Replacing the Fuel Hose on a 2014 Honda TRX250 Recon

This entire repair comes down to two fittings. On a 2014 Recon there is a spigot on the petcock at the top and an inlet barb on the carburetor at the bottom, and everything that goes right or wrong in the job happens at those two points. Understand what they are and how the hose is supposed to grip them and the rest is just cutting rubber to length.
A Close Look at the Two Connection Points
The petcock spigot is a small metal tube protruding from the fuel valve on the underside of the tank. It has a raised bead near its tip, and that bead is what actually holds the hose in place; the clamp only keeps the hose from walking off past it. The carburetor inlet at the other end is the same idea in miniature, a short barb with a bead, sitting on the side of the Keihin carburetor body.
Both are more fragile than they look. The petcock is a die-cast assembly and the spigot can snap if you lever a stubborn hose off with a screwdriver, and the carburetor inlet can be bent or broken the same way. Replacing either costs many times what the hose does, which is why the removal technique in this job is always about sacrificing the hose to save the fitting.
What Kind of System This Recon Runs
The 2014 Recon is carbureted, so both of those fittings live in an unpressurized, gravity-fed circuit. A manual petcock with OFF, ON, and RES positions is your shutoff, one short hose spans the gap, and there is no pump anywhere in the path. Turn the valve off and flow stops. On an injected quad the equivalent connection sits in a pressurized line fed by a pump inside the tank, and the pressure must be relieved by pulling the pump fuse and running the engine down before anything is opened. None of that applies to your machine.
The Recon is two-wheel drive, which keeps the span between those fittings short and unobstructed. Pull the seat and the plastic over the tank and both ends are within easy reach. On four-wheel-drive utility quads the hose has to travel around a front differential and additional frame crossmembers, which introduces retaining clips and clearance points that the Recon simply does not have.
Why the Rubber Between Them Fails
Heat cycles from the air-cooled 229cc single steadily drive plasticizers out of the hose, and the rubber goes from springy to stiff to brittle. Once it cannot flex where it bends between the two fittings, that bend concentrates stress and cracks. Dry climates accelerate the process by drawing moisture out of the hose wall from the outside.
From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas attracts water and slowly degrades the hose liner, and fuel that sits motionless for long stretches oxidizes into gum and varnish. That deposit stiffens the hose internally, restricts flow, and sheds fine debris toward the carburetor jets. Both mechanisms run continuously, which is why a hose that looks acceptable can already be finished.
Symptoms and a Quick Inspection List
- Gasoline odor that lingers around the machine hours after shutdown
- A damp patch or slow drip beneath the left side of the engine
- Fine cracking on the outer surface, most often at the bend
- A hard, chalky feel where the hose should still be springy
- A ring of caked dust at either fitting, marking a repeated weep
- Bogging under load or a lean stumble that mimics a nearly empty tank
Materials and Gasoline Handling
Collect gasoline-rated hose in the original inside diameter, two new clamps, gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container with a funnel, a flat-blade screwdriver, pliers, a socket set for the plastics, a razor blade, and rags. Match the inside diameter rather than the outside, since that dimension determines how the hose grips those two beads. Use new clamps, because aged spring clamps have relaxed and worm-gear bands stay deformed after their first hard tightening.
Take the fuel seriously even though the mechanical work is easy. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks off the machine and spreads along the floor until it reaches a water heater pilot, a shop heater, or a charger sitting at ground level. Work outdoors when you can, or open the overhead door fully and shut off anything with a flame in the building. Keep drained fuel capped rather than standing in an open pan, and wear gloves since gasoline strips skin oils in seconds.
Getting the Old Hose Off Both Fittings
Close the petcock. Slide a short piece of hose onto the float bowl drain nipple under the carburetor, run it into your container, and open the drain screw so the low point of the system empties cleanly. Move both clamps well back along the hose. Grip the hose right next to each barb and rotate it a quarter turn in both directions to shear the varnish bond; after that it slides off with almost no pull. If a hose is too hard to rotate, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away in pieces rather than prying, which is exactly how those two fittings survive the job. Photograph the routing before the old hose is fully out.
Fitting the New Hose and Leak Testing
Cut the replacement to match the length of the original so it holds the same easy arc with no kinks and no contact with the exhaust or shift linkage. Warm each end in hot water for a few seconds, then push it fully onto its barb until it seats past the raised bead — that is the point where the connection actually becomes secure. Assemble everything dry, since grease, oil, or silicone on a barb prevents the rubber from gripping the metal and creates a slow weep that no clamp torque will cure. Set the new clamps immediately behind the bead at both ends and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without cutting into the hose wall. Both connections here are clamped barbs, unlike some injected machines where a self-locking quick-connect coupler holds without any clamp.
Open the petcock and let the quad sit for five minutes with the engine off, letting gravity test both joints. Inspect each fitting under bright light, then wipe them with a clean dry rag and check the cloth for fuel. When both stay dry, start the engine and inspect again at idle, because vibration finds a marginal seal that held while stationary. Finish by pulling the petcock screen and rinsing it in clean fuel. That filter is serviceable on your carbureted 2014 Recon, while an injected quad keeps its filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly.
