Renewing the Fuel Line on Your 2015 Honda Rincon 680 4x4

The fuel that goes into a 2015 Rincon 680 is not the same fuel the machine was designed around, and that matters for the rubber carrying it. Modern pump gas contains ethanol, and ethanol behaves differently against a hose than straight gasoline does. Understanding that is the fastest route to knowing when your Rincon needs a fresh line and why.
What Ethanol Does Inside a Fuel Hose
Alcohol in pump gas is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of the surrounding air and holds it in suspension. Inside a fuel line, that moisture laden mixture works on the inner liner of the hose, softening and eventually breaking it down. The effect is worst when fuel sits still, which is why a Rincon that goes unused for several months at a stretch tends to have worse hose condition than one ridden year round. As the fuel ages it also leaves gum and varnish deposits, and those collect right at the barbs where the hose seals.
The visible half of the story runs in the opposite direction. On the outside, rubber loses the plasticizers that keep it flexible, and it grows stiff and then brittle. Engine heat cycling, sunlight, and ozone all speed that along, and dry climates speed it most of all, because low ambient humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and leaves a glazed surface that cracks the moment it flexes. The net result is a hose hardening outside while degrading inside, capable of feeding fine debris toward an injector with a tiny orifice.
Signs Your Hose Has Had Enough
- A gasoline smell around the tank and seat, strongest right after shutdown while the system still holds pressure
- Fuel pooling on the skid plate or a wet stain running down a frame rail
- Fine cracking, a chalky finish, or a hose section that feels hard rather than springy
- Bogging when the throttle opens, hesitation under load, or a stall that feels like an empty tank
- A dirt caked ring at a fitting where seeping fuel has dried and trapped dust
Because this is a pressurized system, escaping fuel often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip. A strong smell over a dry floor is still evidence worth acting on.
Fuel Delivery on This Rincon
Your 2015 Rincon 680 is fuel injected, not carbureted. An electric pump mounted in the tank pushes fuel under pressure to the throttle body, where an injector meters it into the intake. Because of that, there is no petcock to close and no float bowl to drain, and the line stays pressurized after the engine stops. Some connections on this platform use a self locking quick connect coupler rather than a hose clamp. The fuel filter is part of the in tank pump assembly instead of being an inline part you can service on the visible hose, which is worth remembering if delivery symptoms outlast this repair.
This is also a 4x4 with independent rear suspension. The front differential and driveshaft occupy the forward frame, so the hose is retained by clips along a path deliberately clear of rotating hardware and hot exhaust. Photograph that path before disturbing it.
Setting Up: Supplies and Airflow
- Hose rated for fuel injection pressure, matched to the original inside diameter
- New clamps for the fittings, plus a quick connect release tool if a locking coupler is present
- Line clamping pliers, since this model has no fuel valve to stop flow
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, and plenty of rags
- A drain pan and a sealable metal or fuel rated container
- Small sockets, a flat blade screwdriver, and a sharp utility blade
Take the ventilation seriously rather than treating it as a formality. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles along the floor where you smell it least and where a spark from an appliance or a tool is most likely to find it. Open the door completely and set a fan at ground level moving air out. Shut off anything with a pilot light in the same space, disconnect the battery before fuel is exposed, keep an extinguisher within reach, and cap your container whenever you are not pouring.
Depressurizing and Removing the Old Hose
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the starter for a few seconds until the engine stalls or refuses to fire, switch the key off, then disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the plastics covering the tank so both ends of the hose are in view. Slide the drain pan into place and lay a rag over the first joint you open, because a depressurized line still holds fuel that will run out.
Walk each clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. On a quick connect, squeeze the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off, never prying sideways, since aged plastic collars fracture. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond at the barb and pull it off with steady pressure. If it has welded itself on, slit it lengthwise with your blade and peel it clear rather than levering on the throttle body or pump module. Note every clip and clearance point around the front driveline before the old hose is fully out.
Fitting the New Line and Checking Your Work
Cut the replacement to match the original length, then push each end fully onto its barb dry. A brief dip in hot water is the only help stiff rubber should get, because grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting create a leak path and allow the hose to creep off the barb under pressure and vibration. Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting the hose wall. If a self locking coupler is used, push until it clicks and pull hard to confirm the latch caught; that style of fitting needs no clamp.
Return the hose to its clips, reinstall the pump fuse, and Reconnect the battery. Cycle the key on and off several times without starting the engine; each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you inspect both connections while they are clean and dry. Wipe them and check again, then start the engine and inspect a third time at idle with everything vibrating. Take a short slow loop, shut down, and give both joints one final look before the bodywork returns.
