The 2017 Recon ES keeps things refreshingly simple under its plastics. Honda built this 229cc single with a carburetor rather than fuel injection, so what you are working on is a gravity-fed circuit: fuel tank up high, a manual petcock valve threaded into the tank, and a short run of rubber hose dropping down to the carburetor inlet. Nothing is pressurized, no pump needs to be disabled, and the electric shift hardware sits entirely outside the fuel path. That simplicity cuts both ways, though — with no pump or filter housing in the middle, that one piece of hose is the only thing standing between a full tank and a starved engine.

What Ages a Recon Fuel Hose

Rubber fuel line does not wear out from use so much as from time. The compound relies on plasticizers to stay soft, and those slowly migrate out over years of heat cycles from the air-cooled cylinder sitting inches away. A hose that was pliable when the Recon rolled off the showroom floor gradually turns stiff, then glassy, and finally starts to check with fine surface cracks. Riders in arid regions watch this happen faster, because low humidity draws moisture from the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in.

Ethanol works the opposite direction. Pump gas cut with ethanol pulls water vapor out of the air and attacks the inner liner, softening and swelling it while the exterior continues to harden. When a Recon sits between hunting seasons with a half tank of E10 in it, the fuel in that short line has plenty of time to leave behind gum and varnish. On a machine of this age the hose can look presentable and still be shedding debris toward the carburetor's tiny jets.

Symptoms That Point at the Line

A tired hose usually gives you warning before it splits. Walk around the quad and look for:

  • A fuel puddle or damp spot under the engine after the Recon has sat overnight with the petcock on
  • A gasoline smell that lingers around the tank area even hours after shutdown
  • Visible checking, a chalky gray cast, or a hard section you can feel when you pinch the hose between two fingers
  • Bogging under load, a stumble when you get on the throttle, or the engine acting like it is running low on fuel with plenty in the tank
  • A dust-caked ring at either fitting, which is the signature of fuel seeping and drying repeatedly

Because the Recon feeds by gravity, a weeping line leaks whenever the petcock is open, whether the engine is running or not. That is different from a fuel-injected quad, where a small pressure-side leak often atomizes and evaporates without ever leaving a drip to find.

Setting Up a Safe Workspace

Gather everything before you crack the first fitting so you are never holding an open hose with one hand and hunting for a tool with the other. You want nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils quickly; a sealed container rated for fuel; replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter; fresh clamps of the same style Honda used; a flat-blade screwdriver; pliers; and shop rags. A small drain pan under the carburetor catches what comes out of the float bowl.

Do this work outside or with the garage door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a window cracked at head height does nothing for you. Keep water heaters, shop heaters, grinders, and anything with a pilot light well clear, and let the engine cool completely first — the exhaust header on this air-cooled single stays hot long after shutdown.

Pulling the Old Hose Off

Turn the petcock to the off position first. That one move is the biggest advantage a carbureted Recon has over an injected machine, where you would instead pinch the hose closed with line-clamping pliers because there is no valve to shut. Remove the seat and lift off the plastic covering the tank so you can see both ends of the hose and its routing clips.

Loosen the carburetor float bowl drain screw and let the bowl empty into your pan, then slide the clamps back along the hose before you disturb either fitting. Twist the hose gently at the barb to break the varnish bond rather than yanking it straight off. If it has hardened onto the fitting and refuses to budge, slice it lengthwise with a razor blade and peel it away — sacrificing a hose you are replacing anyway beats cracking a petcock spigot. Note every clip and clearance point as it comes free. The Recon ES is a two-wheel-drive machine, so the run is short and unobstructed; on a 4x4 utility quad the same hose often has to thread around front differential hardware and extra crossmembers.

Getting the New Line Seated

Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Extra slack lets the hose sag against the cylinder or chafe on a frame tube, and a hose cut short puts constant tension on both barbs. Push each end on dry until it bottoms out against the shoulder of the fitting, covering the full barb length. Skip the grease, oil, and silicone entirely — any lubricant on a sealing surface gives fuel a path to creep along, and it can migrate into the carburetor. If the new hose is stiff, dip the end in hot water for a few seconds to soften it enough to slide on.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Return the hose to its original guides so it stays away from the header and the electric shift motor wiring.

Final Leak Check Before You Load Up

Snug the float bowl drain screw, then turn the petcock back on and simply watch for a full minute. Gravity feed means any bad joint will show itself immediately. Wipe both connections with a clean dry rag and look again — a rag catches seepage your eyes will miss. Start the engine, let it idle a few minutes, and check once more with the hose warm and vibrating, which is when a marginal clamp finally gives up.

While you are in there, pull and rinse the small strainer screen in the petcock; it collects the same debris a failing line sheds. That screen is one more thing owners of carbureted quads can service directly, where fuel-injected models tuck their filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly and offer nothing serviceable on the visible line. Once both joints stay dry, put the plastics and seat back on and go ride.
