The first thing to establish about the 2015 Rancher 420 4x4 DCT IRS is that it is fuel injected, and that single fact reshapes the entire fuel line job compared with the carbureted Ranchers that came before it. There is no petcock on this machine. Nothing you can reach with your fingers shuts the fuel off, and the feed hose still holds pressure long after the key comes out. Knowing that before you loosen a clamp is the difference between a tidy repair and gasoline across your knuckles.
What Fuel Injection Changes About This Job
Fuel on this Rancher lives in a tank with an electric pump module submerged inside it. That module pressurizes the feed hose running to the throttle body, and the fuel filter is part of the assembly inside the tank rather than sitting inline where you can see or replace it. A carbureted quad, by contrast, gives you a mechanical shutoff valve, gravity feed, plain clamped barbs, and a float bowl drain screw for emptying the low side. None of those conveniences exist here, so you substitute a deliberate depressurizing procedure and, where needed, line–clamping pliers to pinch off a hose.
Connections on injected models also differ. Where a carbureted machine uses hose clamps at both ends, this Rancher may use a self–locking quick–connect coupler at the pump outlet, which releases by squeezing or depressing its locking tabs rather than by loosening anything. Those plastic collars grow brittle with age, so they get pressed squarely and pulled straight, never pried sideways.
The DCT and independent rear suspension do not change the fuel plumbing, but the 4x4 driveline does affect access. With a front differential and propeller shaft under the frame, the hose threads through tighter clearance than a two–wheel–drive layout would need, and the clips holding it away from the driveline and hot surfaces matter on reassembly.
Why the Hose Deteriorates in the First Place
Fuel hose stays flexible because of plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those compounds slowly migrate out and evaporate over the years. Heat cycling from the liquid–cooled 420cc single and the exhaust nearby speeds the loss along. The hose stiffens, its surface dries out, and eventually hairline cracks appear where it bends hardest. Dry, low–humidity climates accelerate that by drawing moisture from the rubber wall, and on a pressurized circuit a hardened hose is more likely to weep at the fitting than to split in the middle.
Ethanol–blended pump gas contributes from inside. Left standing in the line through a long idle period, the alcohol fraction pulls in atmospheric moisture and works on the inner liner, shedding fine material toward the injector and leaving deposits behind. That matters more on an injected machine than a carbureted one, since injector passages are considerably smaller than carburetor jets.
Symptoms That Point at the Fuel Line
- A gasoline smell around the machine, often strongest right after shutdown while the system still holds pressure
- A damp ring, wet streak, or puddle beneath the tank area or along the frame
- Fine cracking, a chalky surface, or a hardened section you can feel when pinching the hose
- Bogging under load, stumbling on hard acceleration, or the engine acting starved at higher rpm
- Dust caked into a dark ring at a fitting where fuel has been seeping and evaporating
Trust your nose here as much as your eyes. A small leak on the pressure side often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a persistent fuel odor with no visible puddle is still a real finding.
Tools, Parts, and Ventilation
- Replacement hose rated for fuel injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor hose
- Fresh clamps to suit whatever style you find, plus a quick–connect release tool if the pump outlet uses a locking coupler
- Line–clamping pliers, since there is no petcock to stop flow
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed, approved fuel container
- Sockets and a trim tool for the seat and side plastics, plus rags and a flashlight
Ventilation is not a formality. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so in a closed garage it sinks and pools across the floor at exactly the height you kneel rather than venting upward. Roll the Rancher outside if you can, or open the door fully and set a fan on the ground pushing air out of the space. Extinguish pilot lights, move chargers and power tools clear, and keep every ignition source well away.
Relieving Pressure and Removing the Old Line
Begin by pulling the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse box, then start the engine and let it run until it starves and stalls. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. That sequence is what makes the hose safe to open, and it is not optional on an injected machine.
Remove the seat and whatever side plastics block access to the tank outlet and the run of hose heading to the throttle body. Slide a pan underneath and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, because a depressurized line still holds residual fuel. Move any clamp well back before twisting a hose end free. For a quick–connect, depress the tabs evenly and pull straight off. Twist the old hose to break the varnish bond rather than yanking it, and if it will not release, slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it away instead of risking the fitting. Note every clip and clearance point as it comes out.
Fitting the New Hose and Verifying the Seal
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly, since extra hose chafes on the frame or drifts toward hot surfaces. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms, working dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all leave a film on the sealing surface that gives pressurized fuel a path to creep out, and hot water is the correct way to soften a stubborn hose end. Seat new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly. If a self–locking quick–connect is used at the tank, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm it has latched — no clamp is wanted there.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, letting you inspect both connections while the surrounding area is still dry. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag and look again, then start the engine and check once more at idle. Only after several minutes of leak–free running should the plastics go back on. One last note worth keeping in mind: because the filter lives inside the tank with the pump, a fresh hose will not cure a clogged filter, so if fuel delivery complaints persist after a clean install, the in–tank unit is the next place to look.
