One short piece of rubber stands between the tank and the carburetor on a 2014 Grizzly 350 4x4, and when it lets go, the whole machine stops being useful. That hose costs very little, takes about an hour to change, and quietly prevents both the fuel leak and the mysterious bogging that owners often chase through the carburetor first.
Fuel System Confirmation for This 350
Sort out the fuel system before you plan the job. The 2014 Grizzly 350 runs a carburetor fed by a manual valve at the tank, with a single rubber line dropping to the carburetor inlet under gravity and a drain screw threaded into the float bowl underneath. There is no fuel pump cycling when you turn the key, no pressure held anywhere in the circuit, and no filter buried in the tank. On a fuel-injected utility quad you would begin by pulling a pump fuse and cranking the engine to relieve pressure, and you might have to release a plastic quick-connect coupler rather than a clamp. None of that is part of this repair.
Four-wheel drive affects the geography slightly. The front differential and drive shaft occupy space under the frame, so the hose route runs a touch longer than on a two-wheel-drive version and passes an extra clip or clearance point along the way. Note the routing while the original hose is still in place.
Where the Rubber Loses Its Life
Fuel hose degrades on both surfaces at once. From the outside, heat cycling drives off the plasticizers that keep the compound soft. The hose stiffens, stops flexing with the chassis, and vibration converts fine surface crazing into real cracks, almost always at the tightest bend below the valve. Dry climates make it worse, because arid air pulls moisture from the hose wall and hardens it faster than a humid environment would.
From the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline works on the liner. Alcohol draws water into the fuel and degrades the inner surface, softening it so it sheds fine material toward the carburetor jets. Fuel that sits for months while the machine rests leaves gum and varnish behind as the volatile fractions evaporate, which narrows the bore and cements the hose to its barbs. This is ordinary wear on a decade-old hose, not a fault in the design.
Early Indicators to Take Seriously
Watch for any of the following:
- A puddle or wet patch beneath the quad after it has been parked for a few hours
- A gasoline odor around the tank that hangs on even with the valve closed
- Cracks, splits, or a chalky bleached look on the hose surface
- Hose that feels rigid when pinched, or soft and swollen right at the fittings
- Bogging under throttle, hesitation on climbs, or lean surging that mimics an empty tank
- A ring of caked dirt at a barb where fuel has been weeping and drying
The performance symptoms deserve equal weight with the leaks. A hose narrowed by varnish or collapsed internally supplies plenty for idle and comes up short the moment the engine wants real volume, which is exactly when a working 4x4 needs it.
Materials, Containment, and Airflow
Have all of this staged first:
- Fuel-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter, cut long for trimming
- New clamps or spring clips, since original clips have lost their tension
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A sealed, approved fuel container plus a shallow catch pan
- Screwdrivers, pliers, sockets for the seat and plastics, and a sharp knife
- Clean rags and a work light for tracing the hose under the frame
Ventilation is the part not to shortcut. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downhill and gathers at floor level where water heater pilots, battery chargers, and outlets sit. Push the quad outside if the weather allows; if you must stay in the garage, open the door completely and shut off anything that cycles or sparks. Cap the drained fuel the moment you finish pouring and keep an extinguisher one step away.
Disconnecting the Old Hose
Turn the fuel valve to OFF. Remove the seat and any panel blocking the tank underside, slide the catch pan under the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties through the overflow tube, and close the screw again. The line now holds almost nothing, which is the practical advantage a carbureted machine gives you.
Slide the clamp at the carburetor inlet well back along the hose. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond, then walk it off the barb with steady pressure. If hardened rubber refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with the blade and peel it away instead of prying against the aluminum fitting. Handle the valve end the same way, working the hose free of each clip and past the front drive components rather than dragging it out. Take a look at the valve screen for accumulated sediment while you can see it — that screen is the serviceable filter here, while an injected quad keeps its filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly.
Setting the New Line in Place
Match the new hose to the old one, mark it, and cut square. Extra length is a liability rather than a spare: on a 4x4 slack can drift toward the front drive shaft or a hot exhaust surface, and a raised loop can trap an air pocket in a gravity feed. Press each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and assemble everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel fitting, because a lubricated barb will not seal and vibration slowly walks the hose off. Dip a stiff hose end in hot water for a few seconds if it resists.
Position the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly — enough grip that the hose stays put, not enough to score the rubber. Route the line through its original clips with a continuous downhill slope, confirm clearance from the differential hardware and exhaust, and tug both ends to be certain they are captive.
Wet Check, Then Ride
Open the fuel valve and stand there for a full minute with a clean, dry rag under each connection, looking for the faintest discoloration. Start the engine, let it idle while the float bowl refills and the motor warms, then inspect both joints and the ground beneath the machine. Snap the throttle a few times to work the system and take one more look with your light, especially where the hose passes the front driveline. When everything reads dry, reinstall the plastics and seat, clean up any spillage, and dispose of the old hose and drained fuel properly. Your 2014 Grizzly 350 4x4 will start easier and pull cleaner for the effort.
