When a Running Problem Is Really a Hose Problem
Plenty of owners chase a stumble for weeks before they think about fuel line. The 2014 KingQuad 400FSi will bog under load, hesitate coming off idle, or surge lean at steady throttle when its fuel supply is compromised, and those symptoms look enough like an ignition or intake issue to send you down the wrong road. If the hose between the tank and the throttle body is old, hard, or collapsing internally, it belongs at the top of the suspect list rather than the bottom.
Two other clues seal it. A gasoline smell that lingers around the machine after shutdown means fuel is escaping somewhere while the system still holds pressure. A drip mark, damp streak, or fuel stain beneath the frame confirms it. On a pressurized injected system, a small leak sometimes atomizes and evaporates before it drips, so the smell can arrive well before the puddle does.
Fuel System Confirmation
The FSi badge marks this as the fuel-injected KingQuad 400, paired with the five speed semi-automatic transmission and 4x4 drive. Injection changes your approach in a specific way: there is no petcock under the tank and no fuel valve to shut, because a pump inside the tank supplies a pressurized hose rather than gravity feeding a carburetor. That hose stays pressurized after shutdown, which is why bleeding it down comes before touching a single clamp. Line clamping pliers serve as the shutoff you do not otherwise have.
Drive layout plays a supporting role. The front differential hardware, driveshaft, and extra frame bracing on a 4x4 crowd the space the hose has to pass through, so the factory clips and clearance points keep the line away from exhaust heat and moving parts. That run would be shorter and more open on a two-wheel-drive chassis. Document the routing with photos before anything comes loose.
The Mechanics of Hose Failure
Fuel hose degrades on a timeline rather than an odometer. Plasticizers give the rubber its flexibility, and they migrate out of the hose wall slowly and permanently. When enough have gone, the hose cracks instead of bending, and heat cycles from the air and oil cooled single accelerate the change. Add the chassis flex and vibration a utility quad absorbs across rough ground, and those hairline cracks deepen into leak paths.
Environment sets the pace. Dry, low humidity regions pull moisture out of the rubber and harden it from the outside in, which is why two identical machines can be in wildly different condition at the same age. Ethanol blended pump gas comes at the liner from the inside, absorbing water and breaking down the rubber whenever fuel sits still in the line for a stretch. The upshot is that a hose can look presentable on the surface and still be shedding material toward the injector, so age itself is a legitimate reason to replace it.
Assembling Tools and Managing the Fumes
- Rubber or nitrile gloves and safety glasses
- Hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- Fresh clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is used
- Line clamping pliers for any low pressure section
- An approved sealed fuel container and a shallow catch pan
- Socket set, small flat blade screwdriver, razor knife, and clean rags
Take the gasoline seriously. Its vapor is denser than air, so it settles across the floor and travels along it, right into water heater pilots, propane heaters, and charger contacts. Work outdoors or with the shop door completely open, get air moving low in the space rather than only overhead, and shut down every source of flame or spark before you start. Keep an extinguisher within reach, cap the fuel container between pours, and get fresh air if the fumes become noticeable in your throat.
Taking the Line Out
Relieve pressure before anything else. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse block, crank the engine until it stalls from starvation, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Lift the seat and remove any bodywork covering the tank outlet and the hose run heading to the throttle body.
Position the catch pan and lay a rag across the joint you are opening, since residual fuel stays in the hose even with pressure gone. Slide worm gear or spring clamps well back before disturbing anything. On a locking quick-connect, depress both tabs evenly and pull the coupler straight off, avoiding sideways leverage that cracks aged plastic collars. Break the varnish bond on a stubborn barb with a light twist, and if the hose stays welded on, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away rather than damaging a fitting you plan to reuse.
Fitting the New Hose Properly
Cut the replacement to match the removed piece exactly. Extra hose ends up chafing against a frame tube or interfering at full steering lock, and a short piece pulls on its fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and do it all dry. Grease, oil, silicone, and sealant stay away from fuel connections without exception, because lubricant on the sealing surface is precisely what allows pressurized fuel to creep past a clamp. Hot water is the only acceptable aid for a tight hose end.
Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly to firm rather than crushing the rubber. A self-locking quick-connect needs no clamp, only a push until it clicks and a hard tug to confirm the latch. Route the hose back through every original clip, then verify real clearance from the exhaust and the front driveline before reinstalling plastics.
Testing Before the First Ride
Refit the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line while everything is still dry, which is the best possible condition for spotting a weep. Wipe every connection with a clean pale rag so a trace of fuel is unmistakable. Start the engine and inspect at idle, then take a slow lap and check once more with the engine warm.
Keep one architectural detail in mind. On the injected KingQuad 400FSi the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline where you can service it on the hose. Replacing the line does nothing for a restricted filter, so if the machine still runs starved after a dry, secure installation, that assembly is your next stop.
