Understanding the plumbing on the 2015 King Quad 400ASi before you pick up a tool saves a great deal of trouble. This is an injected machine, not a carbureted one, and that distinction determines the order of operations, the type of hose you buy, and how you confirm the repair worked.
Tracing the Fuel Path on the 400ASi
Fuel begins in the tank under the front plastic, where an electric pump module sits submerged. That pump pressurizes the supply and pushes it through a hose to the throttle body injector, which sprays a metered charge into the intake. Because a pump provides the motive force, there is no petcock valve at the base of the tank — nothing to flip to OFF and no gravity feed to interrupt. The circuit also retains pressure after the engine stops, sometimes for hours, so relieving it on purpose is the first thing you do rather than the last thing you think about.
Two further consequences of the injected layout are worth knowing in advance. Connections on this platform may use self-locking quick-connect couplers rather than plain barbs with clamps, and the fuel filter lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly instead of on the visible hose. That means a fresh hose does nothing for a clogged filter; if delivery problems continue after a clean install, the in-tank unit is the next thing to examine. And since this is a 4X4 model with the automatic CVT drivetrain, the hose routes around the front differential housing, the front driveshaft, and extra frame crossmembers, so clearances are tighter than they would be on a two-wheel-drive quad and the retaining clips are load-bearing, not decorative.
Where Fuel Hose Loses the Fight
Two forms of degradation attack the same piece of rubber. Heat cycles from the engine and years of exposure to open air and sunlight drive the plasticizers out of the hose wall, so a once-flexible hose becomes stiff, chalky, and eventually cracked wherever it bends. Dry, low-humidity environments accelerate this because the surrounding air continuously wicks moisture from the rubber. Meanwhile, ethanol-blended pump fuel absorbs water and chemically breaks down the inner liner, leaving gum and varnish at the fittings when the machine sits with fuel standing in the line. Pump pressure pushes against every one of those weak spots, so an injected system reveals a marginal hose earlier than a carbureted one would.
Recognizing the Symptoms
- A gasoline smell around the tank that is sharpest right after shutdown
- A wet patch or dried stain on the skid plate, frame rail, or garage floor
- Fine surface cracking, a chalky texture, or a rigid glassy stretch you can feel by pinching the hose
- Dust caked into a ring at a fitting, marking a seep that dries before it drips
- Bogging under load, a stumble on hard throttle, or a lean condition showing up at higher rpm
Do not use the absence of a puddle as proof of a healthy hose. Pressurized fuel frequently atomizes and evaporates on its way out of a marginal joint, so a leak can be real and invisible at the same time.
Tools, Parts, and Gasoline Safety
Set everything out first: nitrile gloves, safety glasses, a lidded fuel-rated container, a drain pan, replacement hose rated for injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, clamps suited to your fittings, a quick-disconnect release tool if locking couplers are used, line-clamping pliers for pinching off a low-pressure section since no petcock exists, sockets and a screwdriver for the bodywork, a razor blade, and clean rags.
The gasoline is the real hazard, so plan around it. Vapor is heavier than air and settles along the floor where pilot lights and power strips live, which means genuine ventilation is an open garage door or the driveway, not a window six feet up. Shut off appliances with standing flames, keep sparks out of the area entirely, and clean spills immediately instead of letting them evaporate slowly all day.
Removal Sequence
Relieve the pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse or relay and cranking briefly until the engine stalls or will not fire, then key off and disconnect the battery negative. Strip the seat and plastics to expose the tank and the hose run to the throttle body, slide the drain pan into place, and drape a rag over the first fitting you separate, since residual fuel will still come out.
Slide clamps well back along the hose before disturbing a joint. On a quick-connect coupler, depress the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off without levering to the side, because aged plastic gets brittle. On a varnished barb, twist the hose a quarter turn to break the bond before pulling, and if it will not release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it off in halves to spare the fitting. Photograph the routing through each clip and around the front driveline before the old hose is fully out.
Installation and the Pressure Test
Cut the new hose to the original length exactly, because leftover slack only finds something hot or rotating to rub against. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and install it dry — grease, oil, or silicone on a pressurized sealing surface creates a leak path and allows the hose to migrate off the barb under vibration. Hot water for thirty seconds softens a stubborn end. Place new clamps just behind each raised bead and tighten evenly, and where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until it clicks and tug firmly to verify the latch rather than adding a clamp that does not belong.
Refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the circuit while everything is still dry. Inspect both joints closely, then start the engine and watch through several minutes of idle with a clean rag in hand. Take a short slow lap, check one final time while the engine bay is warm, and put the panels and seat back on.
