Ask a group of riders how they found a bad fuel line and most will describe the same moment: a gasoline smell in the garage, or an engine that suddenly acted like the tank was empty at half a tank. Both point at the same part. On a 2014 Scrambler XP 850 H.O. EPS, replacing that hose is a manageable job as long as you respect the fact that this is a pressurized injection system.

Start by Killing the Pressure

The high-output ProStar 850 in this Scrambler is fuel injected. An electric pump inside the tank pressurizes the supply line running to the throttle body, so there is no petcock under the tank and no way to close off flow by hand. That pressure lingers after shutdown, which is why the very first action in this job is electrical rather than mechanical. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls from lack of supply, switch off the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

Lift the seat while you are there and identify the pump and sender module bolted through the top of the tank with its wiring connector attached. The hose leaving that module commonly terminates in a plastic quick-connect collar rather than a plain barb, which affects how it comes apart. This is also an all-wheel-drive machine with power steering, so the front differential, its supporting frame structure, and the steering components crowd the hose corridor and leave you less room than a two-wheel-drive quad would.

Why Rubber Fuel Line Has an Expiration Date

The flexibility in a fuel hose comes from additives blended into the rubber, and those additives leave the material steadily over the years. As the hose hardens it stops absorbing the vibration and thermal movement it was designed for, and cracks develop where it bends or where a clamp squeezes it. Heat from the twin and thousands of miles of rough ground both hasten that decline.

Separately, ethanol-blended fuel works on the liner. Alcohol pulls moisture into the system, and a hose that sits full of E10 through a long idle stretch ends up softened inside with gum deposits that can release later and travel downstream. In dry, low-humidity regions the outside cracks earlier than average because the hose wall loses moisture to the air. The two processes together explain why a hose that looks passable can already be unreliable.

Confirming the Diagnosis

Run down this list before ordering parts:

  • Fuel pooled on the skid plate, or a dried stain on the concrete under the machine
  • A gasoline odor around the tank area, most noticeable immediately after you shut the engine down
  • Visible cracking, a chalky surface, or a section that has gone stiff where the rest still flexes
  • Bogging under load, a stumble on hard throttle, or behavior that mimics an empty tank at half full
  • A ring of caked dirt at a fitting, left behind by fuel weeping and drying repeatedly

Remember that a pressurized leak does not always drip. Escaping fuel can atomize and evaporate before reaching the ground, so a persistent smell with no puddle still deserves investigation.

Parts, Tools, and Working Safely With Gasoline

Have all of this ready before anything is opened:

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves
  • An approved sealed container for captured fuel, never an open pail
  • New hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the original inside diameter
  • Clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-disconnect tool if the tank fitting uses a locking collar
  • Line-clamping pliers to pinch off any section, standing in for the petcock this model lacks
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and side plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and a good supply of rags

Ventilation deserves genuine attention here. Gasoline vapor is denser than air, so it sinks and collects at floor level exactly where water heater pilots and shop heaters sit. Roll the Scrambler outside if conditions allow. If you must work indoors, open the overhead door completely and set a fan at ground level moving air out of the space. Keep all ignition sources well clear and place an extinguisher within a single step of the job.

Working the Old Hose Free

Remove the seat and the panels covering the tank so the entire line is visible from module to throttle body. Position a drain pan beneath the lowest point and wrap a rag around each fitting before opening it, since a bled hose still holds liquid that will run out the moment the joint breaks.

Slide any clamp several inches down the hose before you disturb the connection. Quick-connect fittings need both locking tabs squeezed evenly and a straight axial pull, never a sideways pry, because aged plastic collars crack under that load. When varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, a gentle twist normally breaks the seal, and if it does not, cut the hose lengthwise and peel it away rather than risking damage to the fitting. Photograph the routing, every clip, and every clearance point around the front driveline before the old line is entirely out.

Installation, Then a Real Leak Test

Cut the new hose to match the original length. Leaving it long invites chafe on a frame edge or contact with rotating driveline parts, and neither shows up until it is a problem. Push both ends fully onto their fittings until they bottom against the shoulder, and assemble dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel connection, because a lubricant film on the sealing surface is exactly what lets pressurized fuel creep past a clamp. If a hose end resists, soften it in hot water for a few seconds.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal but not enough to deform the hose. A self-locking quick-connect at the tank pushes on until it clicks and should receive no clamp; verify the latch with a solid pull. Restore the hose to every factory clip so it stays clear of hot exhaust and moving components.

Finish by proving the repair. Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line. Wipe both joints with a clean light-colored rag and watch for any stain returning. Then start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and inspect once more with the system hot and under full working pressure. Reassemble the plastics only after the connections stay dry.

Keep one platform detail in mind as you close up. On this injected Scrambler the fuel filter is integrated with the in-tank pump assembly rather than sitting inline where you can reach it. A new hose corrects a leak and nothing else, so continued fuel starvation after a clean install points inside the tank.
