Inspecting the Line You Already Have
Start with a proper look rather than a parts order. Pull the seats and the side plastics on your 2017 Outlander MAX 850 XT, get a light in there, and work along the entire hose run with the engine cold. You are checking three things: how the rubber feels, how it looks, and what the fittings tell you.
- Squeeze the hose in several places. Healthy line gives and springs back; a section that feels rigid and glassy has hardened and is on borrowed time
- Look for fine checking, spider cracks, or a chalky bleached cast on the surface, especially where the hose passes near heat
- Inspect each fitting for a ring of caked dust, which is the residue trail fuel leaves when it seeps and evaporates over and over
- Note any damp shadow on the skid plate or a small puddle on the floor after the quad has been parked with a full tank

Why This Model Needs Pressure Relief First
The 850 XT is fuel-injected, and that reshapes the approach. Fuel is not gravity fed through a valve on this machine; an electric pump inside the tank pressurizes a hose that delivers fuel to the rail on the Rotax V-twin. There is no petcock anywhere on the chassis, so line-clamping pliers become your shutoff and the pump fuse becomes your first tool.
Access is shaped by the platform as well. This is a 4x4 machine with a front differential and prop shaft filling the front of the frame, and the MAX chassis is lengthened for the rear passenger seat, so the hose threads past more clips and clearance points than a short two-wheel-drive quad. Take the time to map it.
The Reasons Hose Goes Bad
Rubber fuel line fails by chemistry, not by friction. Over years in service the plasticizers that keep the material supple migrate out, and heat cycling from the big twin hurries that along. A hose that started soft turns firm and then brittle, and a brittle wall cracks under the same frame flex it used to absorb without complaint. In dry, low-humidity country the process runs noticeably faster because the surrounding air draws moisture out of the rubber and hardens it from the outside in.
Ethanol-blended gasoline works the inner surface. Its alcohol content pulls water into the fuel and gradually attacks the liner, and the damage compounds whenever the machine sits through a long off-season with old fuel standing in the system. The practical result is a hose that can look fine externally while shedding material internally toward the injectors and the pump screen.
Parts, Tools, and Gasoline Discipline
Assemble all of this before the first connection comes loose:
- Fuel-injection rated hose in the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- Fresh clamps matched to the fittings on your machine, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if locking couplers are present
- Line-clamping pliers to stand in for the shutoff valve this model lacks
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- An approved sealed fuel container and a shallow drain pan
- Socket set, plastic trim tools, a sharp razor knife, and plenty of clean rags
Ventilation deserves real attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles and travels along the floor where ignition sources tend to sit. Roll the machine outdoors if you can, or open the door all the way and put a fan at ground level moving air out. Shut off pilot lights, unplug chargers, and keep grinders and open flame out of the space. Gasoline strips skin oils quickly, so wash off any splash rather than letting a wet sleeve rest against your arm.
Removing the Old Hose Cleanly
Relieve the pressure to begin: pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. With the circuit dead, slide your catch pan under the work area and lay a rag over the first joint before you open it, because a bled line still holds residual fuel.
Move clamps well back along the hose before twisting anything apart. On a quick-connect coupler, press both tabs evenly and pull straight off the nipple — leverage applied at an angle cracks collars that have weathered several seasons. If the hose has varnished onto a barb, twist it gently to break the bond, or run a razor lengthwise and peel it away, which puts zero stress on the fitting. Before the line is fully out, photograph its complete path and every clip so reassembly is not guesswork.
Installing the New Line and Proving It Seals
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Extra hose does not add safety margin; it adds a chafe point against a frame tube or a drift toward hot exhaust. Work each end onto its barb dry until it bottoms out fully. Keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely away from the fittings, because any lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path to creep out. A brief dip in hot water is the right way to soften an end that resists.
Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without deforming the hose. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, no clamp belongs there at all – push until the collar clicks and then pull hard to confirm the latch engaged. Return the hose to every original clip and guide so it stays clear of the front driveline and heat.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and brings the hose to working pressure, giving you a dry system under real load to inspect. Wipe both joints with a clean rag and watch for beading or a fresh film. If they stay dry, start the engine and inspect again at idle, run it several minutes, then check once more before the plastics go back on. One last platform note: the injected 850 carries its fuel filter inside the tank with the pump module rather than inline on the visible hose, so a delivery complaint that outlives a clean install points there rather than back at the line you just replaced.
