Hard riding does not wear out a fuel line so much as time does. The hose on a 2017 Renegade 850 X XC hardens season by season whether the machine is charging cross-country trails or sitting in a corner of the shop, and by the time it cracks it has usually been giving warning signs for a while. Here is how to catch those signs and do the replacement properly.

Symptoms That Send You Looking

The strongest evidence is your nose. A pressurized injection circuit holds fuel under pressure long after shutdown, so a gasoline smell that hangs around a parked X XC — especially in the first few minutes after you kill the engine — usually beats any visible leak by weeks. Follow the smell with a flashlight and clean fingers.

Visual signs come next: a wet stain on the skid plate, a small puddle on the floor beneath the tank area, a fine web of surface cracks on the hose, a chalky whitened exterior, or a ring of caked dirt at a fitting where fuel has been seeping and drying. Pinch along the hose and note anywhere it feels glassy and rigid rather than soft. On the running side, watch for bogging under load, hesitation when you open the throttle hard, or the machine behaving like it is nearly out of gas. Remember that a pressure-side pinhole often mists fuel that evaporates before it drips, so a dry floor does not clear the hose.

How This Renegade Moves Fuel

The 2017 Renegade 850 X XC is fuel injected, with the Rotax 850 V-twin fed by an electric pump module inside the fuel tank. There is no petcock beneath the tank because nothing here gravity feeds. The line stays pressurized after shutdown, which makes relieving pressure the actual first step of the job rather than an optional precaution. That in-tank module also houses the fuel filter, so the hose you are replacing carries no serviceable inline element.

As a 4x4, the X XC routes its fuel hose past front differential mounting hardware and additional frame structure. The steps match a two-wheel-drive quad exactly; there are simply a few more clips and clearance points to keep straight when the old hose comes out.

The Chemistry and Physics of Hose Failure

Two things wear a fuel line out. Heat cycling from the engine drives plasticizers out of the rubber compound over years, and the hose stiffens until it can no longer flex with the chassis. At that point, normal vibration deepens fine surface checking into cracks. Dry climates make it worse, because low ambient humidity continuously pulls moisture from the hose wall and hardens it from the outer surface inward.

Ethanol-blended pump gas works the inside. E10 takes on and holds water, and when the machine sits for a season with that fuel standing in the line, alcohol degrades the inner liner while the volatile fractions evaporate and leave gum behind. So the hose hardens on one face and breaks down on the other at the same time, which is why a line that looks acceptable can still be shedding fine particulate toward the injectors.

Assembling Parts and Setting Up Safely

  • Rubber or nitrile gloves — gasoline absorbs through skin and strips it of oils
  • A sealed metal or fuel-rated plastic container for drained fuel, plus a drain pan
  • Replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, rated for injection pressure and not general purpose carburetor tubing
  • New clamps in the existing style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end is a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, filling the role the missing petcock would have played
  • Sockets and drivers for seat and side panels, a small flat screwdriver, a fresh razor blade, and a generous stack of rags

Do this in the open air or with the garage door raised to its stop. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level rather than venting out a high window, so ground level ventilation is the part that protects you. Remove every ignition source from the area first, including space heaters, appliance pilot lights, grinders, and hot incandescent lamps.

Taking the Line Off the Machine

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine until it stalls, which burns off residual pressure. Shut the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and enough side plastic to reach the tank outlet, then follow the hose back to the throttle body connection.

Set the drain pan beneath the joints and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, since the hose still holds standing fuel with pressure relieved. Slide clamps well clear before disturbing a connection. Quick-connect couplers come apart when both tabs are pressed evenly and the fitting is drawn straight off — do not pry at an angle, because aging plastic collars split easily. If varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, break the seal with a light twist, or slit the hose lengthwise and peel it away rather than stressing the fitting. Photograph the routing before the hose is fully free.

Installation and Verification

Match the new hose to the original for length. A hose cut long drapes into the front driveline or chafes on a frame edge until it fails, so exactness here is protection rather than fussiness. Push each end fully onto its barb, working dry with nothing on the sealing surfaces. Grease, oil, and silicone are all off limits, because a slick film under the hose is exactly the route pressurized fuel takes when it wants out. Warm a stubborn hose end in hot water for a few seconds instead.

Install new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten evenly, snug without crushing. If the tank connection is a self-locking quick-connect, press until the collar clicks and confirm with a firm pull; no clamp belongs there. Reseat the hose in every factory clip so it clears the exhaust and the differential.

Then prove the work before riding. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without starting. Each cycle pressurizes the line while the fittings are still dry and easy to read. Wipe both joints clean, start the engine, and watch them at idle for several minutes, then shut down for a final inspection before the bodywork goes back. If the X XC still runs fuel starved after a clean hose install, look next at the in-tank pump and filter module, since fresh hose cannot cure a clogged strainer.
