There is a particular satisfaction in fixing a fuel leak yourself, and on a 2016 Brute Force 300 the job is short enough that most riders finish it in a single sitting. This machine's fuel path is simple and entirely accessible, so the work comes down to preparation, patience with the old hose, and a careful leak check at the end.

Set Up the Work Area Before You Touch Anything

Gasoline is the one part of this job that deserves genuine caution. Its vapor is heavier than air, which means it drifts down and collects at floor level rather than wafting out an open window. That is exactly where a water heater pilot light, a shop heater, or a dropped extension cord can find it. Roll the quad outside if you can, or open the overhead door completely and keep an extinguisher within reach. No grinding, welding, or smoking anywhere in the vicinity, and spilled fuel should be spread out to evaporate in open air rather than wiped up into a pile of rags left in a closed bin.

With ventilation handled, collect your supplies:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection
  • An approved fuel container and a low, wide catch pan
  • Replacement hose in the correct inside diameter, bought a little long so you can trim it
  • New clamps or a small clamp assortment, since aged clamps have lost their grip
  • A stub of clear tubing for the carburetor float bowl drain
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, a few sockets, and clean rags

The Layout You Are Working With

The Brute Force 300 runs a carburetor, which keeps everything straightforward. A petcock mounted at the tank shuts the fuel supply off completely, and from there gravity carries fuel down a short hose to the carburetor inlet. Nothing in this system holds pressure, so there is no pump to bleed down, no fuse or relay to remove, and no self-locking coupler requiring a release tool. Both connections are ordinary barbed spigots secured with clamps.

The carburetor's float bowl drain screw is your friend here. Slip clear tubing over it, aim it into your container, and open the screw to empty the bowl before you disturb the hose. This being a 2x4 chassis, no front differential or additional driveline hardware sits in the way, so the hose run is direct and easy to reach compared with the same repair on a four-wheel-drive utility quad.

Getting the Old Hose Off Cleanly

Close the petcock, then remove the seat and any panel obstructing your view of the tank outlet and carburetor inlet. Drain the float bowl through your clear tube and reseat the drain screw. Slide the catch pan under the work area and drape a rag over whichever fitting you plan to open first, because the hose retains fuel even after the valve is shut.

Loosen each clamp and walk it well back along the hose so it is out of your way. Old hose tends to varnish itself onto a barb, so rotate it on the fitting to break that bond rather than hauling on it — a hard pull loads the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet in ways they do not appreciate. If a hose refuses to budge, slice it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away in halves. Before the old piece is fully out, note its exact routing and every clip it passes through.

Fitting the Replacement

Trim the new hose to the same length as the original. A piece that is too long can rub a frame tube or fold into a kink that restricts flow, while one that is too short holds constant tension on both fittings. Push each end all the way onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no business on a fuel fitting; lubricant on the sealing surface creates a weep path and lets the hose creep off the barb over time. A stubborn end softens in a few seconds of hot water.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly. Snug is correct; crushing the hose wall is not, since a clamp biting into rubber creates the very leak you set out to fix. Route the hose back through its original clip so it stays clear of hot surfaces and moving parts.

Proving the Repair

Open the petcock and give it a minute to fill the line and refill the float bowl. Wipe both connections with a dry rag and inspect them under bright light, watching for the smallest bead forming at either barb. Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes, then check both ends again while the machine is warm and vibrating. Only when everything stays completely dry should the plastics and seat go back on.

Understanding Why It Failed in the First Place

Fuel hose ages from two directions at once. On the outside, the plasticizers that keep rubber flexible slowly migrate out of the compound, and heat from the air-cooled 271cc single speeds that along. Once the hose stiffens, vibration cracks it at the bends and under the clamps. Dry, arid climates make this happen sooner by pulling moisture out of the hose wall and leaving the surface chalky and hard.

From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas attacks the liner. The alcohol content holds moisture against the rubber and gradually breaks it down, shedding fine material toward the carburetor. Stagnant fuel is far harder on a hose than fuel in motion, so a Brute Force 300 that spends long stretches parked with a partial tank tends to wear out plumbing ahead of one ridden regularly.

Catching the Next One Early

Now that you know what a fresh line feels like, keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Fuel staining or a small puddle beneath the left side of the machine after it sits overnight
  • A gasoline odor around the front bodywork that never quite goes away
  • Hairline cracks that open when you flex the hose, or a hard, glassy texture
  • A soft, swollen section that indicates internal breakdown
  • Bogging under throttle, a lean stumble, or the engine acting starved with fuel still in the tank
  • A crusted ring of dust at a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried repeatedly
