Fuel hose is one of the few parts on a Rancher that fails purely from time passing. It does not wear like a brake pad or a chain, it simply loses the properties that made it work. Understanding that helps you decide whether the line on your 2017 Rancher 420 4x4 ES deserves replacing now rather than at the moment it lets go somewhere unhelpful.
The Two Failure Mechanisms at Work
Fuel line rubber is compounded with plasticizers that keep it soft and elastic. Every heat cycle from the 420 single drives a fraction of that out permanently, and the hose slowly stiffens until it can no longer squeeze itself down onto the barb it sits on. Once the material stops conforming, a joint that was dry for years starts weeping with no visible crack anywhere. Riders in dry, arid regions reach this point sooner, because low ambient humidity continuously draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens the outer jacket ahead of any hour meter based expectation.
Working the other direction, ethanol blended gasoline absorbs atmospheric water and gradually attacks the inner liner. It softens and swells the inner wall and leaves gum and varnish behind, and it does the most damage during stretches when the machine sits unused with fuel in the system. The net result is a hose that is brittle on the outside and deteriorating on the inside, and one that looks entirely acceptable from three feet away.
Injection Adds One More Stress
Your 2017 Rancher is fuel injected, which means the hose is not just carrying fuel, it is containing pressure. A pump mounted inside the tank supplies the throttle body through a short line that stays pressurized whenever the key is on and for a while after you switch it off. A hardened section that would merely seep on a gravity fed carbureted quad can push fuel out steadily here.
There is no petcock anywhere on this machine to shut off flow, so the pressure has to be relieved deliberately before anything is opened. The fuel filter and pressure regulator both live inside the tank as part of the pump module rather than sitting inline on the visible hose, which is worth remembering when you are diagnosing a fuel starvation complaint. Some injected connections use a self locking quick connect coupler with internal tabs instead of a clamp, and where you find one it needs no clamp added.
Catching Trouble Before It Strands You
- Gasoline odor around the quad that is strongest right after shutdown, while pressure is still in the circuit
- Dampness or a small puddle on the skid plate or shop floor beneath the tank
- Fine cracking, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels hard and glassy when pinched
- Dirt caked into a ring at a fitting, which is grit stuck to fuel that has seeped and dried
- Bogging on climbs, a stumble when the throttle snaps open, lean surging at steady speed, or hard starting after an overnight sit
On an injected machine a small pressure side leak may never leave a puddle, since escaping fuel atomizes and evaporates quickly. A persistent smell with nothing on the floor is still a legitimate finding.
Parts, Tools, and Ventilation That Actually Works
- Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection, because fuel under pressure sprays rather than drips
- Hose rated for fuel injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- Line clamping pliers for pinching any low pressure section, since there is no petcock to close
- Fresh clamps suited to the fittings you find, and a quick connect release tool if your machine uses a locking coupler
- An approved container with a funnel for captured fuel, a razor, a hose pick, and a stack of rags
- Sockets and drivers for the seat and the plastic panels over the tank
Do not treat ventilation as a box to tick. Gasoline fumes sink rather than rise, collecting at floor level exactly where you will be lying to reach the fittings, which is why a cracked window six feet up accomplishes nothing. Open the overhead door completely or move the machine outdoors. Keep heaters, grinders, and any flame out of the area, and cap the container whenever you are not pouring into it.
Bleeding Down and Removing the Old Line
Disable the pump circuit by pulling its fuse or unplugging the pump connector, then crank the engine briefly so it burns off the fuel still in the line and stalls. Switch the key off and disconnect the battery negative terminal. Pull the seat and the plastics over the tank so you can see the pump outlet and the full hose run to the throttle body.
Slide a pan underneath and lay a rag over the first fitting you open, because residual fuel remains even after the pressure is gone. Move any clamp well back before disturbing the joint, then twist the hose on its barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling straight against it. Release a quick connect by depressing the tabs squarely and pulling straight, with no sideways prying, since aged plastic collars crack when levered. Slit a hardened end lengthwise with the razor if it will not release. Note the routing as it comes out; this 4x4 with electric shift threads its line past the front driveline, extra frame structure, and the shift motor harness.
Installation and the Final Pressure Test
Trim the new hose to the original length so it neither chafes on the frame nor pulls at the fittings, then seat each end fully and dry until it bottoms against the shoulder. Nothing slick belongs on a fuel connection, so keep grease, oil, and silicone spray away entirely. On a pressurized circuit a lubricated barb is a leak waiting for a warm afternoon. Hot water briefly softens a stubborn end enough to slide on.
Fit new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten evenly. Push a quick connect until the collar clicks, then tug firmly to confirm it latched. Route the hose through its original clips so it clears the exhaust and the front driveshaft. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting; each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line while everything is still dry enough to inspect properly. Wipe both joints with a clean rag and read the rag. Start the engine, let it idle to temperature, and check again before the bodywork goes back on.
