Rubber is a consumable. Riders think of tires, belts, and brake pads that way without hesitation, then forget that the hose carrying gasoline to the engine is made of the same perishable material. On a 2016 KingQuad 750AXi that has seen a decade of seasons, the fuel line has earned a hard look.
What Time Does to Fuel Line
The compounds that make rubber flexible are not permanently bound in the material. They migrate out slowly, and heat drives the process. Every time this 722cc single warms to operating temperature and cools back down, a little more flexibility leaves the hose. Eventually the wall goes stiff and faintly glassy, and a stiff hose cannot follow the vibration and chassis movement of a quad working through rough terrain. Cracks start where the hose bends and spread outward from there.
Storage climate has an outsized effect. Arid regions with low humidity pull residual moisture from the rubber and harden it years ahead of schedule compared to a machine kept in damp coastal air. Ethanol works the opposite direction, from the inside out. E10 pump gas draws atmospheric water into itself, and when a KingQuad sits idle for months, that alcohol and water mixture degrades the inner liner while the outer surface continues to stiffen. The hose ends up soft inside, brittle outside, and shedding fine debris toward the injector.
Spotting a Line About to Give Up
- A gasoline smell hanging around the seat and tank, most noticeable in the first minutes after shutdown
- Damp staining or a small puddle under the frame after the machine has been parked overnight
- Visible fine cracking, a chalky bloom on the surface, or a section that stays rigid when you pinch it
- Bogging under load, a stumble on hard acceleration, or the engine behaving as though it is low on fuel with a half tank showing
- A ring of dust clinging to a damp spot at a fitting, which marks a weep that has been evaporating steadily
Since this KingQuad runs a pressurized injection circuit rather than a gravity feed, a small breach tends to spray a fine mist that evaporates before it forms a drop. A persistent fuel odor with a dry floor underneath is still a genuine leak.
Injection Realities on the AXi Platform
The AXi designation confirms electronic fuel injection, and it changes the shape of this repair in three ways. There is no petcock beneath the tank, so nothing to close before you open a fitting. An electric pump submerged in the tank holds the supply hose at regulated pressure, and residual pressure remains after the engine stops. And the fuel filter is integrated into that in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting on the hose where you can reach it.
The first two points mean you will relieve pressure electrically and use clamping pliers where an older machine would let you flip a lever. The third matters for diagnosis. If the quad still starves for fuel after a clean hose replacement, the in-tank filter element is the logical next suspect, not the new line.
Tools, Parts, and Handling Gasoline Properly
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A shallow drain pan plus a sealed, fuel-rated container for what comes out
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the factory inside diameter
- Correct-style clamps, and a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is fitted at the tank
- Line-clamping pliers, required on any model without a fuel valve
- Metric sockets, a small flat driver, a razor knife, clean rags, and a work light
Ventilation deserves real attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, where it can drift across a shop and find an ignition source you forgot about. Work outdoors or immediately inside a fully open door. Extinguish water heater pilots, unplug trickle chargers, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within reach. Never leave drained fuel sitting in an open pan.
Taking the Old Hose Off
Kill the pressure before touching a fitting. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stumbles and quits on whatever fuel remains in the rail, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. The circuit is now inert and the pump cannot come to life mid job.
Lift the seat and remove the front fender and side panels that block access to the tank outlet and the hose run heading back to the throttle body. Slide the pan into position and drape a rag over the first connection you plan to open. Even a depressurized hose holds enough fuel to make a mess when it separates.
Move any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. On a quick-connect, compress both tabs evenly and pull straight off in line with the fitting; angling it cracks plastic collars that have grown brittle. Rotate a stuck hose end gently on its barb to break the varnish bond instead of hauling on it. If it will not release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away, which protects the fitting underneath.
Record the routing before the old line is fully out. Four-wheel-drive on this KingQuad brings a front differential and extra frame structure, so the hose takes a path with more clearance points than a two-wheel-drive chassis needs. Photograph each clip and guide.
Installing the New Line and Proving It Dry
Match the replacement to the original length. Extra hose is not a safety margin; it is something that will chafe on a frame tube or sag toward hot exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting give pressurized gasoline a route out from under the clamp, so keep all of it away. Dipping the hose end in hot water for half a minute softens it enough to slide on without help.
Set fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, firm without biting into the rubber. Where the tank uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until it clicks and then pull hard to confirm the latch caught. That fitting takes no clamp. Reinstall the hose into every original retainer so it holds position away from the front driveline and the engine's hot surfaces.
Finish with a real pressure test. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off five or six times without cranking. Each cycle brings the line to pressure while everything around it is still clean and dry, which makes any seepage obvious. Wipe the joints and check them by touch as well as sight. Start the 2016 KingQuad 750AXi, let it idle, blip the throttle, and inspect a third time before the plastics go back on. Ride a slow lap of the yard, then check both connections once more.
