Catching it in the garage instead is largely a matter of knowing what a tired hose looks and smells like. On the 2017 Outlander 850 XT that inspection has a specific character, because this Rotax powered machine is fuel injected, carries no petcock under the tank, and keeps its supply hose under constant pump pressure whenever the key is on.

Catching a Failing Line Before It Leaves You Walking

Give the hose a genuine hands-on inspection rather than a glance. Squeeze it along its length. Healthy fuel hose feels springy and returns to shape; a hose near the end of its life feels dense and rigid, sometimes with a faint crunch as the hardened wall gives. Bend a section gently and watch for fine crazing that opens up under flex and closes again when you release it. Those hairline cracks are the beginning of a weeping joint.

Look for a dark, dust-caked halo where the hose meets a fitting. Fuel that seeps in tiny amounts evaporates and leaves behind a sticky residue that collects trail dirt, so the grime pattern tells you where fuel has been escaping long before a drop ever hits the floor. On an 850 that spends time in mud, hose the area clean first so you are reading fresh evidence.

Running Symptoms That Point at Fuel Delivery

  • A puddle or wet streak under the machine after it has sat, most often on the skid plate below the tank
  • A persistent fuel odor around the seat and console, strongest in the first minutes after shutdown
  • Hesitation or bogging when you load the engine hard, as if the twin is momentarily starved
  • A lean-running feel at sustained higher rpm, sometimes with popping on deceleration
  • Extended cranking on a cold start, a sign that pressure has bled off overnight through a bad joint

Keep in mind how much a fuel-injected quad differs from a carbureted one here. A carbureted machine leaks at low gravity-feed pressure and geneRally drips where you can see it, and its float bowl drain gives you a convenient place to check for fuel and debris. This Outlander has neither of those, so a small pressure-side leak may only reveal itself as a smell and a rough-running engine.

What Actually Breaks Down Inside the Hose

Two separate processes attack fuel hose, and they work in opposite directions. Heat cycling and simple age pull the plasticizers out of the rubber, which stiffens the wall until it can no longer flex with the frame. Dry desert and high-plains climates accelerate this considerably, since low ambient humidity draws residual moisture out of the material and hardens it from the outside in.

Meanwhile, ethanol-blended gasoline standing in the line over a long layup does the reverse. Alcohol pulls water vapor into the fuel and slowly degrades the inner liner, softening and swelling it while the exterior continues to harden. The result is a hose that looks acceptable, feels stiff, and is quietly shedding material toward the injectors. Age alone is a legitimate reason to replace a hose on a machine that has been in service since 2017.

Setting Up a Safe Work Area

Gasoline handling deserves real respect rather than a token warning. Work outdoors, or with the garage door wide open and a fan moving air across the floor. Fuel vapor is denser than air and pools low, which is exactly where most ignition sources live. Kill the shop heater, put away anything with an open element, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within arm's reach. Wear gloves, because gasoline crosses skin readily and carries additives with it.

Have all of this laid out before you break the first fitting:

  • Fuel-injection rated replacement line in the correct inside diameter, cut long and trimmed to fit
  • New clamps sized for the fitting style on your machine, or a quick-connect release tool if it uses locking collars
  • Line-clamping pliers, which substitute for the petcock this model does not have
  • An approved sealed container plus a drain pan, and more rags than you think you need
  • Sockets and a flat-blade screwdriver for the seat, console, and any tank strap hardware

Bleeding Down the System and Freeing the Old Hose

Relieve pressure first. Remove the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it dies, shut the key off, and disconnect the battery negative terminal. Take off the seat and the center panel to expose the tank, the pump flange, and the run of hose heading to the throttle body. Position the pan and drape a rag over the fitting you are about to open, since residual fuel will still find its way out.

Back the clamp well away from the joint before you twist anything. Quick-connect couplers release by squeezing the tabs evenly and pulling straight along the axis of the fitting; prying sideways cracks aged plastic. A hose that has bonded to its barb will usually break loose with a slow rotational twist, and if it refuses, split it with a razor and peel it off rather than fighting it. As the line comes out, note each retaining clip and every place it clears a frame member — the 4x4 driveline on this Outlander creates clearance points a two-wheel-drive chassis never has.

Installing the New Line Dry

Match the original length rather than guessing. A hose cut too long rubs a frame tube or drops into the path of moving hardware; one cut too short tugs at both connections every time the chassis flexes. Slide the new line fully onto each barb until it stops against the shoulder, and do it without any lubricant. Grease, assembly lube, and silicone all compromise the seal between hose and fitting under pressure. Warming the hose end in hot water is the correct way to make a stubborn piece slide on.

Locate each clamp just behind the bead on the fitting so it cannot walk off, and tighten to firm rather than deforming the hose. If a connection on your quad is a self-locking quick-connect, push it home until the collar clicks and confirm the latch with a solid tug; adding a clamp to that style of fitting accomplishes nothing. Seat the hose back into its factory guides so it stays away from the exhaust and the front differential area.

Pressure Testing Before You Load the Trailer

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking. The pump primes with each cycle and brings the line up to pressure, which is the ideal moment to inspect dry fittings for the first bead of fuel. Run a clean rag around both joints and check it for staining. Then start the engine and repeat the inspection at idle, and again after a short low-speed ride around the yard.

Finally, remember where the filtration lives on this platform. The fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline element you can reach on the visible hose, so a new line does nothing for a restricted filter. If the 850 still feels flat under load after a clean, leak-free installation, the pump module inside the tank is the logical next step.
