Riders often assume that a machine with electric power steering must have a complicated fuel system to match, but the 2014 Grizzly 450 EPS is carbureted. The hose you will be replacing is unpressurized, gravity fed from the tank, and controlled by a hand-operated fuel valve, which means no relay to pull and no pressurized coupler to release. The power steering unit only matters here because it shares space up front and shapes how you get your hands to both fittings.

Gasoline Handling and What to Lay Out First

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks to floor level and travels toward water heater pilots, battery chargers, and any tool with a brush motor. Work outdoors or with the overhead door raised fully, shut down every ignition source in the space, keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach, and put the lid on your drain container as soon as you finish pouring. Then gather:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A lidded fuel-rated container plus a shallow catch pan
  • Gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
  • New spring clips or small worm-gear clamps
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch off an open end
  • Flat screwdriver, socket set, sharp razor blade, clean rags

What Makes a Fuel Hose Fail

Age is the mechanism, not mileage. The plasticizers that keep fuel line rubber supple leave the material steadily, and the rigid wall left behind cracks at the bends near the valve spigot and carburetor inlet rather than flexing there. Heat cycling off the engine hastens that hardening, and dry, arid air accelerates it further by drawing moisture out of the hose from the outside surface inward.

Ethanol-blended fuel works the interior over at the same time, degrading the liner and pulling water into the system, while gasoline that stands unused for months deposits gum and varnish that narrows the bore. Because the outside hardens while the inside softens, a hose can pass a quick visual check and still be failing, which is why replacement on time in service beats replacement on appearance.

Symptoms Riders Notice First

  • A puddle or damp trail beneath the frame after the machine sits with the valve open
  • Persistent gasoline smell around the quad, strongest with a full tank
  • Fine cracking on the hose or a stiff, hardened section you can feel by pinching
  • Bogging on climbs, lean surging, or the engine acting starved with fuel still aboard
  • Grit packed into a wet ring at a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried

On a gravity-fed machine, head pressure from a full tank is what reveals a weak joint, so run the check with the tank filled and the quad on level ground.

Getting the Old Hose Off the 450

Turn the fuel valve to off, then open the float bowl drain screw and let the carburetor empty through its overflow tube into the pan. Remove the seat and the bodywork covering the tank outlet and carburetor inlet, working around the EPS assembly and its wiring rather than reaching blindly past it. Photograph the routing and every clip before you disturb anything.

Slide the clamps back along the hose so they clear both fittings, break the varnish bond at each barb with a gentle twist, and draw the hose straight off. A hose fused by years of service should be slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away rather than levered off, because the valve spigot and carburetor inlet bend more easily than they look. As a 4WD machine, this Grizzly threads its line past front differential hardware and extra frame crossmembers, so map those clearance points before the old hose is fully out.

Fitting the New Hose and Sealing It

Cut the replacement to the original length using the old piece as a template. Extra hose sags into the frame, chafes a crossmember, or drifts toward exhaust heat, and each of those brings you back to this job sooner. Push each end fully onto its barb and install it dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone anywhere on the sealing surface, since any lubricant there gives fuel a route past the clamp that no amount of tightening will close. Soften a tight end in hot water for a few seconds instead.

Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, snug without cutting into the rubber. Put the hose back through its factory clips, keep it away from the steering hardware and the front drive, and change the inline filter now if it looks dark or holds sediment, orienting the flow arrow toward the carburetor.

Final Leak Test

Open the valve and let the machine stand several minutes with a full tank so both joints carry real head pressure. Blot each connection with a clean pale rag and look for amber staining rather than waiting for a drip, because a slow weep marks cloth long before it forms a drop. When the static check is clean, start the engine and inspect once more at idle while heat and vibration surface anything the still test hid.

Finish with a short ride, shut down, and check both ends a final time before the plastics go back on. A new hose restores fuel supply but does nothing for metering, so if the stumble persists with fresh line and a clean filter, look next at float level and jetting inside the carburetor.
