Fuel hose is the cheapest thing on a Rancher that can put the machine out of commission, and it fails on a schedule rather than by accident. Before you begin on a 2017 Rancher 420 4x4, understand what you are dealing with: this is a fuel-injected machine with an electric pump inside the tank, no petcock anywhere on the chassis, and a supply line that stays pressurized after the key comes out. That single fact dictates the order of operations.
Why Rubber Fuel Line Wears Out
The hose hardens because the plasticizers that keep it flexible slowly migrate out of the rubber. Once the wall is stiff, the heat cycles coming off the engine and the endless vibration of a chassis that hauls loads over rough ground stop being absorbed and start being turned into cracks, usually at the tightest bend near a fitting. Owners in dry, high-desert country see that timeline shorten noticeably, since low humidity strips residual moisture from the hose and hardens it from the outside in.
Ethanol in modern gas handles the inside. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and slowly breaks down the inner liner, and a Rancher that sits through a long stretch with fuel standing in the line comes out with a hose that has gone soft internally and started shedding material toward the injector. Because the circuit carries pressure, a section weakened this way tends to fail decisively instead of dripping for weeks, which is why age is the better trigger for replacement than appearance.
What a Failing Line Tells You

- A dust-caked collar at a fitting where seeping fuel has dried and gathered grime
- Wetness or a small puddle on the skid plate or garage floor
- Cracking, a chalky surface, or a hardened section that will not spring back when pinched
- Bogging under load, stumbling on hard acceleration, or lean running at higher rpm
Because pressurized fuel often atomizes before it can drip, the absence of a puddle proves nothing. If the machine smells like gasoline and you cannot find the source, keep hunting rather than assuming it is nothing.
Preparation, Pressure Relief, and Gasoline Safety
Set out what you need first: injection-rated fuel line in the correct inside diameter, new clamps to suit the fittings on your machine, line-clamping pliers, a small pick for a retainer-clip quick-connect, nitrile gloves, plenty of rags, a catch pan, an approved sealable fuel can, and sockets for the seat, rack, and side plastics.
Then relieve pressure. Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it starts and stalls, shut the key off, and disconnect the negative battery lead so the pump stays dead while your hands are in the fuel path. Residual fuel will still be in the line, so keep a rag over each fitting as you open it.
The safety piece here is real. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level right where you kneel, so open the door fully or work outside, and clear the space of heaters, pilot lights, and anything that arcs. Let the engine and exhaust cool completely first, because pressurized fuel meeting a hot header is the scenario worth engineering out of your day.
Taking the Line Out and Getting the New One In
Pull the seat and the side plastics so you can see the pump flange on the tank and follow the hose to the throttle body. At a quick-connect coupler, depress the locking tabs squarely and draw the fitting straight off with no sideways leverage, since a plastic collar that has aged in the weather will crack if you pry it. At a clamped fitting, slide the clamp back along the hose, then rotate the hose to break the varnish bond before pulling. Any end that refuses to let go can be split lengthwise with a razor and peeled away, which is always safer than force.
Photograph the routing before the old hose is out. The 4x4 driveline puts front differential and driveshaft hardware in the neighborhood, so the line follows guides that keep it clear of moving components and hot surfaces, and reproducing that exactly is part of the repair.
Cut the replacement to the same length as the original. Push each end fully over its barb until it seats past the bead, working dry. Hot water on a stubborn end softens it enough to slide. Keep grease, oil, and silicone off every fitting — lubricant on a sealing surface prevents the rubber from gripping and gives pressurized fuel a route straight out. Set the new clamps just behind the bead and tighten evenly, firm but not cutting in. On a self-locking quick-connect, push until it clicks and then tug hard to confirm it latched, and leave the clamp off that style entirely.
Testing Before You Trust It
Refit the pump fuse and Reconnect the battery, then cycle the ignition on and off several times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and charges the line, letting you check both connections while they are dry and clean. Wipe them and check again. Start the engine, let it idle at full pressure, and inspect a third time with the fittings vibrating, then take a short lap and look once more before the plastics go back on for good.
Finally, one thing to remember about the injected 420: the fuel filter is built into the pump assembly inside the tank rather than sitting inline where you can reach it with a screwdriver. New hose will not fix a clogged filter, so if the 2017 Rancher still bogs or runs lean after a clean, leak-free install, the in-tank module is your next stop rather than the line you just replaced.
