The 2014 Rancher 420 arrived as a thoroughly reworked machine, and the change that matters most for this job is under the tank. This model runs programmed fuel injection rather than a carburetor, which means there is no petcock to shut off, an electric pump sitting inside the tank, and a fuel line that holds real pressure even after the engine has been off for hours. Knowing that before you loosen a fitting is the difference between a tidy repair and a face full of gasoline.
Relieving Pressure Comes First
On an injected Rancher, you cannot simply close a valve and walk away. Locate the fuel pump fuse or relay in the fuse block, pull it, then crank the engine for a few seconds so it starts and stalls. That burns off most of the stored pressure in the line. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable so the pump cannot be commanded on while your hands are in there.
Even after that, expect residual fuel in the hose. Lay a rag over each fitting as you open it and keep a pan underneath. Line-clamping pliers are worth having on the bench too, since without a petcock there is no other way to pinch off flow if you need to stop and think mid-job.
How These Lines Deteriorate
Fuel hose ages from two directions. The plasticizers that keep the wall flexible gradually escape, leaving rubber that has gone stiff and glassy. Heat cycling off the engine and constant chassis vibration then convert that stiffness into hairline cracks, and the process runs faster in dry, low-humidity country where arid air pulls residual moisture out of the hose.
From the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas is the aggressor. Alcohol attracts water and slowly degrades the inner liner, particularly on a machine that sits for months with fuel standing in the system. The hose softens internally and starts shedding material toward the injector while the exterior keeps hardening. Under pressure, that combination is less forgiving than on a gravity-fed carbureted quad, because a weak spot does not seep gently — it lets go.
Symptoms to Take Seriously
- Fuel pooling on the skid plate or floor beneath the machine after it has been parked
- A gasoline smell strongest right after shutdown, while the system still holds pressure
- Visible cracking, a chalky surface, or a section that feels hard rather than pliable
- A dust-caked ring at a fitting, which is dried fuel residue collecting grime
- Bogging under load, stumbling on hard acceleration, or a lean stumble at higher rpm
Injected systems can hide a leak. Fuel escaping a pressurized joint often atomizes and evaporates before it drips, so trust your nose as much as your eyes. If the machine smells like gas after a ride and you cannot find a puddle, keep looking.
Tools and a Genuine Safety Note
- Fuel line rated for injection pressure, matched to the original inside diameter — not general-purpose carburetor hose
- Clamps appropriate to the fitting style you find, and a pick or small screwdriver for a retainer-clip quick-connect
- Line-clamping pliers, nitrile gloves, and plenty of rags
- Catch pan and an approved sealed container
- Sockets for the seat, racks, and side plastics, plus a hose cutter
Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level right where you are working. Open the door fully or roll the quad outside, get heaters and pilot lights out of the space, and let the engine cool before you start. Fuel under pressure spraying onto a hot exhaust is the one scenario worth going out of your way to avoid.
Removing and Replacing the Line
With pressure relieved and the battery disconnected, take off the seat and the plastics covering the tank so you can see the pump flange and follow the hose to the throttle body. If your Rancher uses a quick-connect coupler at the pump, press the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off without prying sideways, since an aged plastic collar cracks if you lever it. Where a clamp is used, slide it back along the hose first, then twist the hose to break the varnish bond at the barb. A stubborn end can be slit lengthwise and peeled rather than risking damage to the fitting.
Note the routing before it is gone. As a 4x4, this Rancher threads its line past front differential and driveshaft hardware and through frame guides a two-wheel-drive machine would not need. Photograph every clip.
Cut the new hose to the original length exactly. Push each end fully over its barb, dry, until it seats past the bead. Hot water on the hose end helps it slide, but grease, oil, and silicone must stay off the fittings entirely — lubricant on a sealing surface under pressure is an invitation to leak. Set new clamps just behind the bead and snug them evenly. If your connection is a self-locking quick-connect, push until it clicks and then tug firmly to confirm it has latched; that style needs no clamp at all.
Verifying the Repair and One Filter Note
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you inspect dry joints for seepage before the engine ever fires. Wipe both connections with a clean rag and look again. Start the engine, let it idle, and check a third time with everything vibrating and fully pressurized.
Keep one thing in mind about this generation: the fuel filter is built into the pump assembly inside the tank rather than sitting inline where you can see it. A new hose will not cure a restricted filter, so if the bogging or lean running persists after a clean install, the in-tank unit is your next stop. Once the fittings stay dry through a short test ride, reinstall the plastics and the 2014 Rancher is back in service.
