A tired fuel hose almost never fails politely at the trailhead. It fails at the top of a hill with the throttle open, or it soaks the skid plate overnight in a closed garage. The good news is that the 2017 Renegade 1000R tells you well in advance if you are paying attention. This machine uses the fuel-injected 976cc Rotax V-twin with an electric pump inside the tank, so the hose in question is pressurized and cannot be isolated with a petcock the way a carbureted quad's line can.

First Signs of a Line Going Bad

Give the hose a proper inspection with the plastics off and check for the following:

  • A wet patch or small puddle beneath the machine after it has been parked
  • A gasoline smell hanging around the tank, geneRally strongest right after key-off while pressure is still trapped
  • Hairline cracks at the bends, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels hard and refuses to flex when pinched
  • The engine bogging under load, running lean at higher rpm, or acting like the tank is nearly dry when it is not
  • Dirt caked into a ring around a fitting, which is the residue of fuel weeping and evaporating repeatedly

The last symptom deserves emphasis on an injected machine. Because the circuit is pressurized, escaping fuel often atomizes and evaporates before it forms a drop, so a strong odor with nothing on the floor is still real evidence of a problem.

The Forces That Break Down Fuel Hose

Rubber fuel line is attacked from both sides at once. On the outer surface, aging drives the plasticizers out of the material and leaves a hose wall that is stiff and glassy instead of pliable. The heat this V-twin radiates under the bodywork speeds that up, and once the rubber has hardened, ordinary chassis vibration is enough to crack it. Owners in dry, low-humidity regions see the process run noticeably faster because arid air pulls moisture from the hose.

On the inner surface, ethanol-blended gasoline is the problem. Alcohol in the fuel holds water in suspension and gradually degrades the liner, softening it and leaving gum behind. A 1000R that spends weeks parked with fuel in the system gives that chemistry an easy run. The takeaway is that hose age is a legitimate reason to replace a line, even one that looks acceptable, because the damage often starts where you cannot see it.

Materials and a Word About Fumes

Have everything laid out before you loosen a clamp:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, because gasoline strips the oils out of skin fast
  • An approved container for captured fuel and a wide pan for drips
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure and sized to the original inside diameter, not carburetor-grade line
  • Fresh clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank outlet uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch a low-pressure section closed, which is how you make up for having no petcock
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and side panels, a razor knife, and a stack of clean rags

Here is the part worth taking seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it does not rise and drift away; it sinks and pools at floor level, exactly where you will be kneeling. Work outdoors or with the shop door raised all the way, and move air low in the space. Unplug chargers, heaters, and power tools, shut off any pilot flame, and keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach the whole time.

Taking the System Out of Pressure

Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay first. Crank the engine for a second or two and let it stall as the remaining pressure is consumed, then switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery terminal. With the pump electrically isolated, the hose becomes an ordinary line holding a small amount of residual fuel. Position the drain pan and put a rag over the first fitting you intend to open, because that residual volume will find the floor otherwise.

Separating the Hose From the Fittings

Take off the seat and side plastics, then follow the run from the tank outlet to the throttle body, cataloguing each clip along the way. Slide every clamp well back before applying force to a barb. Spring clips open with pliers; worm-gear clamps just need loosening. A quick-connect coupler releases when you press the tabs squarely and pull straight back, and it splits if you pry it sideways, because those collars grow brittle with age.

Break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist rather than a hard pull. If a hose end has bonded itself in place, slice it lengthwise and peel it off the fitting. As a selectable four-wheel-drive machine, the 1000R routes its supply line past front differential hardware and extra frame bracing that a two-wheel-drive quad does not carry, so photograph the routing and every clearance point before the old hose leaves the chassis.

Fitting the New Piece

Cut the replacement to match the original length precisely. Extra hose sags into frame tubes or front drive components and wears through, and a short piece pulls at its fittings whenever the engine rocks on its mounts. Seat each end fully on its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and assemble it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone belong nowhere near a fuel fitting — a lubricated sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route past the clamp. A few seconds in hot water will soften a reluctant hose end enough to slide on cleanly.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead at each connection and tighten them evenly, firm without cutting into the rubber. Where a self-locking quick-connect is fitted, push until the collar clicks and then tug to confirm engagement, adding no clamp to that joint. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and rotating hardware.

Confirming the Repair Holds

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. The pump runs briefly on each cycle and pressurizes the line, giving you a dry look at both joints before any fuel is moving through the engine. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag and watch for a bead. Then start the V-twin and inspect again at idle, following the whole run with a light while heat and vibration are present. Several minutes of leak-free running plus a slow lap of the yard earns you the right to reinstall the bodywork.

One detail specific to this setup: the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump module rather than sitting inline where you could service it from the hose. A new line fixes hose problems and nothing else, so if the 2017 1000R still runs starved after a careful installation, that in-tank assembly is the next stop.
