What Makes This KingQuad Different Under the Seat
Riders coming off older quads sometimes reach under the tank of a 2015 KingQuad 400FSi looking for a petcock and come up empty. There is not one, and that is by design. The FSi is the fuel-injected version of the KingQuad 400, running the five speed semi-automatic gearbox and 4x4 drive, and injected machines do not gravity feed a carburetor. A pump inside the tank pressurizes the hose that runs to the throttle body, and that hose keeps a meaningful amount of pressure after the key is turned off.
Two consequences follow. Pressure must be relieved deliberately before you open a fitting, and your shutoff device is a pair of line clamping pliers rather than a valve lever. Neither is difficult. Both are non-negotiable if you want the fuel to end up in a pan instead of on your forearms.
Tools and Parts to Collect
- Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection, since a fitting under pressure can spit as it releases
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter
- New clamps in the correct style, or a small clamp assortment kit
- Line clamping pliers, and a quick-connect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
- A sealed approved container for drained fuel and a shallow catch pan
- Socket set, small flat blade screwdriver, razor knife, and plenty of clean rags
Ventilation deserves a paragraph of its own, not a footnote. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks to the floor and spreads outward at exactly the height of water heater pilots, propane heaters, and battery charger contacts. Do this job outdoors, or with the overhead door fully open and air moving low in the space. Shut off anything holding a flame or capable of a spark, keep an extinguisher within reach, cap the fuel container between pours, and take a break outside if the fumes get strong.
How Fuel Hose Ends Up Failing
The rubber relies on plasticizers to stay flexible, and those compounds gradually leave the hose wall as the years pass. Once enough are gone, the hose stops flexing and starts cracking. Heat cycles from the engine hurry that along, and the vibration and chassis flex a working 4x4 endures over ruts and washouts turn microscopic cracks into genuine leak paths.
Storage conditions and fuel chemistry set the schedule. Dry, low humidity air pulls moisture out of the rubber and hardens it from the outer surface inward, which is why machines in arid regions need hose sooner than the calendar implies. Ethanol blended pump gas attacks the inner liner instead, drawing in water and degrading the rubber whenever fuel sits unused in the line. The end result is a hose that may look fine on the outside while shedding material toward the injector from within.
Symptoms to Take Seriously
Start with your nose. A gasoline smell that hangs around the machine, strongest in the first few minutes after shutdown while the system still holds pressure, is the earliest reliable indicator. Follow it with your eyes: look for a drip trail, a damp streak, or dirt caked into a wet ring at either fitting, which is the classic signature of a slow weep. Then use your hands, flexing the hose to see whether fine cracks open on the surface and pinching it to judge whether it is still supple or has gone hard and glassy.
Driveability rounds out the picture. Bogging under load, hesitation coming off idle, and lean surging that feels like a nearly empty tank all point toward restricted or leaking supply. Because this system runs under pressure, a small leak often atomizes and evaporates before it ever drips, so do not dismiss a strong odor just because the floor is clean.
Removing the Old Line
Begin by bleeding pressure. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stalls, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Take the seat off and remove whatever bodywork blocks the tank outlet and the hose run heading toward the throttle body.
Set the catch pan in position and cover the first joint with a rag, because residual fuel remains in the line even after pressure is relieved. Push worm gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before breaking the connection. Where a locking quick-connect is used, squeeze the release tabs squarely and pull straight off rather than prying sideways, since a plastic collar this old cracks readily. Twist a bonded hose gently to break the varnish at the barb, and if it stays put, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off. Note routing carefully as it comes free, because the 4x4 layout puts front differential hardware and extra frame structure in the hose path and every clip along the way keeps the line clear of heat and motion.
Installation and Final Verification
Cut the new hose to the exact length of the old one. Surplus length becomes a chafe point on a frame tube or an interference at full steering lock, while a short piece pulls at its fittings. Slide each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, working dry throughout. Nothing lubricating belongs on a fuel connection, because grease, oil, or silicone on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route out from under the clamp. A quick dip in hot water softens an obstinate hose end without introducing anything slippery.
Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm but not crushing. A self-locking quick-connect takes no clamp and is finished once it clicks and holds against a hard tug. Return the hose to every original clip and confirm clearance from the exhaust and the front driveline before the plastics go back on.
Finish by proving the repair. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while the joints are dry. Wipe each connection with a clean light rag to make any seepage obvious, start the engine and inspect at idle, then check again after a few minutes of running and a slow lap. One last note worth carrying with you: the filter on the injected 400FSi sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than inline on the visible hose, so if the machine still runs starved after a leak-free install, that assembly is where the search continues.
