Choosing the Right Hose Matters More Than the Wrenching
The actual labor on this job is modest. Getting the part right is where owners go wrong. The 2016 KingQuad 400FSi is fuel injected, so the hose you are replacing carries fuel under pump pressure rather than trickling down from a gravity tank. Generic low pressure hose intended for carbureted machines will feel correct in your hands and then swell, soften, or push off a barb once real pressure is behind it. Buy hose rated for fuel-injection service and match the original inside diameter exactly, because a hose one size too large will never seal properly no matter how hard you crank the clamp.
Clamp selection follows the same logic. Use the style that belongs on the fitting you find, whether that is a worm gear band or a spring clip, and install new ones rather than reusing pieces that have already taken a set. If a connection turns out to be a self-locking quick-connect coupler, it needs no clamp at all and adding one only risks distorting the collar.
Confirming the Setup on This Machine
Look for a petcock under the tank on this quad and you will not find one. Injected KingQuad 400 models do not use a fuel valve, since a pump inside the tank does the work of moving fuel to the throttle body. That pressurized hose holds pressure well after shutdown, so relieving it is the mandatory first step of the procedure and line clamping pliers become your substitute shutoff for any low pressure section.
The FSi runs a five speed semi-automatic gearbox with 4x4 drive, and the drive configuration touches routing rather than method. Front differential hardware, a driveshaft, and additional frame bracing all sit near the hose path, so the factory clips exist specifically to keep the line away from exhaust heat and turning components. Two-wheel-drive layouts give that hose a cleaner shot. Photograph every clip before disturbing the old line.
Why the Old Hose Wore Out
Fuel hose degrades with time, not with hours. Plasticizers in the rubber keep it flexible, and they steadily migrate out of the hose wall until the material behaves like brittle plastic and cracks where it once bent. Engine heat cycles accelerate the process, and the vibration and frame flex a utility quad soaks up on rough ground drive small cracks into leak paths.
Environment decides how fast that clock runs. Arid, low humidity conditions pull moisture out of the hose and stiffen it from the outer surface inward, so a machine kept in dry country can need hose several seasons earlier than one in a humid region. Ethanol blended pump gas attacks the inner liner in the opposite direction, drawing in water and degrading the rubber whenever fuel sits still in the line. A hose exposed to both can look reasonable outside while shedding material toward the injector.
Warning Signs Before Failure
- Fuel odor that lingers around the machine, sharpest right after shutdown while pressure remains
- A drip, damp streak, or stain on the skid plate or the floor under the frame
- Cracks opening on the surface when you flex the hose, or a hard, chalky feel when you pinch it
- Grime stuck to a wet ring at a fitting, evidence of a slow weep
- Bogging under throttle, hesitation off idle, or lean surging as though the tank were low
- A hose end that has swelled or gone gummy where it slides onto the barb
Since the supply side is pressurized, a small leak can atomize and evaporate before it drips, meaning a strong smell over clean concrete still warrants a close look.
Setting Up Safely and Removing the Line
Gather gloves, eye protection, a sealed approved fuel container, a shallow catch pan, a socket set, a small flat blade screwdriver, a razor knife, and a stack of rags alongside your new hose and clamps. Then address the fumes honestly. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it collects along the floor and travels toward water heater pilots, shop heaters, and charger contacts. Work outdoors or with the door fully open, get airflow moving at ground level, and shut off every ignition source. Keep an extinguisher within reach and cap the container between pours.
Relieve pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse or relay, cranking the engine until it stalls, switching the key off, and disconnecting the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and any bodywork covering the tank outlet and the hose run to the throttle body. Slide the pan underneath, drape a rag over the first joint because residual fuel remains, and move worm gear or spring clamps well back before breaking the connection. On a locking quick-connect, depress both tabs evenly and pull straight off with no sideways force, since aged plastic collars split when levered. Twist a stuck hose lightly to break the varnish bond, and if it holds fast, slit it lengthwise and peel it away instead of scarring the fitting.
Making the Connections
Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you took off. Extra hose chafes on a frame tube or fouls at full steering lock, and a short piece pulls at its fittings. Push each end all the way onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and assemble dry from start to finish. Grease, oil, silicone, and sealant have no place on a fuel connection, because a lubricated sealing face is exactly the path pressurized fuel needs to escape past a clamp. Soften a tight hose end in hot water if it fights you.
Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to firm, without biting into the rubber. A self-locking quick-connect is complete when it clicks and holds against a firm pull. Route the hose back through every original clip and verify clearance from the exhaust and front driveline before reinstalling bodywork.
Leak Check and Wrap Up
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you find a weep while the joints are still dry. Wipe each connection with a clean pale rag so any trace shows, then start the engine, inspect at idle, and check again after several minutes of running and a slow lap of the yard.
Bear one thing in mind before you call it finished. On the injected KingQuad 400FSi the fuel filter is built into the in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline on the hose, so new line will not cure a restricted filter. If the machine still behaves fuel starved after a dry and secure installation, that assembly is the next thing to examine.
