The fuel hose on a 2017 Outlander 850 has no wear indicator, throws no code, and gives no obvious sign of its condition from the saddle. It is simply a rubber component living in a hot engine bay and carrying a chemically aggressive liquid. Understanding what breaks it down is the most practical way to judge whether yours is still fit for hard use.
The Chemistry and Heat That End a Hose
Start with heat. The 854cc Rotax V-twin generates real warmth under the bodywork, and every heat cycle pulls more of the plasticizer content out of the hose wall. Rubber that was soft and elastic when the machine was new slowly becomes stiff and glassy, and once it can no longer absorb movement, the normal flex of a chassis working through rough terrain turns that stiffness into surface checks and eventually splits. Riders in dry, low-humidity country see this progress faster, since the surrounding air continually draws moisture out of the material.
Now the chemistry. Ethanol-blended gasoline attracts water and slowly degrades the hose liner from the bore side. That inner surface softens, swells slightly, and begins releasing fine particles into the fuel stream headed for the injectors. Long parked stretches multiply the effect, because standing fuel has time to gum and varnish against a wall already losing integrity. The classic result is a hose failing in two directions at once, hard and cracked outside while soft and shedding inside.
Confirming Injection on This Machine
Your 850 is fuel injected, which sets the rules for the whole job. The pump lives inside the fuel tank, the hose carrying fuel to the engine holds pressure long after the key is off, and there is no petcock anywhere to shut off flow. Relieving pressure replaces closing a valve. Tools, Supplies, and Working Safely With Gasoline

Ventilation is the real safety measure here. A few seconds in hot water softens a tight end enough to slide on. Place new clamps just behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten evenly instead of burying them in the rubber. Self-locking quick-connects get pushed until they click and then tugged hard to confirm the latch, with no clamp added. Feed the hose back through every original clip.
