The 2014 Rancher 420 arrived with electronic fuel injection, and that single change rewrites the fuel line procedure compared with the carbureted Ranchers that came before it. There is no petcock under the tank on your machine. The line you are replacing belongs to a pressurized circuit fed by a pump that lives inside the tank, and it will hold pressure after the engine is shut off. Knowing that before you loosen anything is the difference between a tidy repair and a face full of gasoline.
What Fuel Injection Changes About This Job
On a carbureted quad you close a valve, open a float bowl drain, and the system is effectively dead. Your 2014 has none of those conveniences. Instead, the pump module inside the tank contains the fuel filter and the pressure regulator, and a short hose carries pressurized fuel up to the throttle body. Because the filter is inside the tank rather than sitting inline on the visible hose, a new line will not cure a delivery problem caused by a clogged filter.
The connections are different too. Where a carbureted Rancher uses a plain barb and a spring clamp at each end, injected models frequently use a self-locking quick-connect coupler at the tank, secured by internal tabs rather than a clamp. If yours has one, it needs no clamp added and should never get one. Any low-pressure hose you encounter, such as a vent line, can be pinched with line-clamping pliers, which is the closest thing to a petcock this machine offers.
Why the Hose Wears Out
Fuel hose is built around plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible, and heat cycling off the 420 single drives them out slowly and permanently. The compound hardens, loses its grip on the fitting, and eventually cracks. Riders in dry, arid country see the process run faster because low ambient humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and stiffens the jacket from the outside.
Ethanol-blended pump gas comes at the liner from the inside, absorbing water and gradually degrading the inner wall while depositing gum, especially during periods when the machine sits unused with fuel in the system. On an injected Rancher there is a second consideration: the hose is under constant pump pressure whenever the key is on, so a section that has hardened is being asked to seal against something a carbureted line never faces.
Recognizing a Line That Is Ready to Fail
- A gasoline smell around the machine, often strongest right after shutdown while the circuit still holds pressure
- Damp residue or a small puddle on the skid plate or floor beneath the tank area
- Fine cracking, a chalky gray surface, or a hardened section you can feel by pinching the hose
- A ring of dirt caked at a fitting where fuel has seeped and dried
- Bogging under load, a stumble on hard acceleration, or an engine that runs lean and hunts at steady throttle
Injected machines hide small leaks better than carbureted ones. Pressurized fuel escaping from a pinhole often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so you may smell a leak long before you ever see one. Trust your nose here as much as your eyes.
Tools, Parts, and a Genuinely Safe Setup
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection, since pressurized fuel can spray
- Replacement hose rated for fuel-injection pressure, matched to the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor hose
- Line-clamping pliers for pinching off any low-pressure section
- Fresh clamps appropriate to whatever fitting style you find, plus a quick-connect release tool if your machine uses a locking coupler
- An approved container for captured fuel, a funnel, and plenty of rags
- Sockets and drivers for the seat and the plastic panels over the tank
Ventilate for real. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, which is where you will be lying, so open the overhead door completely or roll the quad outdoors instead of cracking a window overhead. Keep grinders, heaters, and open flame entirely out of the space, and cap the fuel container when you are not pouring into it.
Relieving Pressure and Removing the Old Line
This is the step that separates a clean job from a mess. Shut the engine off, then disable the fuel pump circuit by pulling its fuse or unplugging the pump connector. Crank the engine briefly so it consumes the pressure still in the line and stalls, turn the key off, and only then disconnect the battery negative terminal. Remove the seat and the plastics over the tank so you can see the pump outlet and the run of hose heading to the throttle body.
Slide a drain pan underneath and drape a rag over the first fitting you open, because even a depressurized line holds residual fuel. For a clamped end, move the clamp well back before disturbing the joint, then twist the hose on the barb to break the varnish bond rather than pulling straight against it. For a quick-connect, depress the locking tabs squarely and pull straight off without levering sideways, since those plastic collars grow brittle with age and crack easily. A hardened end that will not release can be slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled away.
Note the routing as it comes out. This is a 4x4 with electric shift, so the hose threads past the front driveline, extra frame crossmembers, and the shift motor wiring that a two wheel drive quad does not carry. Photograph every clip and clearance point before the old hose is completely free.
Installing the Replacement and Verifying It Holds
Cut the new hose to match the original length exactly; extra length chafes on the frame or fouls the steering, and a short piece pulls at the fittings whenever the chassis flexes. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms against the shoulder, and install it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no business on a fuel fitting, and on a pressurized circuit a lubricated sealing surface is an outright invitation to a leak. Hot water for a few seconds is all the help a stiff end should get.
Position new clamps just behind the bead on each barb and tighten them evenly. If a quick-connect is involved, push until the collar clicks and then tug firmly to confirm it has latched. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and the front driveshaft. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without starting; each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line, letting you inspect both joints while everything is still dry. Wipe them with a clean rag and read the rag. Start the engine, let it idle and warm, and check again before the plastics go back on.
