Fuel Line Replacement on a 2017 Can-Am Renegade 1000R X MR

Machines that spend their lives in standing water and thick mud ask more of every rubber component on board, and the 2017 Renegade 1000R X MR is built specifically for that world. Its 976cc Rotax V-twin is fuel injected, supplied by an electric pump inside the tank, so the hose running to the throttle body carries pressurized fuel and there is no petcock anywhere to shut it off. That is the first thing to internalize before the bodywork comes off.
Built for Deep Water and Mud
The X MR package raises and protects components that ordinary trail riding never threatens, and it rides on a selectable four-wheel-drive chassis. For fuel line purposes, two consequences follow. First, the supply hose is routed with extra clearance points around front differential hardware and additional frame structure, so expect more clips to release than on a two-wheel-drive quad. Second, clamps and fittings on a machine that regularly goes swimming tend to be corroded, packed with grit, or seized, so plan on replacing every clamp you disturb rather than reusing it. Wash the area down and let it dry before you start, because mud falling into an open fuel fitting is a problem you do not want.
Why the Rubber Hardens and Splits
Two separate processes retire a fuel hose. From the outside, the plasticizers that keep the rubber elastic slowly migrate out, and the V-twin's heat cycling under the plastics speeds their departure. The hose turns stiff and glassy, and then chassis vibration opens hairline cracks in it, concentrated where the line bends rather than along straight sections. Dry, low-humidity climates accelerate the hardening because arid air pulls moisture out of the hose wall.
From the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline attacks the liner. The alcohol content absorbs water and gradually breaks that liner down, softening it and leaving gum in its place. An X MR that sits between mud runs with fuel in the system gives the reaction plenty of quiet time to progress. Because the damage comes from both surfaces, a hose can look fine externally while shedding degraded material toward the injectors, which is why age alone is grounds for replacement.
What a Failing Hose Looks Like on an X MR
Inspect for the following:
- Fuel pooling on the skid plate or dripping to the floor after the machine has been parked
- A gasoline smell around the tank that will not clear, usually strongest right after key-off while pressure remains
- Cracking at the bends, a chalky gray cast, or a section of hose that feels hard and does not spring back
- The engine bogging under load, running lean at higher rpm, or acting like it is nearly out of fuel
- A dirt ring at a fitting, though on a mud machine this is harder to read, so clean the area first and re-inspect after a ride
Since the circuit is pressurized, a small leak often atomizes and evaporates instead of dripping. Trust a persistent odor even when nothing shows on the ground.
Tools, Hose, and Safe Air
Have this collected before you begin:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, because gasoline strips skin oils in seconds
- An approved container for captured fuel and a wide catch pan
- Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter; low-pressure carburetor line will not hold up here
- A full set of new clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank outlet uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers to pinch off a low-pressure section, standing in for the petcock this model lacks
- Sockets and drivers for the seat and plastics, a razor knife, penetrating oil for corroded clamp screws, and plenty of clean rags
On ventilation, the physics is simple and worth respecting: gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects at floor level rather than venting out an overhead window. Work outdoors or with the shop door fully open, and get air moving low in the space. Unplug chargers and heaters, kill any pilot flame, and keep an extinguisher next to you.
Dropping the Pressure Out of the Circuit
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly and let it stall as the residual pressure is used up, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. That sequence depressurizes the line and prevents the pump from energizing while you work. Even then, residual fuel remains, so position the drain pan and drape a rag over the first joint you open.
Removing the Original Hose
With the seat and side panels off, trace the hose from the tank outlet to the throttle body and identify every clip and clearance point. Slide each clamp well back before you apply force to a barb. Corroded worm-gear screws may need penetrating oil and patience; if one refuses to turn, cut the clamp off rather than rounding the screw and fighting it. Spring clips open with pliers. A quick-connect coupler releases when you depress its tabs squarely and pull straight back, never sideways, since aged plastic collars split easily.
Twist each hose end gently to break the varnish bond at the barb. When a hose has bonded itself in place, slice it lengthwise and peel it away rather than risking the fitting. Photograph the routing before the old line is out, and take a moment to clear any packed mud from the surrounding frame while you have access.
Installing the Replacement
Cut the new hose to the exact length of the original. Extra slack lets the line rest against frame tubes or front drive components where mud and grit will grind it thin, a particular concern on a machine that operates in slurry. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting defeat the seal the clamp is trying to make and give pressurized fuel a path out, so keep them away entirely. Soften a stubborn hose end in hot water instead.
Place the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without cutting into the rubber. Where the machine uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until the collar clicks and then pull to confirm engagement; that joint takes no clamp. Return the hose to every original clip so it stays clear of exhaust heat and moving front-drive hardware.
Wet Test and Final Checks
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the circuit and lets you inspect both joints while the area is still clean and dry. Wipe the fittings with a fresh rag and watch closely for a bead. Then start the V-twin and check again at idle, following the entire run with a light. Several minutes of leak-free running plus a short low-speed lap should come before the plastics go back on, and it is worth rechecking the joints once after the first real ride in the mud.
One structural note: the fuel filter on this injected X MR is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline element on the visible hose. Fresh line cures hose problems only, so if the engine still acts starved after a clean installation, the in-tank module is the next place to investigate.
