Every rider should know how to check and replace the fuel line on their own machine, and the 2015 Brute Force 300 is about the friendliest platform to learn it on. The system is uncomplicated, the parts are inexpensive, and catching a bad hose before it splits saves you a long walk out of the woods.

Spend Two Minutes Inspecting the Line

Before you order anything, put your hands on the hose. With the seat off, follow the run from the tank down to the carburetor and squeeze it every few inches. Healthy hose gives under your fingers and springs back. Hose at the end of its life feels rigid, sometimes almost like plastic tubing, and small cracks appear at the bends the moment you flex it. A section that feels soft, spongy, or swollen has been chemically attacked from the inside and is just as finished as a hardened one.

Check the fittings while you are in there. A ring of dust caked around a barb is the residue of fuel that has been seeping out and evaporating over many rides. Look at the floor under the left side of the quad, too, since that is where the fuel valve sits and where a leak usually announces itself first.

Why the Rubber Turns Hard

The plasticizers that make new hose flexible slowly leave the compound over the years, and heat is the accelerant. The air-cooled 271cc single radiates enough warmth to age nearby hose faster than the section up near the tank. Once a hose has stiffened, ordinary chassis vibration and the flex of the frame over rough ground do the rest, opening hairline splits that grow with every ride.

Dry air compounds the problem by pulling moisture out of the hose wall, which is why machines in arid country tend to need hose sooner than those in humid regions. From the inside, ethanol-blended fuel is the aggressor. It holds moisture against the liner and gradually degrades it, and it does the most damage when the quad is parked and the fuel is stagnant. A Brute Force 300 that sits between seasons with old gas in the line often shows gumming and internal breakdown well before the mileage would suggest.

The Petcock Makes This Easy

This is a carbureted machine, so a petcock at the tank gives you a hard shut off for the fuel supply. Turn it off and the flow stops; there is nothing under pressure anywhere in the system. Gravity moves fuel down the hose to the carburetor inlet, and both ends attach with plain barbs and hose clamps rather than the pressurized quick-connect couplers found on injected machines. No fuse pulling, no key cycling, no special release tool.

You also get a float bowl drain screw on the carburetor, which is worth using. Run a short clear hose from the drain into a container, open the screw, and the bowl empties cleanly so the carb side of the job stays tidy. Being a 2x4, this chassis carries no front differential or extra driveline hardware, so the hose route is short and unobstructed, which makes access considerably better than on a comparable four-wheel-drive utility quad.

Gathering What You Need

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • Approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
  • Replacement line in the correct inside diameter, purchased slightly long
  • New hose clamps or a small assortment kit, since aged clamps lose tension
  • Clear tubing for the float bowl drain
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, basic sockets, clean rags

Take the safety side seriously. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, where a water heater pilot or a shop heater can ignite it, so do this work outdoors or with the garage door open all the way. Keep an extinguisher nearby, stay away from any spark or flame source, and let spilled fuel evaporate in the open rather than sealing fuel-soaked rags in a closed bin.

Pulling the Old Hose Out

Shut the petcock first, then remove the seat and any plastic panel that blocks your view of the tank outlet and the carburetor. Drain the float bowl into your container through the clear tube and close the screw back up. Slide the pan into position and lay a rag across the fitting you plan to open, because the hose still holds fuel even with the valve closed.

Loosen both clamps and slide them well back along the hose. Instead of pulling the hose straight off its barb, rotate it to break the varnish seal that has formed; that protects the petcock spigot and the carburetor inlet from unnecessary strain. A hose that has truly bonded to a fitting will come off easily if you slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away in two pieces. Note the original path and any frame clip before the old hose is fully removed so the new one follows suit.

Installing the New Line and Checking Your Work

Match the length of the old hose when you cut the new one. Extra length can chafe against the frame or fold into a kink, while a short piece keeps tension on both barbs. Push each end fully home until it seats against the shoulder, and do it dry — no grease, no oil, no silicone. Lubricant on a fuel fitting creates a leak path and lets the hose walk off under vibration. If the end is tight, a brief dip in hot water softens it enough to slide on with hand pressure.

Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly to snug, stopping well short of biting into the hose. Open the petcock, allow a minute for the line and float bowl to fill, then wipe both joints with a dry rag and inspect them closely under good light. Fire the engine, let it idle for several minutes, and look again while everything is hot. Only when both connections stay completely dry should the bodywork go back on and the 2015 Brute Force 300 return to the trail.
