Replacing it before it splits is cheap insurance. The job is straightforward for anyone comfortable pulling plastics, as long as you respect the fact that this Grizzly's fuel system holds pressure.

Rubber Has a Service Life

Two independent processes wear out fuel hose. On the outside, every heat cycle from the 550 twin drives a little more plasticizer out of the rubber wall. Over enough cycles the hose becomes stiff and slightly smaller in diameter, which means it no longer grips the barb the way it did new. Riders in dry country reach this point sooner, since arid air pulls moisture from the material and accelerates the change.

On the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline draws water into the fuel and slowly attacks the hose liner, softening it as the exterior grows brittle. Material that breaks loose travels downstream toward the injector. Fuel that sits in the system through months of inactivity evaporates and leaves varnish, which cements hose to fitting and hides slow seepage under a dried crust. A hose can look fine and still be at the end of its useful life.

Clues That You Have a Leak Developing

The most common first sign is smell. Raw gasoline noticeable around the quad, especially right after shutdown while the system still holds pressure, means fuel is getting out. Visual evidence follows: a wet spot or puddle beneath the machine on clean ground, a stain on the skid plate, or a dust-caked ring where fuel has seeped at a fitting and dried.

Running problems complete the picture. A 550 that hesitates when you crack the throttle, stumbles lean at part throttle, or acts starved on a long climb may be losing pressure through a cracked hose wall or a relaxed clamp. Squeeze the hose along its length. Anything that feels rigid, chalky, or crackles under your fingers is done, leaking or not.

An Injected Machine Changes the Rules

There is no petcock on this Grizzly to shut fuel off. The 2014 Grizzly 550 uses electronic fuel injection with the pump inside the tank, and the supply hose stays pressurized after the key comes out, so relieving that pressure is step one rather than an afterthought. Two practical consequences follow: your replacement hose must be rated for injection pressure, and the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump module rather than sitting inline where you could swap it.

Preparing the Work Area

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A wide drain pan plus an approved sealed container for captured fuel
  • Injection-rated hose in the original inside diameter, trimmed to length on the bench
  • Fresh clamps in the correct style, and a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
  • Line-clamping pliers, standing in for the fuel valve this model does not have
  • Hand tools for the seat, panels, and tank hardware, plus plenty of clean rags

Gasoline vapor sinks. It gathers at floor level under the machine where an open window six feet up does nothing for you, so either work outdoors or open the bay completely and set a fan low to move air out across the floor. Kill every ignition source, skip the hot incandescent trouble light, and put a fire extinguisher on the ground where you can reach it from under the quad.

Disconnection Step by Step

Pull the fuel pump fuse, then crank the starter until the engine stumbles and dies to bleed off stored pressure. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Take the seat and side plastics off so the entire hose run from tank to throttle body is in plain view.

Slide the drain pan into position and lay a rag over the first joint before you open it, because residual fuel remains even in a depressurized hose. Move clamps well back along the hose before disturbing anything. For a quick-connect coupler, compress both tabs evenly and pull straight off with no prying at all — those collars grow brittle over time and break when levered sideways. Hose that has varnished onto a barb comes off best when slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled.

Take note of the routing on the way out. With 4x4 driveline hardware and power steering components crowding the forward chassis, the hose follows a specific path through frame clearance points that a two-wheel-drive quad would not require. Reproducing it keeps the new hose off hot exhaust and away from anything that moves.

Fitting and Clamping the New Hose

Match the original length exactly. A long hose sags and chafes, a short one pulls at its fittings, and neither lasts. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, working dry throughout. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting give pressurized fuel a channel to escape under the clamp, so keep all of it away from the sealing surface. Hot water for half a minute softens an uncooperative hose end.

Set the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, tightened evenly to a firm grip that does not cut the rubber. If the tank side is a self-locking quick-connect, push until you feel the click, then pull to confirm it has latched, and leave the clamp out of it. Snap the hose back into every original guide before reassembly.

Before the Seat Goes Back On

Refit the pump fuse and Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without starting so the pump pressurizes the hose. Inspect both joints between cycles while everything is still visibly clean, since any dampness on fresh rubber is easy to spot. Wipe and repeat until you are confident.

Fire the engine next and let it idle a few minutes, checking both connections with a clean rag and smelling the air near the tank as well as looking. Reinstall the plastics only after a leak-free run. One closing note for this platform: because the filter lives inside the tank with the pump, a machine that still hesitates after a good hose install points toward that assembly rather than the line you just replaced.
