Judging the Condition of the Existing Hose
Lift the seat and follow the line from the tank outlet toward the throttle body. Pinch it at intervals with a gloved hand. Sound hose compresses readily and springs back; a length that feels hard, will not deform, or crunches faintly under pressure has lost its plasticizers and is on borrowed time. Flex the hose gently at each bend and watch for hairline crazing that opens up under the flex and closes again when released.
Concentrate on the bends and the spots where the hose passes a retaining clip. Those are the flex and abrasion points, and they always fail ahead of the straight sections. A chalky white bloom on the surface, a stiff patch near a fitting, or dust stuck to a damp ring at a joint all argue for replacement. Given how inexpensive the part is against the cost of a leak, err toward changing it.

The Mechanics of Deterioration
Two processes work on the hose at once. Heat cycling drives the softening compounds out of the rubber over years of warm-ups and cool-downs, leaving a wall that has gone stiff and slightly glassy and can no longer move with the chassis. Vibration from field and trail work then opens hairline splits at every bend and drives them deeper.
Ethanol handles the interior. E10 pump gasoline draws moisture out of the air, and a KingQuad standing through a long off-season with that blend inside slowly loses inner liner material to the alcohol and water combination. Storage climate matters too, because dry, arid air pulls residual moisture from the rubber and hardens hoses years earlier than humid conditions would. The end result is a line brittle outside, softened inside, and quietly shedding particulate downstream.
Symptoms, Parts, and Fuel Safety
A failing line typically shows up as a gasoline odor near the seat that lingers after shutdown, a damp stain or shallow puddle beneath the frame overnight, visible cracking or chalky discoloration, or an engine that bogs under load and behaves as though the tank is nearly dry. Because the circuit is pressurized, a pinhole often sprays a mist that evaporates before it drips, so a persistent smell over a dry floor is meaningful on its own.
Have this ready before you start:
- Gloves and eye protection
- A drain pan and a sealed, fuel-rated container
- Injection-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
- New clamps of the correct style, plus a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is fitted
- Line-clamping pliers, required in the absence of a fuel valve
- Metric hand tools, a razor knife, clean rags, and a bright light
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools at floor level, where it can travel across a shop to a pilot light or a sparking motor. Work outdoors or immediately inside a fully open door, shut off water heaters and space heaters, unplug chargers, and keep a dry chemical extinguisher within reach. Drained fuel goes into a sealed container, not an open pan.
Relieving Pressure and Pulling the Line
Remove the fuel pump fuse or unplug its relay, crank the starter until the engine stumbles and dies on the fuel left in the rail, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Lift the seat and take off the front fender sections and side panels blocking the tank outlet and the hose route toward the throttle body.
Slide your pan into position and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, because a depressurized hose still holds fuel that will run out when it separates. Move any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. On a quick-connect coupler, depress both locking tabs squarely and pull straight off in line with the fitting; angling it splits collars that have grown brittle with age. Twist a stuck hose end gently on the barb to break the varnish bond, and if it holds fast, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away rather than damaging the fitting.
Photograph the routing before the hose is fully out. Four-wheel-drive brings a front differential and extra frame structure, and the power steering assembly shares that forward space, so the line follows a slightly longer path with more clearance points than a two-wheel-drive quad requires.
Installing the Replacement and Testing It
Cut the new hose to the original length, using the old one as your template. Extra length is not a buffer; it becomes a chafe point on a frame tube or sags toward hot exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, assembling dry throughout. Nothing lubricated goes near a fuel fitting, because grease, oil, or silicone on the sealing face gives pressurized gasoline a path out from under the clamp. Warm water on a tight hose end is the only assembly aid you need.
Set fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly, snug without cutting into the rubber. A self-locking quick-connect at the tank takes no clamp; push until it clicks and then tug firmly to confirm engagement. Reinstall the hose into every original retainer so it holds the path you documented, clear of the driveline and hot surfaces.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off five or six times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while the surrounding area is still clean and dry. Inspect both joints, wipe them, and recheck by fingertip.
