Getting a Fresh Fuel Line Onto Your 2015 Can-Am Renegade 500

The smell of gasoline in the garage is rarely a mystery worth ignoring. On a 2015 Renegade 500 it very often traces back to a hardened fuel hose or a fitting that has started to weep, and both are fixable in an afternoon with basic tools. What sets the job apart from older quads is the fuel system itself: this Rotax powered machine uses electronic fuel injection with an in-tank pump, so the supply line is pressurized and there is no petcock to shut off flow before you begin.
Spotting a Line That Is Nearly Done
Fuel hose usually telegraphs its condition. Fresh gasoline pooled on the skid plate or dripping onto the floor after the quad has been parked is the loudest signal. A fuel smell that hangs around the tank, worst in the first minutes after shutdown while pressure is still trapped, comes a close second. On the hose itself, look for hairline cracks, a chalky gray film, and stiffness where it bends around the frame, then squeeze it — a good hose compresses and springs back, while a failing one feels like hard plastic tube.
How the engine runs matters too. Bogging when you get into the throttle, a lean surge partway through the rev range, or the machine acting as though it is out of gas with fuel still in the tank all point toward a supply problem. Look for a dirt crusted ring at any fitting, which forms where a slow seep repeatedly wets and dries surrounding grime. On an injected system a pressure side pinhole may vaporize entirely, so an unexplained smell with no puddle is still a real finding.
Age, Heat, and Ethanol
The reason hoses fail is straightforward. Fuel line rubber holds plasticizers that keep it flexible, and those slowly leach out over years of exposure to heat, air, and fuel. The hose stiffens, loses its tolerance for vibration and flex, and develops surface checking that eventually reaches all the way through. Heat radiating off the V-twin makes the throttle body end age fastest, and dry climates accelerate the whole process by drawing moisture out of the hose wall.
Ethanol blended pump gas attacks from the inside. Alcohol pulls water into the fuel and degrades the inner liner into a soft, gummy layer that flakes off and travels downstream. A Renegade that sat through a long layup with old fuel in it can be well past serviceable internally while the outside still looks acceptable, which is exactly why age deserves as much weight as visual inspection.
Preparation and a Genuine Safety Note
Have all of this ready before you open a fitting: gloves, a sealable fuel container, injection rated replacement hose in the original inside diameter, new clamps in the correct sizes, line clamping pliers to substitute for the fuel valve this model does not have, a quick disconnect release tool if the tank fitting is a locking coupler, a razor knife, hand tools for the seat and plastics, and a generous supply of rags.
Then take the fuel seriously. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it collects at floor level and travels toward pilot lights, shop heaters, and any tool that throws a spark. A cracked window accomplishes very little. Open the overhead door completely or move the quad into the driveway, keep the drain container capped, and disconnect the battery so the pump cannot energize while the system is open.
Depressurizing and Pulling the Hose
Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the starter until the engine dies. That vents the pressure held in the line and is the difference between a drip and a spray. Switch the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable, and take off the seat and side plastics to reach the tank and trace the hose to the throttle body.
Position a catch pan and cover each fitting with a rag before disturbing it, since even a bled line holds fuel. Slide clamps back along the hose first, then break each end free with a gentle twist rather than a hard pull, because varnish bonds rubber tightly to metal. Quick connects release when both locking tabs are depressed squarely and the fitting is drawn straight off; side loading them cracks collars that have hardened with age. A hose end that will not let go can be slit lengthwise and peeled off, sparing the barb.
Note the path before it disappears. This 4x4 Renegade routes its line around front differential hardware and additional frame bracing that a two wheel drive quad does not have, adding clip points that are much easier to reproduce from photographs than from memory.
Installation, Then Proof
Cut the replacement to the exact original length. Extra hose finds something to rub through. Push both ends fully onto their barbs until they bottom against the shoulder, dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere near the sealing surfaces – lubricant is what gives pressurized fuel a route out. Hot water for thirty seconds softens a stubborn end enough to seat it by hand.
Install fresh clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly rather than crushing one side. If your machine uses a self locking quick connect at the tank, push until it clicks, then pull firmly to verify the latch; that joint takes no clamp. Route the hose back through every original guide, keeping clearance from the front driveline and from exhaust surfaces hot enough to damage rubber.
Finish with a proper leak check. Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times so the pump pressurizes the circuit with the engine off. Wipe both joints clean, then inspect and feel for seepage. Start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and check once more before the plastics go on. And bear in mind that the filter on this Renegade rides inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, so a restricted filter will not be cured by new hose alone.
