Changing the Fuel Line on a 2017 Honda Rancher 420 4x4 DCT EPS

No petcock, no float bowl, no inline filter. Those three absences define what you are dealing with underneath the seat of a 2017 Rancher 420 4x4 DCT EPS, and they explain why this fuel line replacement reads differently from the same job on an older carbureted quad. Once you internalize them, the work itself is well within reach at home.
Three Things This Machine Does Not Have
Start with the shutoff valve. A gravity–fed carbureted ATV lets you close a petcock and stop fuel at the tank, and that is your first move on those machines. The 2017 Rancher 420 uses PGM–FI with an electric pump inside the tank, so there is no valve to close and no gravity to work with. Line–clamping pliers do the job the petcock would have done.
Next, the float bowl. On a carbureted machine, cracking that drain empties the lowest point in the system and takes most of the mess out of the job. There is no carburetor here, so instead you relieve pressure electrically and catch what remains in the hose with a pan and rags.
Finally, the filter. Owners looking for a serviceable inline element partway along the hose will not find one, because the filter is built into the tank–mounted pump module alongside the pressure regulator. From that module a single pressurized hose runs forward along the frame to the throttle body feeding the 420cc single.
The Failure Mechanism Behind Old Hose
Fuel line does not wear out so much as change character. The plasticizers that make rubber flexible gradually migrate out under years of heat cycling, and a hose that started soft ends up stiff, glossy, and eventually chalky. Dry climates compress that timeline, because low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the surface inward. A hose with no give left cannot absorb the chassis flex a working utility 4x4 produces, so strain gathers at bends and at the shoulder behind each clamp until hairline cracks appear.
The inner liner faces ethanol–blended fuel. E10 pulls moisture in from the air and slowly breaks the liner down, and a Rancher parked for months with fuel in the system gives that chemistry uninterrupted time to soften the material and leave gum deposits. Since that damage never shows on the exterior, a hose can pass a visual check and still be shedding debris toward an injector that tolerates very little of it.
Symptoms That Point at the Fuel Plumbing
- A gasoline smell near the seat and tank, strongest in the first minutes after shutdown while residual pressure bleeds off
- A damp patch or small puddle under the machine after it has sat parked
- Cracking that opens when you bend the hose, or a stiff, hardened section you can feel by pinching it
- A dust–caked ring at a fitting, left where seeping fuel trapped dirt and dried in place
- Bogging under load, hesitation as the throttle comes on, or a lean stumble like the tank is nearly empty
- Cranking that lasts longer than it used to, meaning pressure is not holding overnight
Bear in mind that a pressure–side pinhole can atomize fuel so completely that nothing ever reaches the ground. A clean floor is not evidence of a healthy line on this machine.
Tools, Parts, and a Word on Gasoline
Set out hose rated for injection pressure in the matching inside diameter, new clamps in the correct style, a quick–disconnect release tool if your coupler needs one, line–clamping pliers, nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed fuel container with a wide catch pan, a socket set for the seat and plastics, a small pick for spring clips, a razor knife, and more rags than seems necessary.
Ventilation matters in a specific way here. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and gathers along the floor of a closed garage, right at the level where water heater and furnace pilots live. Work outdoors or with the door fully open so air moves at ground level, shut down every flame and glowing element in the space, avoid drop lights with exposed bulbs, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within arm's reach before you break the first seal.
Taking the Line Off
Depressurize before touching a fitting. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the plastics over the tank so the full hose run is accessible. Slide the drain pan underneath and cover each fitting with a rag as you open it, because a bled circuit still holds liquid fuel in the hose.
Retract every clamp along the hose before disturbing its fitting. Quick–connect couplers separate when you press both tabs evenly and pull straight back, and sideways prying is what cracks an aged plastic collar. Barbed fittings respond to a gentle twist that shears the varnish bond, and a hose that has bonded itself to a spigot should be slit lengthwise and peeled off rather than pulled hard. Follow the routing as it comes free. On this 4x4 chassis, the line passes front differential hardware and additional frame members that a two–wheel–drive quad does not carry, which adds clips and clearance points worth photographing before everything is out.
New Hose In and the Final Pressure Check
Cut the replacement to match the original exactly. Long hose chafes on the frame or drifts into moving components, while short hose loads both fittings every time the suspension works. Push each end fully home until it bottoms on the barb, and assemble dry. Nothing lubricated belongs on a fuel fitting, because grease or oil on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a direct path past the clamp. Soften a stiff end with a few seconds in hot water if it resists. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten them evenly, snug rather than biting deep into the rubber. A self–locking coupler is simply pushed until it clicks and then tugged to verify the latch, with no clamp added. Return the hose to every original clip so it stays away from exhaust heat and the front driveline.
Refit the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line while both joints are still clean and dry, which is the best possible condition for spotting a weep. Wipe the connections, start the engine, and inspect once more at idle and after a few throttle blips. Several minutes of leak–free running should pass before the plastics and seat go back on. If the Rancher still runs like it is starved, the filter inside the pump module is the next component to look at, since this model gives you no external element to eliminate first.
