How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2014 Polaris Scrambler XP 1000 EPS

A decade of heat cycles, trail vibration, and pump gas takes a measurable toll on rubber. If your 2014 Scrambler XP 1000 EPS is showing its age anywhere, the fuel hose is a reasonable place to start looking, and it is one of the few high-consequence parts an intermediate home mechanic can renew in an afternoon.
What Actually Destroys a Fuel Hose
Rubber fuel line has a service life measured in years, not miles. The compounds blended in to keep it flexible slowly work their way out of the material, and the hose transitions from pliable to firm to genuinely brittle. Once the wall has hardened, the flexing it has always absorbed starts producing cracks instead, typically right where a clamp bites or where the line curves past a frame tube. Radiant heat from the ProStar 1000 twin only speeds that clock.
Ethanol works from the opposite side. E10 pump fuel draws atmospheric moisture into the system, and when a Scrambler of this vintage sits between seasons with fuel in the hose, the inner liner softens and gum residue builds. In arid, low-humidity regions the exterior deteriorates faster than average, because dry air steadily pulls moisture out of the hose wall. A line under attack from both directions can present a perfectly presentable exterior while shedding material toward the injectors.
Injected, Not Carbureted — and Why That Matters First
Everything about the removal sequence hinges on this: the XP 1000 EPS runs electronic fuel injection. Fuel is pushed forward by an electric pump inside the tank, not pulled down by gravity, so there is no petcock to reach under and close. The supply hose holds pressure after shutdown and typically terminates in a plastic quick-connect collar at the tank rather than a simple barb.
Relieving that pressure is the actual first step of the job. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stumbles and dies from starvation, then turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Only after that does anything get loosened. This is also an all-wheel-drive chassis with electronic power steering, so the front differential, its supporting frame structure, and the steering hardware crowd the hose corridor. The procedure is unchanged, but plan for less working room than a two-wheel-drive quad allows.
The Warning Signs Riders Miss
A hose rarely blows out without giving notice. Run through this list whenever something feels off:
- A puddle or damp streak under the machine after it has been sitting
- Gasoline you can smell around the tank, most noticeable in the minutes right after shutdown
- Hairline checking, a chalky bloom on the surface, or a stretch that has gone stiff to the pinch
- The engine bogging under throttle, breaking up at higher rpm, or acting like fuel is running out when the gauge disagrees
- A dirt-encrusted band at a fitting, which is what fuel leaves behind when it seeps and dries over and over
An important nuance on injected machines: pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole tends to atomize and disappear rather than drip. A convincing gasoline smell with a dry floor still means something.
Assembling the Right Parts and Making the Area Safe
Stage the whole job before opening the system:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, since gasoline strips skin oils and carries solvents through it
- A sealed, fuel-rated container for whatever drains out
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- Correct-style clamps and a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank fitting uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers, filling the role the missing petcock would otherwise play
- Sockets for the seat and plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and more rags than you think you need
Give ventilation real consideration. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it settles across the floor and finds pilot lights, shop heaters, and anything else near ground level. Outdoors is best. Indoors means the overhead door fully open and a fan low to the ground exhausting air out of the space, with no smoking, no grinding, no battery charging in the vicinity, and an extinguisher within reach.
Freeing the Old Line
With the system bled and the battery disconnected, take off the seat and the panels standing between you and the tank so the entire run from pump module to throttle body is in view. Slide a catch pan beneath the lowest point and hold a rag around each fitting as you break it loose, because a depressurized hose still carries a slug of liquid fuel.
Any spring clip or worm-gear clamp should be walked several inches down the hose before the joint moves. Quick-connect couplers need both tabs depressed squarely and a straight axial pull; eleven-year-old plastic snaps readily if you lever it sideways. Where fuel varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, work it loose with a gentle twist, and if that fails, slit the hose lengthwise with a blade and peel it off. Preserving the fitting is worth far more than preserving the hose you are throwing away. Take photographs of the routing, every clip, and every clearance point around the front driveline before the line is fully out.
Building the New Connection
Measure the replacement against the old hose and cut it to match. Extra length is not a safety margin; a long hose rubs a frame edge or migrates toward moving driveline parts. Press each end onto its fitting until it seats fully against the shoulder, and do it dry. Nothing lubricating belongs on a fuel joint, since even a thin film of grease or silicone gives pressurized fuel a channel to escape past the clamp. A fifteen-second dip in hot water softens a tight hose end enough to slide on unaided.
Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and bring them up evenly, snug enough to seal without collapsing the hose. A self-locking quick-connect at the tank simply pushes until it clicks; verify the latch with a firm pull and add no clamp. Reseat the hose in every factory clip and guide so it stays clear of hot exhaust surfaces and the front driveline.
Confirming No Leaks Before the First Ride
Refit the fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle spins the pump and loads the line with pressure, which lets you inspect both joints under real conditions with the engine cold. Wipe them with a clean light-colored rag and watch for any stain forming. Fire the engine next and let it idle for several minutes, checking a final time with the system hot. The plastics and seat go on only after both connections stay bone dry.
Worth remembering as you close up: the fuel filter on this Scrambler lives inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than sitting inline where you can swap it. Fresh hose corrects a hose problem and nothing more. If the engine still behaves as though it is starving after a leak-free install, the in-tank module is the logical next stop.
