blocking the tank outlet and hose run. Slide the pan underneath and keep a rag cupped around each fitting as you open it, because residual fuel stays in the hose even with pressure gone. Push clamps well back along the hose before rotating anything. If your machine has a locking quick–connect at the tank, depress the tabs squarely and pull straight off. Aged plastic collars crack when pried at an angle, and replacing one is a far bigger job than the hose itself.

Varnish frequently glues old hose to a barb. Twist gently to break that bond rather than hauling on it, and if the hose refuses to budge, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off in strips. Track every clip and guide on the way out, and take pictures. Reinstalling along a slightly different path is a common source of chafing on a 4x4 chassis with this much hardware packed around the frame.

Installation and Final Verification

Cut the replacement to match the original exactly. Extra length rubs frame edges or catches steering components; a short piece puts tension on both fittings. Push each end fully home on its barb, completely dry. Never apply grease, oil, or silicone to a fuel fitting, because a lubricated sealing surface is precisely what allows pressurized fuel to creep out under a clamp. Hot water for a few seconds softens a stubborn end enough to slide on.

Seat new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, firm without cutting into the rubber. A self–locking quick–connect gets pushed until it clicks and then tugged to confirm engagement, with no clamp added. Return the hose to every original clip so it sits clear of the driveline and exhaust.

To verify, refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the circuit and lets you inspect dry joints at your own pace. Wipe both connections, look closely, and feel for beading. Then start the engine, watch at idle, blip the throttle, and check a final time.
