You can replace the fuel hose on a 2014 TRX250 Recon ES with a surprisingly short list of equipment. What matters is having all of it in one place before the first clamp moves, because nothing about an open fuel line rewards improvisation.
The Short List
Here is everything the job actually takes:
- Gasoline-rated replacement hose in the Recon ES original inside diameter
- New clamps — factory-style spring clips or small worm-gear clamps
- Nitrile or rubber gloves plus safety glasses
- A sealed, approved fuel container and a wide, shallow drain pan
- Line-clamping pliers, worth having as backup if the petcock seeps past OFF
- A flat-blade screwdriver and a basic socket set for the seat and side panel
- A sharp razor knife, a stack of clean rags, and a good work light
Two notes on the parts. Buy hose specifically rated for gasoline rather than generic tubing, which softens and sheds material once ethanol-blended fuel gets to work on it. And buy new clamps even if the old ones look serviceable, because spring clips more than a decade old have lost the tension that made them work.
Ventilation Is Not Optional
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. It sinks to the floor and spreads outward along the ground rather than rising and dispersing, which means it can travel across a shop to a water heater pilot, an arcing extension cord, or a battery charger. Ventilation at floor level protects you; an open window six feet up does almost nothing.
Roll the quad outside or open the shop door completely and work near the opening. Let the engine cool fully first, since an air-cooled cylinder and exhaust header stay hot long after shutdown. Keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, wear gloves because gasoline pulls the oil out of your skin quickly, and lay used rags outdoors to dry rather than sealing them in a container.
The Fuel Path on This Machine
The 2014 Recon ES is carbureted. Its 229cc air-cooled single receives fuel from a carburetor, and the electric shift system handles gear changes only. No pump pressurizes the line, so there is nothing to bleed down and no relay or fuse to remove before starting — a step that fuel-injected quads require without exception. A petcock beneath the tank gives ON, OFF, and reserve for a positive shutoff, plain clamps hold both hose ends rather than self-locking quick-connect couplers, and the carburetor float bowl has a drain screw underneath. This is also a 2WD chassis with a solid rear axle, so no front differential crowds the hose route and the whole run stays visible once the bodywork is off.
What Went Wrong With the Old Hose
Heat cycling drives plasticizer out of the rubber over the years, leaving hose that feels stiff, looks glazed, and cracks at its tightest bend. Sunlight past the plastics accelerates the surface hardening, and machines living in dry, low-humidity country reach that point earliest because arid air keeps drawing moisture from the hose wall.
Ethanol-blended fuel attacks from the other side. E10 holds water in suspension, and every span of storage with gas standing in the line lets that mixture soften the inner liner and leave gum behind. After a decade of both processes, hose that still looks acceptable can be brittle outside and swollen inside.
Signs You Waited Long Enough
Watch for these:
- A fuel smell around the quad hours after the last ride
- A wet ring or drip pattern under the left side of the engine
- Cracking, a chalky feel, or hose that holds its bend when released
- Grime stuck in a ring at a clamp, the mark of a slow seep
- Bogging under throttle, a lean stumble, or symptoms that mimic an empty tank
Take that final symptom seriously. Gravity is the only thing moving fuel toward the carburetor here, so a hose narrowed by internal swelling can idle cleanly and starve the engine under sustained load without ever leaking.
Removal, Fitting, and Verification
Turn the petcock OFF, remove the seat and left side panel, then slide the pan under the carburetor and back out the float bowl drain screw so the bowl empties through its tube. Retract both clamps, twist each hose end on its barb to break the varnish bond, and pull it free. Slit any hardened end lengthwise with the razor and peel it off instead of prying at the petcock spigot or carburetor inlet, both of which crack far more easily than they look. Note the clips and exhaust clearance as the old hose comes out.
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly, then push each end on dry until it seats against the fitting shoulder. Keep grease, oil, and sealant entirely off the barbs, because lubricant creates a leak path and lets the hose creep off under vibration. Hot water for thirty seconds softens a tight end. Set the clamps just behind each bead, tighten evenly, and route the hose back through its clips.
Close the drain screw, turn the petcock to ON, and watch both joints for a full minute as the bowl refills. Wipe the area dry, start the engine, inspect at idle, then take a short ride and check a third time warm. Only after all three passes come back dry should the panel and seat go back on.
