Most riders discover a tired fuel line the hard way, standing over a warm engine that suddenly wants to stumble at half throttle. On the 2016 KingQuad 750AXi, that symptom deserves attention quickly, because the AXi badge tells you this machine runs electronic fuel injection rather than a carburetor. There is no petcock under the tank to twist closed, the hose you are inspecting is part of a pressurized circuit fed by a pump living inside the tank, and the whole job needs a different order of operations than an older carbureted quad.

Catching a Failing Line Before It Strands You

The 722cc single asks a lot of its fuel supply, and a hose that has gone hard will show its hand in small ways first. Keep an eye out for the following:

  • Damp residue or an outright puddle on the skid plate after the machine has sat overnight
  • Raw gasoline odor around the seat area, usually strongest in the minutes right after shutdown while pressure is still trapped in the line
  • Hairline surface cracking, a chalky gray cast, or a section that feels brittle instead of springy when you pinch it
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble climbing a hill, or hesitation that mimics a machine running out of gas at three quarters of a tank
  • A dust-caked ring at either fitting, which is the telltale of fuel weeping and evaporating over weeks

Injected machines hide leaks better than carbureted ones. Fuel escaping a pressurized joint often atomizes and disappears before it ever forms a drop, so your nose frequently beats your eyes to the diagnosis on this model.

What Actually Wears Out the Hose

Fuel hose fails from both sides at once. The outside surrenders its plasticizers over years of heat cycling next to a hard-working single, and once those additives are gone the rubber stiffens until it can no longer flex with the frame. Riders in dry, low-humidity country watch this happen faster, since arid air continually draws moisture out of the hose wall and leaves it glassy and prone to splitting at the bends.

Ethanol-blended pump gas works the inner liner. Alcohol pulls water vapor into the fuel and slowly softens the hose from the bore outward, and a KingQuad parked for a season with E10 sitting in the plumbing can end up with a line that is hardened outside and gummy inside. That combination sheds fine debris toward the injector, which is one reason a hose that still looks acceptable on a ten-year-old machine is worth replacing on age alone.

Assembling Tools and Setting Up a Safe Workspace

Lay everything out before a single fitting comes loose:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils in seconds
  • An approved metal or fuel-rated plastic container for whatever you capture
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the correct inside diameter — ordinary low-pressure carburetor hose will not survive here
  • Fresh clamps matched to the original style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if your 750AXi carries a locking coupler at the pump flange
  • Line-clamping pliers for pinching off any low-pressure or vent section, because no fuel valve exists on this machine
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat, fender panels, and pump plate hardware, plus a stack of clean rags

Do this work outdoors or with the garage wide open at floor level. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles low, so a cracked window well above the machine does nothing. No pilot lights, no grinders, no trouble lights with exposed bulbs anywhere nearby.

Relieving Pressure and Extracting the Old Hose

Start by killing fuel pressure rather than cutting into it. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a couple of seconds until it dies, then switch the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and whatever fender plastic blocks your view of the tank top and the hose run heading toward the throttle body.

Slide a catch pan underneath and drape a rag over the first joint you open. Even a depressurized line holds enough fuel to run down your wrist. Worm-gear or spring clamps should be walked well back along the hose before you disturb the connection. A quick-connect coupler needs its tabs squeezed squarely and the fitting pulled straight off, never levered sideways, since those plastic collars grow brittle and snap after a decade of heat.

Twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond on the barb instead of hauling on it. If it refuses to budge, slit it lengthwise with a fresh razor and peel it off, protecting the metal fitting. As it comes free, note every routing clip. This is a 4x4 chassis, so the line tracks past front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers that a two-wheel-drive layout does not carry, and power steering hardware crowds the front of the frame further. Photograph the run before it is fully out.

Installing the New Line the Right Way

Cut the replacement to the same length as the original and resist adding slack. Excess hose chafes on frame tubes or drifts toward hot exhaust. Push the new line onto each barb dry until it seats past the raised bead, and keep grease, oil, and silicone spray away from the sealing surfaces entirely — lubricant gives pressurized fuel a path to creep out under the clamp. If the hose is stiff, dip the end in hot water for a few seconds and it will slide on without help.

Set new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly rather than crushing one side. Where the 750AXi uses a self-locking quick-connect at the pump, push until you hear the collar click and then tug firmly to confirm it has latched; that style needs no clamp at all. Return the hose to its original clips and guides so it stays clear of the front driveline, steering components, and header.

Pressure Testing Before the First Ride

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle primes the pump and loads the line with pressure while you watch. Run a dry finger and a clean rag around both connections looking for the faintest seepage, then fire the engine and inspect again at idle with the plastics still off. Give it several minutes of leak-free running before anything gets bolted back down.

One last note specific to the injected KingQuad: its fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump module rather than sitting inline where you can reach it. New hose will not cure a restricted filter, so if the 750AXi still feels starved at high rpm after a clean install, the pump assembly inside the tank is the next place to look.
