Replacing a Worn Fuel Line on a 2017 Can-Am Renegade 1000

Half of a clean fuel line job happens before you touch the machine. Sorting out the right hose, the right clamps, and a safe place to work is what keeps the 2017 Renegade 1000 from turning into a gasoline mess on the floor. This model runs the fuel-injected 976cc Rotax V-twin with an electric pump inside the tank, so the hose you are dealing with is part of a pressurized circuit. There is no petcock lever, no gravity feed, and no float bowl drain to lean on the way a carbureted quad would let you.

Everything You Need on the Bench

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, because gasoline pulls the oils out of bare skin fast
  • An approved metal or fuel-rated plastic container, plus a wide pan for drips
  • Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not low-pressure carburetor line
  • Fresh clamps matched to the fitting style on your machine, and a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank outlet uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch a low-pressure section closed, filling the role a petcock would play on a carbureted model
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and side panels, a sharp razor knife, and more clean rags than you think you need

Now the part that actually matters for your safety. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it sinks and collects at floor level rather than rising and dispersing. An open window above your head does nothing about that. Work outdoors or with the shop door fully raised, and get air moving low in the space. Unplug chargers, heaters, and power tools, shut off any pilot flame in the building, and keep an extinguisher beside the machine instead of on a shelf across the shop.

Two Ways a Hose Dies

From the outside in, aging does the work. Fuel hose stays flexible thanks to plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those compounds gradually migrate out, a process the V-twin's heat cycles speed up considerably. What is left behind is stiff and glassy, and normal vibration then opens hairline cracks in it, nearly always where the line bends. Dry climates make it worse, since low humidity draws moisture from the hose wall and hardens it faster.

From the inside out, fuel chemistry is responsible. Ethanol-blended gasoline holds water in suspension and slowly breaks down the hose liner, softening it and leaving gum deposits behind. Long parked stretches with fuel sitting in the line give that reaction plenty of opportunity. Together these two processes explain the deceptive part of fuel hose failure: the outer surface can look fine while the interior sheds material toward the injectors.

Catching It Early

Watch for these before a hose leaves you walking:

  • A puddle or damp patch beneath the frame or on the skid plate after the quad has been parked
  • A gasoline smell that hangs around the tank, usually strongest just after shutdown while pressure is still trapped in the line
  • Surface checking, a chalky cast, or a section that has gone rigid and no longer springs back
  • The engine bogging under load, breaking up at higher rpm, or acting like it is running out of fuel
  • Dirt caked in a ring at a fitting, which is dried residue from a slow weep

Trust your nose. On a pressurized system a pinhole leak often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a persistent odor without a visible puddle is a real symptom.

Killing the Pressure and Opening the Fittings

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a second or two until it stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. That sequence removes the pressure and makes sure the pump cannot energize while your hands are in the way. Remove the seat and side plastics, then follow the hose from the tank outlet to the throttle body, noting every retaining clip. Slide the pan into position and drape a rag over the first fitting you separate, since residual fuel remains even in a depressurized hose.

Back all clamps well away from the barbs first. Spring clips squeeze open with pliers; worm-gear clamps just loosen and slide. A quick-connect coupler releases when you depress its tabs squarely and pull straight off — never at an angle, because those plastic collars grow brittle with age and split. Break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist. Where a hose has bonded itself in place, slit it lengthwise and peel it off. Because the Renegade is a selectable 4x4, the line passes front differential hardware and extra frame bracing that a two-wheel-drive quad simply does not have, so photograph the routing before the old piece comes out.

Getting the New Line Seated Right

Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Extra hose sags into the frame or against front drive components and wears through, which is how a fresh install ends up leaking a season later. Push each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone belong nowhere near a fuel fitting; a lubricated sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a direct route past the clamp. If a hose end resists, dip it in hot water for a few seconds to soften the rubber.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without biting into the rubber. Where the machine uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until you feel and hear the collar click, then pull firmly to confirm engagement, and leave that joint clamp-free. Return the hose to its factory clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and away from anything that rotates.

No Leaks, No Excuses

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. The pump runs briefly each time, pressurizing the circuit so you can inspect both joints while the area is still dry and easy to read. Wipe each fitting with a clean rag and look for a bead forming. Then start the V-twin and inspect again at idle, following the entire run with a light while the system is hot and vibrating. Give it several minutes plus a short low-speed lap before the bodywork returns.

One structural detail to file away: the fuel filter on the injected Renegade is built into the in-tank pump module rather than sitting inline where you could service it from the hose. Replacing the line addresses hose problems only, so if the 2017 machine still runs starved after a careful installation, that in-tank assembly is where to continue looking.
