There is no fuel valve to reach for on a 2014 Grizzly 550 4x4, and that single detail shapes the entire job. Yamaha built this machine with electronic fuel injection and an electric pump submerged in the tank, so the hose you are about to replace carries pressurized fuel rather than gravity-fed fuel. Handle the sequence correctly and it is a straightforward afternoon repair. Skip a step and you get a face full of gasoline.

Understanding the Circuit You Are Opening

Fuel leaves the in-tank pump under pressure, travels through the hose to the throttle body, and gets metered by the injector. Because the pump holds residual pressure after shutdown, cracking a fitting cold will still spray. There is also no serviceable inline filter on this platform — filtration happens inside the tank as part of the pump module — so the visible hose run is short, simple, and entirely about delivery.

How Hose Fails From Both Directions at Once

Rubber does not simply wear out; it degrades chemically. Heat from the engine drives off the plasticizers that keep the wall flexible, leaving hose that is stiffer and dimensionally smaller than the day it was cut. Riders in arid country notice this sooner, since low humidity strips moisture from the material and speeds the hardening.

Working the opposite direction, ethanol in modern pump gas pulls water into the fuel and slowly breaks down the hose liner from within. The result is a line that has gone glassy on the outside while turning soft and porous on the inside, sometimes shedding fine material downstream toward the injector. Fuel that sat in the system through a long idle stretch leaves gum and varnish behind, cementing the hose to its barbs and masking early seepage under dried residue.

Symptoms Worth Acting On Immediately

  • Fuel pooling on the skid plate or dripping onto the floor where the quad is parked
  • A gasoline smell that lingers around the machine, strongest in the first minutes after you shut it down
  • Visible checking, splitting, or a hardened glassy patch anywhere along the hose
  • A dust-caked ring at a fitting, which is dried fuel residue collecting airborne grit
  • Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or a lean stumble that feels like the tank is running low when it is not

Do not wait on any of these. A hose that is seeping under pressure sits inches from hot exhaust, and the failure mode gets worse fast once cracking starts.

Setting Up the Job

Collect everything before you touch a fitting. You want gloves, safety glasses, an approved fuel container, a drain pan, injection-rated hose in the correct inside diameter, replacement clamps, line-clamping pliers, a quick-disconnect tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler, hand tools for the seat and plastics, and more rags than you think you need.

Ventilation is the part people shortcut. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it collects at floor level where an open window does nothing. Work outside if you can, or set a fan low in an open garage bay to move air across the floor. Kill every ignition source, including trouble lights that run hot, and keep an extinguisher on the bench rather than in a cabinet.

Releasing Pressure and Freeing the Old Line

Start by pulling the fuel pump fuse, then crank the engine until it stumbles and quits. That burns off most of the stored pressure. Key off, negative battery cable disconnected, seat and side panels removed so the whole hose run is visible.

Slide the drain pan into position and lay a rag across the first joint before opening it, because residual fuel will still run out of a depressurized line. Walk spring clips or worm-gear clamps back along the hose before disturbing the connection. For a quick-connect fitting, press the release tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off with no side load at all — aged plastic collars snap when levered. Hose that refuses to release from a barb should be cut lengthwise and peeled rather than yanked.

Photograph the routing before the old hose is fully out. This is a 4x4 chassis with a front differential and driveline hardware crowding the area, so the factory path threads through clearance points a two-wheel-drive layout would not need. Reproducing it exactly keeps the new hose off hot and moving parts.

Fitting Fresh Hose Dry

Cut the new piece to match the old one rather than leaving slack. An overlong run will sag against the header or rub a frame edge until it wears through. Work each end fully onto its barb until it stops against the shoulder, and install it completely dry — no grease, no assembly lube, no silicone. Lubricant on a sealing surface is exactly what lets pressurized fuel creep past a clamp. Warm water softens a stubborn hose end if you need help.

Place the new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and snug them evenly so the hose is gripped without being cut. If the tank end on your 550 uses a self-locking quick-connect, push it home until it clicks and then tug hard to verify the latch engaged; adding a clamp there accomplishes nothing. Snap the hose back into its original guides.

Confirming a Dry Repair

Refit the pump fuse and Reconnect the battery, then turn the key on, wait for the pump to finish priming, and turn it off. Repeat that four or five times without starting, inspecting both joints between cycles while the surfaces are still clean and dry. Any weeping shows up immediately against fresh rubber.

With no leaks visible, fire the Grizzly and let it idle several minutes, checking again with a clean rag and paying attention to the smell of the air around the tank. Only then should the plastics and seat go back on. If the machine still hesitates after a confirmed dry install, remember that filtration lives inside the tank on this model — a clogged in-tank filter or a tired pump produces the same starved-for-fuel behavior a bad hose does.
