Pinch the fuel hose on a 2015 Scrambler XP 1000 EPS between two fingers. If it feels like a garden hose that has been left in the sun for a decade, you already have your answer. Hardened fuel line is the leading cause of the mystery gasoline smell that riders spend weeks chasing, and on this machine the fix is well within reach of a well-equipped garage.
Establishing the Fuel System You Have
Start by confirming the obvious. The XP 1000 EPS is fuel injected, with an electric pump mounted inside the tank feeding the throttle body under pressure. There is no petcock, no reserve setting, and no way to interrupt flow with your hand. Lift the seat and you will find the pump and sender module bolted through the tank top with a wiring connector attached, and the hose leaving it commonly ends in a plastic quick-connect rather than a plain barb.
Because pressure remains in the circuit after shutdown, the job begins electrically. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly until it dies from lack of supply, shut the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Note also that this is an all-wheel-drive machine with power steering. The Slow Chemistry of Hose Failure
Two separate processes work on a fuel line at the same time. On the outside, the plasticizers that give rubber its flexibility gradually migrate out. On the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline is doing its own work. Alcohol pulls in moisture and slowly degrades the hose liner, and a Scrambler left sitting with E10 in the line for months accumulates gum and softened material that can break loose later. Dry, low-humidity climates push the exterior toward brittleness faster than damp ones. The result is a hose that can look serviceable while it is compromised in both directions.
Symptoms That Justify the Job
Look for evidence rather than guessing:
- A wet spot or fuel stain under the machine after it has sat overnight
- A gasoline smell around the tank that is strongest immediately after shutdown, while the system is still pressurized
- Cracking, crazing, or a hardened glazed section anywhere along the hose run
- Bogging under load, a stumble on hard throttle, or behavior that imitates an empty tank
- A ring of caked dirt at a fitting, the telltale left by fuel weeping and drying repeatedly
Do not expect a puddle every time. Pressurized fuel escaping a small breach often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so trust a persistent smell even with a dry floor beneath the machine.
Parts, Tools, and Ventilation
Have all of it ready before anything is open:
- Rubber or nitrile gloves
- An approved sealed container for the fuel you catch, never an open pail
- New hose rated for fuel injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter
- Fresh clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-disconnect tool if the tank end uses a locking collar
- Line-clamping pliers to pinch off any section, since no petcock exists on this model
- Sockets and drivers for the seat and side plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and plenty of rags
Gasoline handling deserves genuine respect. Vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and collects at floor level where water heater pilots, shop heaters, and power strips sit. Roll the machine outside if you can. If you cannot, open the overhead door completely and place a fan at ground level moving air out of the building. Keep every ignition source away and an extinguisher within a single step of the work.
Extracting the Old Hose
Remove the seat and whatever panels block the tank so the whole line is visible from module to throttle body. Set a drain pan under the lowest point and wrap a rag around each fitting before opening it, since a bled hose still holds fuel that will run out the moment the joint separates.
Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before you disturb anything. Quick-connect fittings want both locking tabs squeezed evenly and a straight pull, never a sideways pry, because aged plastic collars crack under that load. If varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, a gentle twist usually breaks the seal, and if it does not, cut the hose lengthwise and peel it away rather than risking the fitting. Photograph the routing and every clip while the old hose is still in position, particularly around the front differential where the path is least intuitive.
Installing and Testing the Replacement
Cut the new hose to match the original length. Leaving it long invites chafe against frame edges or contact with the driveline, neither of which shows up until it is a problem. Push each end all the way onto its fitting until it bottoms out, and install everything dry. Keep grease, oil, and silicone spray entirely away from fuel fittings, because any film on the sealing surface is exactly what lets pressurized fuel creep past a clamp. Hot water is the only assembly aid worth using on a stubborn hose end.
Place new clamps just inboard of the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal but not enough to deform the hose. A self-locking quick-connect at the tank pushes on until it clicks; confirm the latch with a solid tug and leave clamps out of that joint entirely. Reroute the hose through every original clip so it stays clear of the exhaust and the front driveline.
Testing is the part nobody should skip. Refit the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking, letting the pump pressurize the line each time. Inspect both joints, wipe them with a light-colored rag, and look for a returning stain. Then start the engine and let it idle for several minutes, checking once more with everything hot and at full working pressure. Reinstall the plastics only after the connections have proven dry.
One structural note as you finish: on this injected Scrambler the fuel filter is integrated with the in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline where it can be reached. New hose solves leakage, but it does nothing for a restricted filter, so persistent fuel starvation after a clean install points inside the tank.
