Every good repair starts with correctly identifying what you are working on. The 2014 Foreman 500 ES is a fuel-injected machine, so the hose between the tank and the throttle body is part of a pressurized circuit supplied by an in-tank pump. There is no petcock valve to close and no float bowl to drain. That single distinction determines the tooling you need and the order in which you do everything.

How Fuel Hose Deteriorates

Rubber fuel line ages primarily through heat cycling. Each time the engine warms up and cools back down, a fraction of the plasticizer that keeps the compound flexible migrates out. Over enough cycles the wall becomes stiff and glassy, and a stiff hose no longer absorbs the vibration that a working utility quad produces. Instead it develops cracks, most often at bends and directly beneath clamps.

Where and how the machine lives changes the pace. In dry, low-humidity regions, arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens the exterior faster than it would in humid country. From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gasoline attracts water and slowly degrades the inner liner. When a Foreman sits unused for months with that fuel in the system, the liner can soften and shed material while gum forms throughout, and on this injected model that debris collects in the filter housed inside the tank rather than in a serviceable inline unit.

Confirming the Hose Is the Problem

Pressurized systems hide small leaks well, because escaping fuel often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip. Work through this list:

  • Sniff around the tank and frame shortly after shutdown, when the circuit still holds pressure and any weep is at its most obvious
  • Look for a wet spot or puddle on the skid plate or the floor, which indicates a larger breach
  • Pinch the hose along its length and feel for hardened, glassy stretches or a chalky surface
  • Inspect bends and clamp locations closely for fine cracking
  • Check each fitting for a dust-caked ring, the signature of dried fuel seepage
  • Note whether the engine has been bogging under load, stumbling on hard throttle, or feeling starved at higher rpm

Relieving Pressure and Setting Up

Pull the fuel pump fuse first. Crank the engine for a few seconds so it consumes the pressure still in the line and stalls on its own, then turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative terminal. This is the step that separates a clean job from a spray of fuel across your workbench, and it takes almost no time.

Have these ready before you open anything:

  • Fuel line rated for injection pressure, matched to the original inside diameter
  • Line-clamping pliers, which do the job the missing petcock would have done
  • New clamps appropriate to the fitting style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if a locking coupler is present
  • Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
  • A lidded drain container, rags, a flat-blade screwdriver, and sockets for the seat and plastics

Now the safety point that actually matters. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it does not float away; it sinks, spreads across the floor, and travels toward any pilot light or heater at that level. Work outdoors or with the overhead door completely open, shut down anything that sparks or burns, and keep the drain container closed between pours.

Taking the Line Off

Remove the seat and the fender panels that block access to the tank outlet and the hose run heading back toward the throttle body. Clamp the tank-side hose with your line-clamping pliers so the fuel standing in the tank stays there while the circuit is open. Slide a drain pan into place and lay a rag over the first joint you plan to separate, since a depressurized line still holds liquid.

Match your technique to the fitting. Worm-gear and spring clamps should be slid well back along the hose before you touch the joint. A quick-connect coupler needs its locking tabs depressed squarely followed by a straight pull — levering to the side snaps collars that have hardened with age. On a plain barb, rotate the hose a quarter turn to release the varnish bond, and if it stays put, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it away instead of prying on the fitting.

Capture the routing with a photo before the hose comes fully out. This is a 4x4 machine, which means front differential and driveshaft hardware occupy space a two-wheel-drive chassis leaves open, and the line follows particular frame clearance points and clips as a result. The electric shift ES model also puts shift control wiring in the same area, and the new hose needs to stay clear of it.

Installing the Replacement and Testing Under Pressure

Cut the new hose to match the length of the old piece precisely. A longer hose is not a safer hose; it rubs on frame tubes, kinks where it loops, and can migrate toward hot exhaust. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it seats, and do it completely dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a sealing surface give pressurized fuel a route to escape and let the hose creep off the barb over repeated heat cycles, so nothing slick goes near a fitting. Softening the hose ends in hot water for a few seconds makes them slide on without tools.

Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten them evenly. Where a self-locking quick-connect is used, push until you hear or feel the collar click, then pull firmly to confirm the latch has engaged; that connection is designed to seal without a clamp and should not get one. Restore the hose to its factory clips and guides so it stays clear of the front driveline and the exhaust.

Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, giving you a chance to inspect both joints while everything is still dry. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag and look again with a flashlight. When the circuit holds, start the engine and check the connections at idle, cycling the electric shift through its range as the machine warms to operating temperature. Remember that on this injected Foreman the fuel filter is part of the pump module inside the tank rather than a visible inline part, so lingering delivery complaints after a good hose install point there next.
