Fuel Line Service for the 2016 Kymco MXU 150X

Small-displacement quads reward owners who do their own work, and the MXU 150X is about as approachable as fuel system repairs get. The 2016 MXU 150X is carbureted, feeding a single-cylinder engine through a short, gravity-fed rubber line running from the tank down to the carburetor inlet. There is no fuel pump to depressurize and no injector plumbing to worry about, so the entire repair comes down to stopping the flow, catching what drains, and getting a fresh hose seated properly on two barbs.
Understanding the Plumbing on This Machine
Fuel leaves the tank through a shutoff at the bottom, passes through a small inline filter, and arrives at the carburetor. Some carbureted machines in this class use a lever-style petcock you turn by hand, while others use a vacuum-operated valve that opens only when the engine is running. Look at your tank fitting before you begin. If there is a lever, close it. If there is a small vacuum hose running to the valve and no lever to move, use line-clamping pliers to pinch the fuel hose shut instead, since you have no manual shutoff to rely on.
The MXU 150X is a two-wheel-drive quad, which works in your favor here. Without front differential hardware crowding the frame, the fuel line takes a direct route and both ends are reachable once the seat and a small amount of plastic come off. Machines with four-wheel-drive layouts push that hose around additional structure, and this one does not.
Why Rubber Fuel Line Does Not Last Forever
A fuel hose fails from two directions at once. Externally, the plasticizers that keep rubber soft gradually migrate out and evaporate. What began as a flexible hose becomes hard and glassy, and once that happens, ordinary engine vibration and chassis flex begin cracking the surface. Heat cycling from the engine sitting close by accelerates the process, and dry climates accelerate it further by pulling moisture out of the hose wall.
Internally, ethanol-blended gasoline goes to work on the liner. E10 pulls water vapor out of the air, and the resulting mixture slowly breaks down the inner surface, which swells and sheds fine material downstream toward the carburetor. Leave that fuel standing in the line through a long stretch of non-use and gum and varnish build on top of the damage, gluing the hose to its fittings and narrowing the flow path. None of this reflects a flaw in the machine. It is simply the arithmetic of rubber, heat, and modern pump gas.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- A small puddle or damp patch of gasoline under the quad after it has sat
- A noticeable fuel smell around the tank, often the very first clue in an enclosed garage
- Visible cracking, a chalky surface, or a section that feels stiff and keeps a crease when pinched
- Fuel-stained dust collected in a ring at either fitting, which indicates slow seepage
- Bogging under throttle, hesitation as revs climb, or an engine acting like it is low on fuel with plenty in the tank
On a 149cc engine, a partial restriction is easy to overlook. Idle demand is tiny, so a hose that has swollen shut internally still lets the machine run smoothly in the driveway and only reveals itself when you ask for sustained throttle up a hill.
Tools, Supplies, and Gasoline Safety
Get all of this out before you disturb anything:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- An approved container for the fuel you drain
- New hose matched to the original inside diameter and rated for continuous gasoline contact
- Correctly sized clamps, or a small assorted clamp kit
- Line-clamping pliers if your tank uses a vacuum valve rather than a manual lever
- Screwdrivers, pliers, a socket set, a razor knife, clear tubing for the float bowl drain, and rags
Take the ventilation seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles on the floor and drifts along it toward any ignition source in the room. An open window at head height does almost nothing; an open garage door with a fan moving air near ground level does a great deal. Shut off appliances with standing pilot lights, keep chargers and hot work lamps far from the work area, and let fuel-soaked rags dry outdoors rather than sealing them in a can.
Disconnecting the Original Hose
Shut off the fuel at the valve or clamp the hose closed, then disconnect the battery negative terminal. Lift the seat and remove enough bodywork to see the whole hose run at once. Take a photo of the routing and note which clips retain it and where it passes near the frame, because reassembly is far easier when you are not guessing.
Drain the fuel sitting downstream through the carburetor float bowl. Slip a length of clear tubing onto the drain nipple, direct it into your container, and back out the drain screw until the bowl is dry. That single step removes most of the potential mess. Then slide a pan under the tank connection, drape a rag over the fitting, and back both clamps well away from the joints before you disturb them.
Aged rubber bonds to metal with dried fuel residue. Twist the hose gently to break that seal instead of pulling straight and hard on it. If a section refuses to move, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off the barb rather than risking a bent petcock spigot or a cracked carburetor inlet.
Installing the Replacement Correctly
Cut the new hose to the same length as the piece you removed. Extra length lets the line sag against a frame tube and wear through, while a short piece pulls at both fittings each time the engine moves. Slide each end onto its barb dry, pushing until it seats fully past the raised bead. Keep grease, oil, and silicone spray away from the fittings entirely, since anything slick on the sealing face creates a path for fuel to weep out from under the hose no matter how tight the clamp. Hot water on a stubborn hose end solves the same problem cleanly.
Position each clamp just behind the barb bead and tighten it evenly until the hose stops turning by hand, without cutting into the wall. Clip the line back into its original guides, keep it clear of exhaust heat and steering components, and close the float bowl drain screw.
Checking for Leaks Before the First Ride
Reconnect the battery and restore fuel flow by opening the valve or releasing the clamping pliers, then wait a full minute or two while gravity fills the line and the float bowl. A static system under a head of fuel is the best possible test bed for spotting a slow seep. Wipe both joints, check them with a dry fingertip, and look for spotting on a rag placed underneath.
Start the engine and inspect once more while it idles and vibrates, then rev it a few times and take a short lap before shutting down for a final look. One benefit of this carbureted layout: the fuel filter is an inline piece you can see and replace, not a cartridge buried inside the tank alongside a pump the way injected machines arrange it. With the system already drained, refreshing that filter now costs a couple of minutes and leaves the whole delivery path new.
