Every step of this job depends on one thing happening first, and it is not loosening a clamp. The 2015 Outlander MAX 500 DPS runs electronic fuel injection with an electric pump inside the tank, which means no petcock exists to shut off flow and the delivery hose holds pressure well after the engine stops. Bleeding that pressure down is step zero.
Taking the Pressure Out of the System
Do it in this order. Pull the fuel pump fuse or its relay, then turn the key and let the engine run until it starves and stops on its own. Shut the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery cable so the pump cannot be energized while your hands are in the fuel circuit.
Even with the system bled, the hose itself still holds liquid fuel. Slide a drain pan into position before you open anything and keep a rag draped over each joint as you break it. Expect a few ounces rather than a flood, and plan for it either way. Skipping this sequence on an injected machine is how a garage floor ends up soaked.
Ventilation and Handling Fuel Sensibly
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks. Rather than rising and venting through a window, it spreads across the floor in a low layer that can reach a water heater pilot, a furnace burner, or a battery charger sitting on the concrete. That is the actual hazard, and it is why an open window six feet up accomplishes very little.
Roll the machine outdoors if the weather cooperates. In a garage, open the main door completely and shut off every flame and spark source in the space before you begin. Wear nitrile gloves, since gasoline pulls the oils out of skin quickly, and add eye protection because a coupler that still holds residual pressure can spit sideways when it releases. Change out of any clothing you soak instead of wearing it through the rest of the job.
The Reasons Hose Wears Out
Fuel hose is flexible when new because of plasticizing compounds in the rubber, and engine heat drives them out over the years. The wall stiffens until it behaves more like plastic, and a stiff hose can no longer absorb vibration and frame flex, so those forces start opening fine cracks in the surface instead of being soaked up.
Climate and fuel chemistry both contribute. Dry air draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the outside inward, while ethanol-blended pump gas holds water against the inner liner and degrades it from within. Fuel that sits through a long idle period leaves gum and varnish behind, which restricts the passage and bonds the hose to its barbs. On a machine ten years into service, replacement is preventive rather than reactive.
Symptoms and Supplies
Signs of a failing hose include a fuel odor that lingers around the tank after shutdown, staining or a puddle beneath the machine, hose that feels chalky or shows checking when flexed, an engine that bogs under load or acts starved for fuel, and a caked dust ring at a fitting where seepage has dried repeatedly. Remember that a pressurized leak can atomize before it drips, so smell counts as much as sight.

Removal and Installation
With the system bled, remove the seat and side plastics to expose the tank outlet and the hose run toward the throttle body. Push clamps well back along the hose before disturbing a joint so they cannot gouge the barb. On a self-locking quick-connect, compress the tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off rather than levering it sideways, which cracks aged plastic collars. At a barbed fitting, twist the hose gently to break the varnish bond, and slit a bonded hose lengthwise with a blade instead of forcing it.
Photograph the routing before the old line is fully out. This is a 4x4 on the lengthened MAX chassis, so the hose clears front differential hardware and additional crossmembers a two-wheel-drive quad does not carry. Cut the replacement to the original length and add nothing, since slack hose eventually leans on a frame edge or drifts toward exhaust heat. Push both ends fully onto their barbs until they bottom out, dry — grease, oil, and silicone on a sealing surface give pressurized fuel a path to creep past the clamp, so keep them away entirely. Hot water softens a stubborn end in seconds. Seat new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly. A quick-connect gets pressed until the collar clicks, then tugged to confirm the latch, with no clamp added.
Leak Check and Final Notes
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking so the pump repressurizes the circuit. Wipe both joints with a clean rag and watch closely for beading fuel. Start the engine, inspect again at idle, and take one more look after the machine warms and the hose expands slightly. Reassemble the bodywork only once all three checks are dry.
Finally, keep the filter location in mind on this platform. It is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline on the visible hose, so if the Outlander still feels short on fuel after a clean installation, that module is the next thing to examine rather than the new line.
