Owners of the 2014 Rincon 680 often chase a fuel delivery complaint through spark plugs and air filters before ever looking at the hose feeding the throttle body. That hose is the cheapest part in the chain and one of the most likely to have aged out. This walkthrough covers how to confirm it is the problem and how to replace it cleanly on this machine.
Narrowing the Problem Down to the Hose
Start with the evidence that only a fuel line produces. A gasoline smell that appears strongest in the minutes right after you shut the engine off points squarely at a pressurized joint that is not sealing, because the circuit on this injected Rincon stays under pressure once the pump stops. A damp stain on the skid plate or a dark streak running down a frame tube is confirmation you can see. So is a ring of caked dust around a barb, which is what weeks of slow seepage and evaporation leaves behind.
Then look at drivability. A hardened, cracked hose can lose enough pressure to lean the mixture out, producing a bog when the throttle snaps open, a stumble under load on a climb, or a stall that feels precisely like running the tank dry. Finally, handle the hose. Soft and springy is healthy; chalky, glassy, rigid, or visibly cracked means the hose is done regardless of whether it has leaked yet. Do not clear it just because the floor is clean, since fuel escaping under pressure can atomize and evaporate before it ever forms a drop.
Injection, Not a Carburetor
This Rincon uses electronic fuel injection. An electric pump inside the tank sends fuel to the throttle body under pressure, so there is no manual fuel valve to close and no carburetor float bowl to drain. Pressure has to be relieved deliberately before you separate a fitting, and some joints on this platform use a self locking quick connect coupler rather than a clamp. The fuel filter is integrated with the in tank pump assembly instead of sitting inline where you could change it on the visible hose.
Drive layout affects access more than procedure. With 4x4 running gear and independent rear suspension, the frame carries a front differential and driveshaft plus suspension linkage, and the hose is clipped along a path chosen to keep it away from that hardware and from exhaust heat. Put the new hose back along the same course.
The Reasons Fuel Hose Deteriorates
Rubber fuel line has a finite life measured in years. The plasticizers that keep it flexible slowly leave the compound, and the hose hardens until flexing cracks it. Repeated heating and cooling from the engine, direct sun, and ozone all speed the process. Riders in arid regions see it first, because low humidity draws residual moisture out of the hose wall and leaves the surface glazed and fragile.
Ethanol blended pump gas contributes independently. The alcohol content pulls moisture in from the air, and fuel that sits through a long layup begins breaking down the inner liner while gum and varnish collect at both barbs. That combination explains hoses that look serviceable yet are shedding fine particles toward an injector with a very small orifice. On a machine of this vintage, replace on age rather than waiting for a visible failure.
Supplies and Moving Air Through the Shop
- Fuel injection rated hose in the original inside diameter, cut long for trimming
- New clamps sized to the fittings, plus a quick connect release tool if a locking coupler is used
- Line clamping pliers, since no petcock exists on this model to stop flow
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, eye protection, and a stack of rags
- A drain pan and a sealable metal or fuel rated container
- Small sockets, a flat blade screwdriver, and a sharp utility blade
The gasoline safety point here is concrete. Vapor is heavier than air, so it flows downward and gathers along the floor, out of your sense of smell and directly where a spark can reach it. Open the door fully and run a fan at ground level moving air out of the space. Shut off appliances with standing pilots, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and cap your fuel container every time you set it down.
Freeing the Aged Hose from Both Ends
Depressurize before anything else. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the starter briefly until the engine stalls or will not catch, switch the key off, then disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the plastic panels around the tank, slide the drain pan into position, and drape a rag over the first fitting you plan to open, since a relieved hose still holds fuel.
Slide clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the joint. For a quick connect, press the locking tabs evenly and pull straight off without any side load, because plastic collars grow brittle over the years and crack. Twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond and draw it off steadily. If it has bonded to the barb, cut it lengthwise and peel it away rather than levering against the throttle body or pump module. Photograph the clip locations and the clearance around the front driveline before the old hose leaves the frame.
Installing the Replacement and Proving the Seal
Trim the new hose to the length of the original and push both ends fully onto their barbs dry. Hot water is the only assist a stiff end should get; grease, oil, and silicone stay off fuel fittings completely, since lubricant on a sealing surface creates a leak path and lets the hose migrate off under pressure and vibration. Set new clamps immediately behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, snug without cutting into the wall. On a self locking quick connect, push until it clicks and pull firmly to verify engagement; no clamp belongs on that fitting.
Reseat the hose in its clips, refit the pump fuse, and Reconnect the battery. Cycle the key on and off several times without starting the engine so the pump pressurizes the circuit while you inspect clean, dry joints. Wipe them with a rag and look again, then start the engine and check a third time at idle with the machine vibrating. A short slow lap and one final inspection give you real confidence before the panels go back on. If the delivery complaint that started this survives a leak free install, the in tank filter and pump assembly is the next thing to address.
