Spotting a Bad Fuel Line and Replacing It on a 2017 Rancher 420 4x4 DCT IRS

Fuel line trouble on a 2017 Rancher 420 4x4 DCT IRS often announces itself through your nose rather than your eyes. Because this machine is fuel injected and its feed hose stays pressurized after shutdown, a small leak tends to atomize and evaporate before it can form a puddle. That means the classic advice to look for a wet spot only catches part of what is happening.
The Symptoms This Machine Actually Shows
- A gasoline smell around the parked quad, usually strongest in the first minutes after shutdown while the system still holds pressure
- A damp sheen, wet streak, or outright puddle beneath the tank area or along a frame rail
- Fine cracking, crazing, or a chalky gray texture on the hose surface
- A section of hose that feels rigid rather than rubbery when you pinch it
- Bogging under load, hesitation on hard acceleration, or an engine that behaves as though it is running out of fuel at higher rpm
- Dust caked into a dark ring at a fitting, the residue of fuel weeping and drying repeatedly
Weeping at a fitting is the most common presentation on a pressurized circuit. Hardened hose loses its ability to conform tightly around a barb, so the seal degrades at the joint long before the middle of the hose splits open.
Understanding the Injected Fuel System
This Rancher has no petcock. An electric pump module sits submerged in the fuel tank, pressurizes a feed hose that runs to the throttle body, and carries the fuel filter inside the tank as part of its own assembly rather than inline where you can reach it. That is a genuine departure from the carbureted Ranchers of earlier years, which offer a mechanical shutoff valve, gravity feed, ordinary clamped barbs, and a float bowl drain screw for emptying the low side deliberately.
The practical consequences are twofold. First, the circuit must be depressurized before any fitting is opened. Second, with no valve to close, a pair of line–clamping pliers becomes a useful tool for pinching off a hose and limiting spillage. Connections may also differ from what you expect: the pump outlet on injected machines often uses a self–locking quick–connect coupler that releases by depressing plastic tabs and needs no clamp at all.
The dual clutch transmission and independent rear suspension are irrelevant to the fuel plumbing. The 4x4 driveline does affect access, since a front differential and propeller shaft take up space under the frame that a two–wheel–drive layout leaves clear, so the hose runs through slightly tighter clearance and its clips matter on reassembly.
Why the Rubber Gives Up
Fuel hose is flexible because of plasticizers blended into the rubber during manufacture, and those compounds slowly migrate out and evaporate over the years. Heat cycling from the liquid–cooled 420cc engine and nearby exhaust surfaces accelerates the process, and the hose stiffens, dulls, and eventually cracks at its tightest bend. Dry, low–humidity regions push that timeline forward by pulling moisture out of the rubber wall.
Ethanol–blended pump gas attacks the liner from within. Fuel left standing during a long idle stretch draws in atmospheric moisture and degrades the inner surface, sending fine debris downstream. On an injected engine that debris matters more than it would on a carbureted one, because injector passages are considerably smaller than carburetor jets.
Parts, Tools, and Air Movement
Assemble hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the original inside diameter rather than general purpose carburetor tubing, fresh clamps matching whatever style you find, a quick–connect release tool if the pump outlet uses a locking coupler, line–clamping pliers, nitrile gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, a sealed approved fuel container, sockets and a trim tool for the seat and side plastics, rags, and a flashlight.
Ventilation deserves real attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means that in an enclosed garage it sinks and pools across the floor at exactly the height you kneel instead of rising and venting away. Roll the Rancher outdoors if conditions allow, and otherwise open the door completely and set a fan at ground level pushing air out of the building. Extinguish pilot lights on water heaters and furnaces, and move battery chargers, grinders, and any other ignition source well clear before you start.
Bleeding Down and Getting the Old Hose Off
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, then start the engine and let it run until it starves and stalls. Switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. That sequence relieves system pressure and is the mandatory first move on this machine, not an optional precaution.
Remove the seat and the side plastics covering the tank outlet and the hose run heading to the throttle body. Slide a drain pan underneath and lay a rag over the first fitting you open, because a depressurized line still contains residual fuel. Slide any clamp well back before disturbing a hose end. For a quick–connect coupler, depress the tabs evenly and pull straight off without prying, since aged plastic collars crack when levered. Twist the old hose to break the varnish bond rather than yanking it, and slit a genuinely seized end lengthwise with a blade and peel it away rather than risking damage to the fitting. Note every clip and clearance point as the hose comes out.
Installing the Replacement and Proving It Dry
Cut the new hose to match the original length exactly. Extra length is not helpful, because a long hose chafes on the frame or drifts toward hot surfaces. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms, and work dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all leave a film on the sealing surface that gives pressurized fuel a route to creep out, so none of them belong here. A stubborn hose end softens fine after a brief dip in hot water.
Seat new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly until the hose is gripped firmly. Where a self–locking quick–connect is used, push it on until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm it has latched; adding a clamp there is neither needed nor helpful. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays clear of the front driveline and exhaust.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you examine both joints while everything around them is still dry. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag and inspect again, then start the engine and check once more with a light after several minutes at idle. Only then should the plastics go back on. Remember that the filter on this Rancher lives inside the tank with the pump, so if fuel delivery symptoms survive a clean hose replacement, that in–tank assembly is the logical next step.
