The Fuel Line on a 2017 Honda Rincon 680 4x4 and How to Replace It

Oil gets changed, air filters get cleaned, tires get checked, and the fuel hose on a 2017 Rincon 680 gets ignored until it fails. It is a small rubber part hidden under the seat plastics, and it carries every drop of fuel the engine burns. Adding it to your inspection routine costs nothing, and replacing it when it starts to age is one of the cheapest pieces of insurance on the machine.

The Component Nobody Thinks to Check

Nothing about a fuel hose invites attention. It has no moving parts, it makes no noise, and it sits out of sight behind plastics that most owners only remove when something is already wrong. Meanwhile it lives in a warm part of the frame, flexes with every bit of chassis movement, and holds pressurized gasoline for the entire life of the machine. On a Rincon that has seen most of a decade of seasons, that hose is a wear item whether or not anyone has looked at it. Pull the seat once a year, put a light on it, and squeeze it in a few places. Soft and springy is good. Hard, glassy, chalky, or cracked means it is time.

Injection Changes the Procedure

Your 2017 Rincon 680 is fuel injected. An electric pump inside the tank supplies the throttle body under pressure, and there is no manual fuel valve anywhere in the system to shut flow off. That means the pressure has to be relieved intentionally before a fitting is opened, and it means you cannot simply close a petcock and walk away as you could on a carbureted quad. There is also no float bowl to drain. Some connections use a self locking quick connect coupler rather than a clamp, and the fuel filter is built into the in tank pump assembly instead of hanging inline on the visible hose.

The 4x4 driveline affects access. A front differential and driveshaft fill the forward frame and independent rear suspension hardware sits behind, so the hose follows a clipped route with deliberate clearance from rotating parts and hot exhaust. That route needs to be duplicated exactly on reassembly.

The Mechanics of Fuel Hose Failure

Rubber fuel line ages out on a schedule set by chemistry rather than use. The plasticizers that keep it flexible slowly leave the compound, and the hose stiffens until it fractures wherever it bends. Repeated warm up and cool down cycles from the engine, ultraviolet exposure, and ozone all drive that process. Riders in dry, low humidity regions see it earliest, because arid air pulls residual moisture out of the hose wall and leaves the surface glazed and brittle well ahead of schedule.

Meanwhile, ethanol blended pump gas works on the inside. The alcohol content absorbs atmospheric moisture, and fuel left standing through an off season begins breaking down the inner liner while depositing gum and varnish around each barb. That combination produces hoses that look presentable and are nonetheless shedding fine material toward an injector with an extremely small orifice.

Symptoms and Preparation

Signs worth acting on include a gasoline smell around the tank that is strongest immediately after shutdown, a puddle or dark stain on the skid plate, fine cracking or a chalky texture on the hose, a caked ring of dirt at a fitting, and an engine that bogs on throttle, hesitates under load, or behaves as though the tank is empty. On a pressurized system a supply leak can atomize and evaporate before it drips, so a strong odor with a clean floor is not a false alarm.

Gather the following before you begin:

  • Fuel injection rated hose in the original inside diameter
  • New clamps sized to the fittings, plus a quick connect release tool if a locking coupler is present
  • Line clamping pliers, since this model has no petcock to stop flow
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, and a stack of rags
  • A drain pan and a sealable metal or fuel rated container
  • Small sockets, a flat blade screwdriver, and a sharp utility blade

Ventilation is a real concern, not a formality. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles along the floor, where you cannot smell it well and where a spark is most likely to reach it. Open the door completely, put a fan at ground level moving air out, shut off any appliance with a standing pilot in the same space, keep an extinguisher within reach, and cap the fuel container between pours.

Taking the Old Hose Out

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the starter briefly until the engine stalls or refuses to catch, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the plastic panels over the tank so both ends of the hose are visible. Slide the drain pan underneath and lay a rag over the first fitting you separate, because a relieved line still carries fuel.

Move each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. For a quick connect, compress the locking tabs evenly and pull straight off with no side loading, since aged plastic collars snap. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond at the barb, then pull it off steadily. If it refuses to release, cut it lengthwise with your blade and peel it away rather than prying against the pump module or throttle body fitting. Photograph the clips and clearance points around the front driveline before the old hose leaves the frame.

Installation and the Leak Check

Trim the replacement to the length of the original, then push each end fully onto its barb dry, using hot water only if the rubber resists. Keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely off the fittings; lubricant on a sealing surface both creates a leak path and lets the hose migrate off the barb under pressure and vibration. Position new clamps immediately behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting into the rubber. Where a self locking coupler is used, push until it clicks and then tug hard to confirm the latch; a clamp adds nothing there.

Reseat the hose in its original clips, refit the pump fuse, and Reconnect the battery. Cycle the key on and off several times without starting so the pump pressurizes the line while you inspect clean, dry joints under working pressure. Wipe both fittings and check again, then start the engine and look a third time at idle with the machine vibrating. Finish with a short slow lap and one more inspection before the bodywork returns. If a fuel delivery complaint survives a leak free install, the in tank filter and pump assembly is the next place to investigate.
