Replacing the fuel line on a 2017 Rancher 420 2x4 is a short job with one non-negotiable requirement: know what you are opening before you open it. This generation is fuel-injected, so the hose between the tank and the throttle body carries pressure supplied by a pump mounted inside the tank, and it holds that pressure well after the engine has stopped.

Relieving Pressure Comes First

On a carbureted quad you would simply close a fuel valve. This Rancher has none, so the equivalent step is disabling the pump. Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the starter for a few seconds until the engine stalls and will not restart, then switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. That sequence bleeds the line down and removes any chance of the pump running while a fitting is open. Line-clamping pliers cover the rest, letting you pinch off a section of hose that would otherwise drain the tank.

How Hoses Come Apart Over the Years

Fuel hose owes its flexibility to plasticizers in the rubber, and the engine's heat cycles gradually drive them out. What remains is stiff, and stiff hose cannot absorb the vibration and frame flex of a machine that spends its life on rough ground. Cracks form at bends and under clamps, exactly where the material was already working hardest.

Where the Rancher lives matters as well. Dry, arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall year after year, so lines harden considerably faster in high-desert country than in humid regions. Working from the other direction, ethanol-blended pump gas left standing in the line pulls in water and degrades the inner liner, softening it and producing gum. That interior damage is completely hidden, which is why the calendar is a fair basis for replacing a hose that still looks intact.

Symptoms Worth Investigating

  • A gasoline smell around the seat and tank that lingers after shutdown
  • A puddle or damp streak on the floor beneath the frame after the machine sits
  • Cracking, glazing, or a chalky haze anywhere along the hose
  • A hardened stretch that will not compress between your fingers
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or an engine acting like the tank is dry

Keep in mind that a pressurized pinhole sprays a fine mist that evaporates before it can drip. On this machine, an unexplained fuel odor is worth more attention than a clean floor.

Supplies and Working Safely With Gasoline

You will want gloves and eye protection, a sealed gasoline-rated container, a drain pan, replacement hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for injection pressure, fresh clamps, a quick-disconnect release tool if your Rancher has locking couplers, line-clamping pliers, a razor blade, a small flat-blade screwdriver, sockets for the seat and covers, and plenty of rags.

The safety concern is specific and worth stating clearly. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles on the floor and travels along it rather than rising and dispersing. That puts it at the same height as water heater pilots, space heaters, and extension cord connections. Work outdoors or with the overhead door fully open, shut down every flame source in the building, keep an extinguisher within reach, cap your container the instant it holds fuel, and carry soaked rags outside.

Getting the Old Hose Out

With the system depressurized and the battery disconnected, remove the seat and the panels covering the tank. Follow the hose from the pump flange to the throttle body, noting every clip and guide, and photograph the routing before anything moves. On this 2WD chassis the path is straightforward, without the front differential and driveshaft that 4x4 models require the line to clear.

Slide the drain pan under the joint you plan to open first and hold a rag against it, since residual fuel remains in the hose regardless of how thoroughly you bled it. Retract clamps well back along the hose. A locking coupler releases only with both tabs pressed squarely and a straight pull; prying sideways cracks the collar. Where old varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, slice it lengthwise and peel it off instead of twisting on a fitting you intend to reuse.

Fitting the Replacement and Checking It

Cut the new hose to the length of the original so it neither chafes nor pulls at its ends. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it bottoms out, working it on dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely away from the sealing surfaces; anything slick there lets pressurized fuel migrate past the clamp. Hot water is the correct way to soften a tight hose end. Set new clamps behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly, and where a self-locking quick-connect is used, install it without a clamp, pushing until it clicks and tugging to confirm.

Refit the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times so the pump pressurizes the line while the engine remains off. Inspect both joints with a light and a clean rag, then start the engine and check again at idle and with the throttle blipped. Reinstall the plastics after a few minutes of dry running. One closing note on this platform: the filter is integrated with the in-tank pump rather than sitting inline, so a fuel delivery complaint that persists after a clean hose swap points toward that assembly.
