The AXi badge on the tank of your 2014 KingQuad 500 is the first thing to understand before a wrench ever touches this machine. It stands for the fuel injection system Suzuki fitted to this 493cc single, which means there is no petcock lever tucked under the tank waiting to shut off flow. Fuel sits in the line under pump pressure any time the key has been on, and the pump itself lives inside the tank rather than bolted to the frame. Every step below is shaped by that reality.

Confirming What You Are Plumbing

On this generation of KingQuad, an electric pump module drops into the top of the fuel tank and feeds a short, reinforced hose that runs forward and up to the throttle body. The strainer and filter element ride inside that same in-tank module, so the visible hose is purely a delivery line with nothing serviceable hiding in the middle of it. Because the 500AXi is a 4x4 with electric power steering, the run also has to clear the front driveshaft tunnel and the steering unit's wiring, which is a slightly busier path than a two-wheel-drive quad would present. Trace the hose end to end with a flashlight before you disturb anything.

What Actually Kills a Fuel Hose

Rubber does not fail from use so much as from time. The compounds that keep a fuel hose supple slowly migrate out of the wall, and once that happens the hose stops flexing and starts fracturing. Heat cycling off the cylinder head accelerates it, and riders in dry desert or high-plains climates see it happen fastest because low humidity draws moisture out of the outer jacket year round. A hose on a machine of this vintage has had a decade of that treatment.

Ethanol-blended pump gas works the opposite direction, attacking the inner liner. When a KingQuad sits for a season with E10 in the system, the alcohol pulls in moisture and slowly softens the liner from inside while the exterior continues to harden and craze. The result is a hose that can look acceptable from the outside while shedding particles toward your injector. Age alone is reason enough to plan the swap.

Symptoms Worth Catching Early

  • A gasoline smell around the seat area that lingers after shutdown, when the system still holds residual pressure
  • A damp patch or a small puddle on the skid plate or garage floor beneath the tank
  • Hairline cracks, a chalky gray surface, or a section that feels stiff and glassy when pinched
  • A dust-caked ring at either fitting, which is dried evidence of slow weeping
  • The engine stumbling under throttle, surging at steady cruise, or acting starved when the tank gets low

Keep in mind that a pressurized leak on an injected machine does not always drip. Fuel can atomize off a pinhole and evaporate before it reaches the ground, so a persistent smell with no visible puddle still deserves attention.

Gathering Tools and Setting Up Safely

Have all of this within reach before the first fitting comes apart:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils quickly
  • A sealed metal or fuel-rated container plus a drain pan
  • Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor hose
  • Fresh clamps matched to the fitting style, or a quick-connect release tool if your machine uses a locking coupler at the pump flange
  • Line-clamping pliers, which substitute for the petcock this model does not have
  • A socket set for the seat and side panels, a small flat blade, a razor knife, and plenty of rags

Do this outdoors or with the door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation low in the space matters far more than a cracked window overhead. Keep heaters, grinders, and anything with a pilot light out of the area entirely, and disconnect the battery negative once you have relieved pressure.

Getting the Old Hose Out

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay first, then crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls and refuses to catch. That burns off line pressure and turns a potential spray into a manageable dribble. Shut the key off, disconnect the battery, and remove the seat and the plastic panels that shroud the tank on the 500AXi. Slide a pan underneath and drape a rag over each fitting as you open it, because residual fuel will still come out.

Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before you try to free anything. If you find a plastic quick-connect at the pump outlet, squeeze the release tabs squarely and pull straight off — never lever it sideways, since those collars grow brittle with age. Old hose that has varnished onto a barb should be twisted gently to break the bond, or slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away rather than yanked hard enough to strain the throttle body spigot. Photograph the routing and every clip before the hose is fully clear, paying attention to where it passes the front differential hardware and the power steering harness.

Fitting the Replacement

Cut the new hose to match the old one exactly. Extra length is not insurance; it lets the line sag into the front driveline or rub a frame edge until it chafes through. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a path to creep along the sealing surface, so nothing goes on those fittings. A quick dip of the hose end in hot water softens it enough to slide on without help.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each spigot and snug them evenly, firm enough to seal without crushing the wall. If the tank side uses a self-locking coupler, push until you hear it click, then pull back firmly to verify it has latched; that connection wants no clamp at all. Return the hose to every original clip so it stays away from the exhaust and the driveshaft.

Pressure Test and Final Checks

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, giving you a dry-engine look at both joints. Wipe them clean, then watch for the faintest bead of fuel forming. Start the engine, let it idle, and check once more with a fresh rag, then hold a little throttle and look again. Only after several minutes of clean running should the plastics and seat go back on.

If fuel delivery still feels soft after a leak-free install, the next suspect is the in-tank filter and strainer on the pump module. A new hose cannot fix a restricted filter, and on the 500AXi that component is only reachable by pulling the pump assembly out of the tank.
