That smell almost always traces back to a hose or a fitting rather than anything expensive. The 2016 Grizzly 700 4x4 EPS runs electronic fuel injection with the pump submerged in the tank, so the line you are about to replace stays pressurized whenever the key is on and there is no fuel valve to close first. Everything that follows is built around that.
Confirming What You Are Working With
Injection changes three practical things on this job. The circuit must be depressurized before a fitting is opened, the replacement hose has to be rated for pressure rather than gravity feed, and at least one end may use a locking coupler instead of a simple barb and clamp. Inspect both connections and count what you need before ordering anything, because a pressure line and a clamp that has already been overtightened once are not parts to improvise with.
Chassis configuration matters for access more than procedure. This is a four wheel drive machine with electric power steering, and the extra front differential and steering assist hardware crowds the area the hose passes through. The path is the same as on a two wheel drive quad, but your hands will have less room, so patience beats force at every fitting.
The Two Ways a Fuel Hose Dies
Externally, rubber loses the plasticizers that make it flexible. Years of heat radiating off the 686cc single, sunlight, and temperature swings leave a hose wall that has gone hard and glassy, and the flexing that comes with real trail use turns those hardened areas into cracks. Dry climates speed this up noticeably, since air with very little moisture in it draws the hose stiff from the outside surface inward.
Internally, ethanol blended fuel does the damage. Alcohol carries water into the system and slowly breaks down the hose liner, while fuel left standing for a season leaves gum and varnish behind as it evaporates unevenly. The result is restricted flow plus loose particles heading toward the injector. Because that decay is invisible, the age of the hose tells you more than a visual inspection does.
Recognizing a Line About to Let Go
Symptoms tend to arrive in this order:
- A gasoline odor around the seat and tank that lingers long after shutdown
- Fuel pooling on the skid plate or a fresh wet trail down a frame tube
- Cracked, chalky, or noticeably stiff hose, particularly where it curves
- A soft or swollen spot right at a fitting, which signals liner failure
- Bogging on acceleration, a lean stumble at higher rpm, or behavior that mimics a low tank
Because this Grizzly runs a pressurized line, small leaks often mist and evaporate rather than dripping. A strong smell with nothing on the floor is still a leak. Turn the key on so the pump runs, then work along the hose with a light and a clean rag until you find the wet spot.
Gear, Ventilation, and Basic Fuel Sense
Set everything out before you begin:
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed container approved for gasoline
- Injection rated hose in the factory inside diameter
- New clamps of the correct type, plus a release tool if your coupler requires one
- Line clamping pliers, which substitute for the petcock this machine does not have
- A razor blade, rags, and sockets for the seat and body panels
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles right at floor level where you will be working, so this is genuinely a job for open air or a wide open garage door with a fan moving air across the ground. Turn off anything with a pilot light nearby, skip the hot work light, and disconnect the battery negative before opening a fitting. Keep the container capped except when you are actively pouring into it.
Taking the Old Hose Out
Relieve pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse from the block beneath the seat, then attempt to start the engine so it consumes whatever remains in the line. Key off, battery disconnected. Remove the seat and center plastics, locate the tank outlet, and follow the hose forward toward the throttle body, photographing every clip and clearance point along the way.
Ease each clamp well back along the hose before you disturb the joint. If the rubber has glued itself to the barb, cut it rather than fight it, slitting the hose lengthwise with a razor and peeling it off in one piece. Plastic fittings that have been through several winters snap under side load, so a quick connect gets its tabs squeezed evenly and comes off straight back. Once the hose is loose, confirm your notes on how it threaded past the front driveline bracing, because getting the replacement back through the same gap is the fiddliest part of the whole job.
Installing and Proving the Repair
Cut the new hose to the same length as the original, no longer. Extra slack ends up rubbing a frame tube or drifting toward exhaust heat. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and install it dry. Grease and oil on a fuel fitting break the seal on a pressurized line and can wash downstream into the injection system, so keep the surfaces clean. Softening a stiff hose end in hot water for half a minute makes it slide on without prying.
Place new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly. If the tank end uses a self locking quick connect, push until the collar clicks and then pull firmly to confirm it has latched, since that design needs no clamp. Route the hose through every original clip so it sits clear of moving and hot components.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle pressurizes the line and lets you check both joints while everything is dry. Then start the engine, let it idle, and inspect again with a clean rag before the bodywork goes back on. One closing note specific to this platform: the fuel filter is inside the tank as part of the pump module, not inline on the hose, so persistent starvation after a clean install points to that assembly rather than the line you just replaced.
