Parts and Tools to Have in Hand

- Sockets, a plastic trim tool, plenty of rags, and a fresh razor blade
The pressure rating deserves emphasis. Carburetor-grade hose is designed for gravity or low-pressure feed and will balloon, weep, or split on this system. Diameter matters just as much, because oversized hose will never seal correctly on a barb regardless of clamp torque.
Injection Sets the Procedure
The 2014 Touring 850 EPS is fuel injected, so there is no petcock to close and no float bowl to drain. An electric pump inside the tank feeds a pressurized line up to the throttle body, and it holds pressure long after shutdown. The job therefore opens electrically: pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank until the engine quits, switch the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Skipping that step is how people end up with fuel across a garage floor. Note as well that the filter is built into the in-tank pump module, so the visible hose carries no filter you can change while you are in there.
Handling Gasoline Sensibly
Fuel vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, exactly where you kneel and reach when working under the front of the quad. An open window overhead does very little about that. Roll the machine outside if the weather cooperates, or raise the garage door completely and keep it open for the duration. Extinguish water heater pilots, unplug battery chargers, and set aside grinders and any other spark source before opening the first fitting. Keep captured fuel in a sealed container rather than an open pan evaporating into the space, and have an appropriate extinguisher nearby.
Understanding the Failure
Fuel hose ages chemically. Plasticizers in the compound keep it pliable, and heat cycling from the ProStar 850 twin drives them out over years of riding. Soft, springy hose becomes firm and then glassy, and once compliance is gone, the flex it used to absorb turns into cracks at the bends and in the compressed sections behind each clamp. Dry, arid climates speed this up by drawing moisture out of the hose wall and hardening it from the surface inward. Working the other direction, ethanol-blended fuel absorbs moisture and gradually degrades the inner liner, which does the most damage across long stretches when the machine sits with fuel standing in the line.
Verifying the Hose Is the Problem
Inspect before you replace anything. Gasoline odor around the seats immediately after shutdown is usually the first indicator, followed by a damp stain on the skid plate or a dust-caked ring at a fitting where fuel has been seeping and evaporating. Pinch along the hose looking for a hard, chalky, or crazed section that no longer rebounds. From the seat, watch for bogging when the throttle opens with a passenger and cargo aboard, a lean stumble at steady speed, or a sense of fuel starvation at higher rpm. Because pressurized fuel often atomizes before it drips, an odor with a dry floor beneath still justifies a full inspection.
Removal, Installation, and the Leak Check
With pressure bled, take off both seats and the adjacent panels so the entire run from the tank flange to the throttle body is exposed. The two-up Touring frame is longer than a standard Sportsman, so expect a longer hose and more retaining clips, and on this 4x4 chassis the routing has to clear front differential hardware along with the electric power steering assembly. Photograph the layout and each clip before anything separates.
Slide the pan into place and cover each joint with a rag before opening it, since a bled line still holds fuel. Push clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the barb. Quick-connect collars stiffen with age, so press the tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off without any sideways leverage. Varnished hose ends should be slit lengthwise and peeled off rather than twisted.
Trim the new hose to the original length so nothing chafes on a frame edge or drifts into hot exhaust shielding. Seat each end fully onto its barb, dry, with no grease, oil, or silicone near the sealing surface, since lubricant there is precisely how pressurized fuel escapes. Warm water eases a tight fit. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten evenly. A self-locking quick-connect should click and hold against a firm tug with no clamp added. Restore every original clip so the hose sits where it belongs.
Then prove it. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line. Inspect both joints while the engine is cold and still, wiping each with a clean rag and watching for fuel forming. Start the twin, let it idle, and inspect again with everything hot and vibrating. Only after several minutes of confirmed dry running should the bodywork and seats go back on. If fuel delivery still disappoints, look next at the in-tank pump and filter module.
