Buying the right hose matters more on this machine than most owners expect. A 2015 Rancher 420 4x4 DCT EPS runs a pressurized fuel circuit, and generic hose pulled off a shelf because the diameter looked close is a leak waiting to happen. Sort out the parts first, then the physical work becomes routine.
Choosing Hose and Clamps That Belong Here
Two specifications matter. The first is pressure rating: this Rancher is fuel–injected, so the hose has to be rated for injection pressure rather than the low–pressure carburetor service hose that suits an older gravity–fed quad. The second is inside diameter, which needs to match the original exactly. Hose that is slightly oversized will feel like it fits and then weep quietly around the barb once the system charges, and undersized hose stretches thin and stresses the wall.
Clamps deserve the same attention. Whatever style your machine came with, replace them rather than reusing hardware that has been compressed for a decade. Spring clamps lose tension and worm–gear bands deform the seat they have been biting into. If either end of your line uses a self–locking quick–connect coupler with plastic release tabs, no clamp belongs there at all, and forcing one on will do more harm than good. Look at both ends of the existing line before ordering so you know which situation you have.
The Reason Fuel Hose Has a Shelf Life
Rubber fuel line degrades from both surfaces at once. Externally, the plasticizers that keep it flexible slowly migrate out of the material under years of engine heat cycles, so the hose stiffens, glazes over, and eventually feels chalky. A dry climate accelerates this, because arid air draws moisture out of the wall and hardens it from the outside inward. Once flexibility is gone, the chassis movement a working utility 4x4 generates turns into strain that cracks the hose at bends and just behind each clamp.
Internally, ethanol–blended pump gas attacks the liner. E10 pulls in atmospheric moisture, and a Rancher that sits with fuel in the system for a long stretch gives that mixture months to soften the liner and lay down gum. None of that is visible from outside, which is exactly why age alone is a legitimate reason to replace a line, and why debris from a decaying liner can reach the injector on a machine like this one.
Warning Signs to Take Seriously
- A gasoline smell around the seat and tank, most noticeable during the first minutes after shutdown
- A damp spot, drip mark, or small puddle beneath the machine after it has sat
- Cracking that opens as you flex the hose, or a hardened section you can feel by pinching it
- A ring of caked dirt at a fitting, formed where seeping fuel trapped dust and dried
- Bogging under load, hesitation as the throttle comes on, or a lean stumble that feels like a low tank
- Longer cranking before the engine fires, suggesting pressure bleeds off while parked
Because the line is pressurized rather than gravity–fed, escaping fuel often atomizes before it can form a drop. Your nose is frequently a better detector than the floor.
Understanding This Model's Fuel Delivery
The 2015 Rancher 420 uses PGM–FI, so several things a carbureted quad would give you are absent. There is no petcock under the tank to shut off flow, which is why line–clamping pliers appear on the tool list. There is no float bowl drain to dump the low point of the system. And there is no inline filter on the visible hose, because the filter element sits inside the tank as part of the pump module along with the pressure regulator. A single pressurized hose leaves that module and runs forward along the frame to the throttle body on the 420cc single. Since the circuit holds pressure after shutdown, bleeding it down is the mandatory first step of the job.
Tools, Workspace, and Gasoline Safety
Alongside the hose and clamps, have nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, an approved sealed container for drained fuel with a wide catch pan, a socket set for the seat and plastics, a small pick for spring clips, a razor knife, a quick–disconnect release tool if your coupler needs one, and a thick stack of rags.
The gasoline itself is the real hazard here. Its vapor is heavier than air, so it settles along the floor of a closed garage, which is precisely where furnace and water heater pilot flames sit. Work outdoors or with the door open so air moves at ground level, shut down anything with a flame or exposed element in the space, skip drop lights with bare bulbs, and set an extinguisher within arm's reach before you open the first connection.
Removal and Installation
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly until it stalls, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and tank plastics so the whole hose run is exposed, slide your pan underneath, and keep a rag over each fitting as you open it, because a bled line still holds fuel. Retract clamps along the hose before disturbing their fittings. Quick–connect couplers release with both tabs pressed evenly and a straight pull, never with sideways prying, since aged plastic collars crack easily. Barbed fittings loosen with a gentle twist that breaks the varnish bond, and a hose that has cemented itself in place should be slit lengthwise and peeled off. Follow the routing on the way out, noting that this 4x4 sends the line past front differential hardware and additional frame structure that a two–wheel–drive machine does not carry, so extra clips and clearance points are involved.
Cut the new hose to the exact original length. Excess rubs frame tubes or drifts toward moving parts, and a short piece pulls at both fittings every time the suspension cycles. Seat each end fully on its barb until it bottoms, working dry with nothing lubricated anywhere near the connection, because a film of grease or oil on the sealing surface hands pressurized fuel a route past the clamp. Hot water for a few seconds softens a stiff end. Position new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, snug rather than crushed. Push a self–locking coupler until it clicks and then tug to confirm the latch. Return the hose to every factory clip so it stays clear of exhaust heat and the front driveline.
The Leak Check That Ends the Job
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, giving you a clean, dry view of both joints when any seepage would be most obvious. Wipe the connections, start the engine, and inspect again at idle and after a few throttle blips, watching for the faintest darkening at either fitting. Only after several minutes of confirmed dry running should the plastics and seat go back on. If delivery still feels soft with fresh hose installed, the filter inside the in–tank pump module is the next component to examine, since nothing on the outside of the tank filters fuel on this Rancher.
