What Fuel Injection Changes About This Job
On a carbureted quad you close a valve and let gravity drain the line. Here, the hose stays pressurized after the key comes out, so the sequence starts with relieving pressure: pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly until it stops firing, switch the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Line-clamping pliers do the job a petcock would, pinching off any low-pressure or vent section that would otherwise drain while you work.
Fitting style also differs from an older machine. Rather than a plain barb with a clamp at both ends, a 550 EPS of this generation may use a self-locking quick-connect coupler at one end, sealing on an internal O-ring and needing no clamp at all. Access and Line Routing
Plan on removing the seat and the side plastics. The Mechanics of Hose Deterioration
Fuel line stays flexible because of plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those compounds slowly migrate out with years of heat cycling. The remaining material is hard and glassy, and a hose in that state cannot absorb movement. On a heavy two-up chassis ridden over rough ground, vibration concentrates that brittleness at the bends until fine cracks open there.
Dry regions shorten hose life measurably, because arid air constantly pulls moisture out of the rubber and accelerates the hardening from the outside in. Ethanol-blended pump gas comes at the liner from within, drawing water into the fuel and slowly breaking the inner wall down, particularly during long periods when the machine sits with a partial tank. Gum and shed liner material can then restrict flow inside a hose that still looks perfectly acceptable.
Recognizing a Line About to Let Go

Then address the space. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor, exactly where heaters, water heater pilots, and extension cords tend to be, so a cracked window overhead does nothing for you. Work outdoors or with the main door fully open so air moves at ground level, clear every ignition source out of the area, and keep the fuel you drain sealed rather than sitting open in a pan.
Removal, Fitting, and the Leak Check
With pressure relieved and the bodywork off, set the pan beneath the work and drape a rag over the first joint before opening it, since a depressurized hose still holds fuel. Slide each clamp well back along the hose first. Release a quick-connect by pressing both tabs evenly and pulling straight off, never levering sideways. Twist a hose bonded to its barb by varnish rather than pulling hard, and slit a stuck end lengthwise with a knife so the fitting survives.
Cut the new hose to the original length and push each end on dry until it bottoms out. Keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely away from the fittings, because lubricant on a sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a path past the clamp or the O-ring. Soften a tight end briefly in hot water if needed. Place clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten them evenly, and push a self-locking coupler until it clicks before tugging to confirm it latched. Return the hose to every original clip.
Finish by reinstalling the fuse, Reconnecting the battery, and cycling the ignition on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while the joints are clean and dry. Wipe both fittings, start the Sportsman Touring 550 EPS, and watch at idle for a slow bead as much as an outright drip. Blip the throttle and check again, then let it run several minutes before the plastics go back on. A quick look under the machine after your first short ride confirms the connections hold once the chassis has worked over real terrain.
